New respiratory viruses and the elderly.

The diagnostics of respiratory viral infections has improved markedly during the last 15 years with the development of PCR techniques. Since 1997, several new respiratory viruses and their subgroups have been discovered: influenza A viruses H5N1 and H1N1, human metapneumovirus, coronaviruses SARS, NL63 and HKU1, human bocavirus, human rhinoviruses C and D and potential respiratory pathogens, the KI and WU polyomaviruses and the torque teno virus. The detection of previously known viruses has also improved. Currently, a viral cause of respiratory illness is almost exclusively identifiable in ch

Neurological Impact of Respiratory Viruses: Insights into Glial Cell Responses in the Central Nervous System.

Respiratory viral infections pose a significant public health threat, particularly in children and older adults, with high mortality rates. Some of these pathogens are the human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV), severe acute respiratory coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), influenza viruses (IV), human parvovirus B19 (B19V), and human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1). These viruses cause various respiratory symptoms, including cough, fever, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. Notably, these viruses can also impact the central nervous system (CNS), leading to acute manifestations such as seizures, encephalopathies, ence

The treatment of bronchiolitis.

Bronchiolitis is the commonest reason for hospital admission in infancy and the most frequent cause of acute respiratory failure in children admitted to paediatric intensive care units in the UK and North America. The respiratory syncytial virus accounts for most cases of bronchiolitis, however, new virus isolation techniques have led to the discovery of previously unrecognised viruses, including the human metapneumovirus and bocavirus which also play a significant role. The main developments in bronchiolitis management in recent years relate to the use of immunoprophylaxis; a number of other

Review of new and newly discovered respiratory tract viruses in children.

Respiratory tract viral infection continues to be among the most common reasons for emergency department visits and hospitalization of children, particularly infants younger than 1 year, in the United States. Throughout the years, clinicians have considered respiratory syncytial virus followed by influenza as the most common pathogens responsible. Over the past decade, new viruses have been discovered through both more specific testing and the finding of new agents causing infection. This includes human metapneumovirus, which leads to similar but often epidemiologically more severe clinical sy

Beyond RSV: why the bronchiolitis burden in infants will not simply disappear.

Nirsevimab and maternal respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination are delivering real-world important reductions in RSV-bronchiolitis hospitalisations, a landmark achievement in paediatric preventive medicine. We argue, however, that these successes should not be mistaken for the resolution of severe bronchiolitis as a clinical and public health problem. First, RSV's epidemiological dominance may partly reflect its transmission efficiency rather than a unique pathogenic superiority: rhinovirus, human metapneumovirus, adenovirus, and bocavirus already cause substantial disease, and genetic

Emerging viruses in transplantation: there is more to infection after transplant than CMV and EBV.

Transplant physicians and surgeons are familiar with the risks, clinical behavior, and management of cytomegalovirus in transplant recipients. Donor-transmitted viral infections are uncommon but in recent years have brought to light the clinical manifestations of rabies, West Nile virus, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus in the early posttransplant period. Later posttransplant, infection with viruses circulating in the community can occur with a number of pathogens, including some vaccine-preventable illnesses such as measles and mumps. Recent advances in molecular microbiology have made

Pneumomediastinum, pneumorrhachis and subcutaneous emphysema associated with viral infections: Report of three cases.

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum is usually secondary to alveolar rupture in the pulmonary interstitium, associated with subcutaneous emphysema and occasionally with pneumothorax, but is rarely associated with pneumorrhachis. The leaked air into the pulmonary perivascular interstitium follows the path of least resistance from the mediastinum to the fascial planes of the neck. Air freely communicates via the neural foramina and collects in the epidural space. Pneumorrhachis is defined as the presence of air in the spinal canal, either in the intradural and/or extradural spaces. It is a very rare c

[A review of detection methods for human bocaviruses].

Human bocavirus (HBoV) 1-4 have been detected both in respiratory and stool samples since the first HBoV was discovered in 2005. HBoV-1 is mostly associated with respiratory infection, while HBoV 2-4 are usually associated with intestinal tract infection. A variety of signs and symptoms have been described in patients with HBoV infection, including cough, wheezing, pneumonia, and diarrhea, but the research on pathogenic mechanism of HBoV is limited because HBoV cannot be cultured in vitro due to the lack of appropriate host cells. Three-dimensional epithelial cell culture, reverse genetics, an

Management of bacterial infections in children with asthma.

Respiratory viruses are the single most common causes of asthma exacerbations in children. Rhinovirus-induced wheezing is a risk factor for chronic asthma, but its mechanism has remained unknown. Human bocavirus is a common finding in wheezing children, but its role as a respiratory pathogen is still unclear. Mycoplasma pneumoniae may, like viruses, induce wheezing and asthma exacerbation. Chlamydia pneumoniae and, in recent studies, Chlamydia trachomatis, may not only induce asthma exacerbations but may also be involved in the pathogenesis of chronic asthma. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophi

[Changes in Patterns of Respiratory Virus since the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic (Until April 2023)].

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly impacted the trend of influenza and respiratory virus infections, leading to substantial changes in their seasonal patterns. This study aimed to describe the impact of COVID-19 on the pattern of respiratory virus infections by analyzing the trend (such as detection rate) of respiratory pathogens in patients with respiratory symptoms who visited sentinel sites and by examining the surveillance results of inpatient surveillance at general hospitals. The analysis covers a 3-year period before the COVID-19 outbreak (2017–2019) and

Diagnosis of Respiratory Infections Using Syndromic Panels: A Ct-Based Approach Beyond Qualitative Detection.

This retrospective study, conducted between September 2023 and October 2025, evaluated age-related pathogen prevalence, seasonal dynamics, and Cycle threshold (Ct) values in nasopharyngeal specimens from hospitalized subjects with suspected acute respiratory infections (ARIs) using the multiplex syndromic panel. A median-based Delta Ct was calculated to define pathogen dominance in co-detections. A total of 2479 nasopharyngeal swabs were analyzed and 54.4% tested positive for at least one pathogen. Overall, the positivity rate and co-detections were found to be significantly higher in pediatri

New respiratory viral infections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The first era in the discoveries of respiratory viruses occured between 1933 and 1965 when influenza virus, enteroviruses, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza virus and coronavirus (CoV) were found by virus culture. In the 1990s, the development of high throughput viral detection and diagnostics instruments increased diagnostic sensitivity and enabled the search for new viruses. This article briefly reviews the clinical significance of newly discovered respiratory viruses. RECENT FINDINGS: In 2001, the second era in the discoveries of respirat

Changes in Seasonal Patterns of Pediatric Respiratory Viral Infections Before, During, and After the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Seventeen-Year Surveillance Study in the Republic of Korea.

The coronavirus disease 19 pandemic disrupted pediatric respiratory infections through non-pharmaceutical interventions and altered contact patterns. Long-term comparisons across the pandemic timeline in children remain limited. In this study, we analyzed 15,657 respiratory specimens from patients ≤ 18 years at Dankook University Hospital (2007-2023) using multiplex polymerase chain reaction assays targeting 15 viruses. Age-stratified positivity rates were compared across pandemic phases. Children ≤ 6 years comprised 88.61% of the study population. Human rhinovirus showed the highest detection

Identification of viral etiology of acute respiratory tract infections in children and adults in Tabanan, Bali, Indonesia.

Acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) is the most common infectious disease in humans worldwide. The morbidity and mortality rates are high, especially in developing countries from Southeast Asia and Africa. While ARTI is commonly associated with viruses, there is limited data on the spectrum of viruses causing ARTI in developing countries, including Indonesia. This study was based on utilizing molecular techniques targeting a panel of 11 endemic and emerging respiratory viral pathogens including zoonotic viruses in a cohort of children and adults presenting at Tabanan General Hospital, Bal
