Environmental drivers of global variation in home range size of terrestrial and marine mammals.

As animal home range size (HRS) provides valuable information for species conservation, it is important to understand the driving factors of HRS variation. It is widely known that differences in species traits (e.g. body mass) are major contributors to variation in mammal HRS. However, most studies examining how environmental variation explains mammal HRS variation have been limited to a few species, or only included a single (mean) HRS estimate for the majority of species, neglecting intraspecific HRS variation. Additionally, most studies examining environmental drivers of HRS variation inclu

Vocally disruptive behaviour in nursing home residents in Ireland: a descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Vocally disruptive behaviour (VDB) is relatively common in nursing home residents but difficult to treat. There is limited study on prevalence and treatment of VDB. We hypothesise that VDB is a result of complex interaction between patient factors and environmental contributors. METHODS: Residents of nursing homes in south Dublin were the target population for this study. Inclusion criteria were that the residents were 65 years or over and exhibited VDB significant enough for consideration in the resident's care plan. Information on typology and frequency of VDB, Interventions emp

The CC chemokine thymus-derived chemotactic agent 4 (TCA-4, secondary lymphoid tissue chemokine, 6Ckine, exodus-2) triggers lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1-mediated arrest of rolling T lymphocytes in peripheral lymph node high endothelial venules.

T cell homing to peripheral lymph nodes (PLNs) is defined by a multistep sequence of interactions between lymphocytes and endothelial cells in high endothelial venules (HEVs). After initial tethering and rolling via L-selectin, firm adhesion of T cells requires rapid upregulation of lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1) adhesiveness by a previously unknown pathway that activates a Galpha(i)-linked receptor. Here, we used intravital microscopy of murine PLNs to study the role of thymus-derived chemotactic agent (TCA)-4 (secondary lymphoid tissue chemokine, 6Ckine, Exodus-2) in homing

Local growth of a Burkitt's lymphoma versus disseminated invasive growth of the autologous EBV-immortalized lymphoblastoid cells and their somatic cell hybrids in SCID mice.

Specific host-graft interactions, as well as intrinsic properties of transferred cell, determine tumorigenicity in xenogeneic systems. We compared the growth characteristics of human B-lymphoid cell lines in SCID mice with the well characterized growth pattern in nude mice and observed striking differences in malignancy in the respective hosts. Two cell lines derived from the same individual, the Epstein-Barr-virus(EBV)-positive Burkitt's lymphoma BL 60 (BL) and the autologous EBV-immortalized lymphoblastoid cell line IARC 277 (LCL) were used. In addition, we tested somatic cell hybrids (HYB)

A Quasi-Experimental Study on Feeding Behaviors and Related Outcomes by Provision of Molded Puree in Aged-Care Facilities.

INTRODUCTION: Texture-modified diets are commonly used in the management of dysphagia in older adults. Conventional pureed diets, although safe, are often visually unappealing, potentially leading to reduced intake and negative feeding behaviors. Molded purees are created using food molds and gelling agents and aim to improve mealtime experiences through enhanced presentation. This study evaluated the effects of molded puree on feeding behaviors and intake amount in residents of aged-care facilities and whether any factors were associated with more favorable outcomes. METHODS: A quasi-experim

Ontogenetic shifts in the nesting behaviour of female crocodiles.

Body size and age are crucial factors influencing reproductive capacity and success. As females grow, their reproductive investment and success often increase due to improved overall physiological condition and experience gained through successive reproductive events. While much of this work has been conducted on birds and mammals, surprisingly little is known on how body size affects nesting decisions in other long-lived vertebrates. We monitored the movements and nesting behaviour of 57 wild female estuarine crocodiles Crocodylus porosus over a 10-year period (and across consecutive nesting

Nest-site selection, nesting behaviour and spatial ecology of female Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) in South Africa.

Nesting biology and ecology have been investigated for Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus), but information on behaviour and movement patterns of nesting females during nest guarding is scant. Consequently, we investigated the home ranges, nest-site selection strategies, movement patterns, activity levels and nest fidelity of four nesting females using telemetry. Gravid females selected winter basking/breeding areas close (351±2m) to nest-sites. Mean home range and core-use areas of nesting females were 8539±4752m2, and 4949±3302m2 respectively. Mean home range (0.85ha) was significantly sm

Perinatal exposure to glyphosate-based herbicides induced neurodevelopmental behaviors impairments and increased oxidative stress in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus in offspring.

Glyphosate is the organophosphate pesticide most widely used in the world. Recent studies correlate exposure to glyphosate and the emergence of neurodevelopmental disorders. Therefore, it was objective to propose a rat model of perinatal exposure to glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) to study associated neurodevelopmental disorders. Behavioral aspects and brain pathways were assessed in the prepubertal phase. For this, maternal treatment occurred throughout the entire gestation period (from GD0) until weaning on postnatal day 22 (PND 22). Control group received oral gavage with 5 mL/kg of salin

Restricted antennal movement impacts the tandem running dynamics in a ponerine ant.

BACKGROUND: Tandem running is a recruitment method found in some species of ants where one ant follows another ant to reach a destination having maintained a physical contact with its antennae, throughout the journey. It is considered that the exchange of information regarding the destination among the nestmates happened during the process of tandem running. We examined the impact of restricting antennal movement on tandem running by using Diacamma indicum, a tandem-running ponerine ant by following 480 tandem runs across 9 treatment colonies and comparing it with 10 control relocating colonie

[Home monitoring of infants suffering from infantile anorexia].

The construction of parenthood comes under pressure when an infant suffers from anorexia nervosa. Support at home for the family can be provided by the child health nurse using Esther Bick's infant observation method. Over the course of the visits, the intrafamily relationships are appeased to create an atmosphere which is favourable to the harmonious development of the child.

The possible function of positive reinforcement in home-bound agoraphobia: a case study.

We conducted an uncontrolled case study (ABA design) based upon the hypothesis that the behavior of a home-bound agoraphobic is at least partially maintained by positive reinforcement in the home and that a disruption of access to home-based reinforcement would lead to an increased frequency of out-of-the-home behavior. Data concerning the types and amounts of behavior engaged in by the subject within the confines of her home and yard were gathered during a 30-day base line period. In addition, potential reinforcers in the home were identified by a survey schedule and by self-report of time al

Expression and function of adhesion receptors on normal B cells and B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

A large number of molecules have been identified and characterized which mediate (1) homing of lymphoid cells to lymphoid tissues; (2) localization of cells within distinct microenvironments; and (3) cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions within those microenvironments. B lymphocytes express these adhesion receptors during stages of normal ontogeny. Malignant B cells can also express these adhesion molecules, and they probably serve a "normal" function in a neoplastic state. However, the aberrant expression and/or function of adhesion receptors may in part explain the clinical and biological b

Characterization Of Blood-Brain Barrier Crossing And Tumor Homing Peptides By Molecular Dynamics Simulations.

INTRODUCTION: The new frontier of tumor diagnosis and treatment relies on the development of delivery strategies capable of allowing the specific targeting of the diagnostic agents/chemotherapeutics, avoiding side effects. In the case of brain tumors, achieving this goal is made more difficult by the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Peptides have been revealed as excellent candidates for both BBB crossing and specific cancer homing. Nanoparticles (NPs), functionalized with BBB crossing and tumor homing (TH) peptides, are emerging as smart theranostic systems. However, there is still

Environment modifies the expression of behavioral sensitization produced by methamphetamine: behavioral and neurochemical studies.

Effects of environmental modulation of methamphetamine (MA)-induced behavior on the establishment and mode of expression of behavioral sensitization were examined. Rats received daily injection of MA for 10 days (1mg/kg, s.c.). Half of them were immediately returned to the home cage (home cage group) and the other half were individually confined in a cylinder with a diameter of 13cm placed inside the home cage for 3h after each injection (small cage group). Gross observations revealed that rats which received MA in the small cage did not locomote but showed sniffing and rearing. The third grou

Examining restricted and repetitive behaviors in young children with autism spectrum disorder during two observational contexts.

This prospective study of the FIRST WORDS® Project examined restricted and repetitive behaviors in a sample of 55 toddlers at a mean age of 20 months who were later diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Restricted and repetitive behaviors were coded using the Repetitive Movement and Restricted Interest Scales in two video-recorded observation methods-structured sampling procedures in a clinic and naturalistic everyday activities at home. Measures of restricted and repetitive behaviors were higher in the clinic setting than in the home observation, especially for behaviors involving object u

Distribution of rats infected with Rickettsia tsutsugamushi (scrub typhus) in an edge habitat.

No focalization of rats (Rattus tiomanicus and R. argentiventer) infected with Rickettsia tsutsugamushi could be discerned over a 500 m trapping transect at the border between a forest and lalang grass (Imperata cylindrica). R. tiomanicus appeared to occupy 250 m of the transect on the average and had periods during which infections were observed which averaged 97 days. Calulations indicated that more than 50% of individuals become infected over their life-time. The high rate of infection in this and other areas described in earlier publications and the habits of the rats suggest that infected

Wavelet-based visual compass.

For many ant species, successful visual navigation is crucial for the survival of the individual and the colony, meaning these small-brained insects have evolved to be exceptional navigators. This makes them an ideal inspiration for biomimetic robotics research. Visual compass-style snapshot models have been used to model visual navigation in ants and have been applied to visual teach-and-repeat style robot navigation. In these models, images or 'snapshots' stored when the ant first travels a route are compared to views experienced when recapitulating the route to derive a bearing that will di

Asymmetry of different brain structures in homing pigeons with and without navigational experience.

Homing pigeons (Columba livia f.d.) are well-known for their homing abilities, and their brains seem to be functionally adapted to homing as exemplified, e.g. by their larger hippocampi and olfactory bulbs. Their hippocampus size is influenced by navigational experience, and, as in other birds, functional specialisation of the left and right hemispheres ('lateralisation') occurs in homing pigeons. To show in what way lateralisation is reflected in brain structure volume, and whether some lateralisation or asymmetry in homing pigeons is caused by experience, we compared brains of homing pigeons

Limits to the host range of the highly polyphagous tephritid fruit fly Anastrepha ludens in its natural habitat.

Anastepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a highly polyphagous fruit fly that is able to develop in a wide range of hosts. Understanding the limits of this pest's host range could provide valuable information for pest management and plant breeding for pest resistance. Previous studies have shown that guavas (Psidium guajava (Myrtaceae) L.), are not attacked under natural conditions by A. ludens. To understand this phenomenon, guavas were exposed to natural infestation by A. ludens and to other fruit fly species that infest guavas in nature (Anastrepha striata Schiner, Anastepha fraterculus (W
