INTRODUCTION: Humeral shaft fractures constitute 1-1.5% of all fractures, with most occurring in the middle and distal segments. While conservative treatment is common, surgical fixation is often preferred for displaced or comminuted fractures, particularly in young, active individuals. Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) techniques have been developed to minimize soft-tissue damage and reduce the risks of complications such as non-union and radial nerve palsy. Although anterior approaches are well-studied, the posterior approach remains less explored. This case report highlights th

INTRODUCTION: Multifocal humeral fractures are extremely rare. These may affect the neck and the shaft, the shaft alone, or the diaphysis and the distal humerus. There is no classification of these fractures in the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2004 to 2010, 717 patients with humeral fracture were treated surgically at our department. Thirty-five patients presented with an associated fracture of the proximal and diaphyseal humerus: synthesis was performed with plate and screws in 34 patients, and the remaining patient had an open fracture that was treated with an external fixator.

Distal humeral epiphyseal separations are rare and treatment strategies are not well defined. The case of a full-term male newborn with a distal humeral epiphyseal separation as the result of a birth trauma was reviewed. A literature review of this topic was undertaken to better understand its occurrence, diagnosis, and treatment options. The patient sustained a distal humeral epiphyseal separation during a vaginal delivery. Deformity and decreased movement in the elbow were observed. Radiographs and subsequent ultrasound were used to make the diagnosis of distal humeral epiphyseal separation.

Supracondylar humerus fractures are one of the most common fractures in the pediatric age group. Displaced fractures are treated by closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner-wire (K-wire) fixation in a standard situation. Cross K-wire and lateral K-wires are the commonest configurations used for closed fixation. The present study aims to evaluate the difference between the two configurations in terms of surgical technique, functional outcome, radiological outcome and complications. To assess the radiographic and functional results of lateral and crossed pinning in children with a diagnosed c

The goal of this article was to review studies on distal humerus fracture plates (DHFPs) to understand the biomechanical influence of systematically changing the plate or screw variables. The problem is that DHFPs are commonly used surgically, although complications can still occur, and it is unclear if implant configurations are always optimized using biomechanical criteria. A systematic search of the PubMed database was conducted to identify English-language biomechanical optimization studies of DHFPs that parametrically altered plate and/or screw variables to analyze their influence on engi

PURPOSE: To identify the incidence and the factors associated with a postoperative ulnar nerve neuropathy in patients who had undergone open reduction and internal fixation for intraarticular distal humerus fractures.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 116 patients who had undergone surgery between January 2011 and December 2020. Age, sex, BMI, mechanism of injury, open or closed fracture, operation time, tourniquet time, and nerve injury at the final examination were collected from medical charts. We essentially used the paratricipital approach. In cases in which the reduction of intraarti

A coronal plane fracture of the distal humerus in a child is an uncommon fracture, with the most familiar example being a capitellar fracture. An unusual coronal fracture of the entire distal humeral articular surface (capitellum and trochlea) occurred in a three-year-old boy. This fracture pattern has been described in adults but is believed to be previously unreported in children. This Salter-Harris Type IV fracture was initially misdiagnosed as a lateral humeral condyle fracture. Three years after treatment with open reduction and pin fixation, the distal humerus shows no evidence of growth

Proximal humeral fractures are becoming increasingly common in individuals older than 60 years, with only fractures of the hip and distal radius occurring with a higher frequency. Most proximal humeral fractures can be managed without surgery; however, if a fracture is displaced or angulated, surgical treatment may be required. There are four main options for the surgical management of proximal humeral fractures: minimally invasive percutaneous reduction and fixation, open reduction and periarticular plating, hemiarthroplasty, and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.

Arm wrestling places significant torque on the humeral shaft. A spiral distal humeral shaft fracture is an unusual but significant injury that can result. Of 93 patients who presented between 2009 and 2017 with closed humeral shaft fractures that were managed nonoperatively, 9 sustained the fractures while arm wrestling. Outcomes were compared with those of all other patients with nonoperatively managed humeral shaft fractures sustained through other mechanisms. The Student's t test was used to compare cohorts. All patients had spiral fractures that occurred in the distal one-third of the hume

Transphyseal fractures of the distal humerus are usually seen in children younger than 3 years of age and are considered as Salter-Harris Type I epiphysiolysis. Neonatal transphyseal distal humerus injuries are extremely rare. It usually occurs due to trauma during difficult labour but can also be seen after child abuse. Since the distal humerus is composed of cartilaginous tissue in newborns, it is difficult to make a diagnosis with direct radiography. Patients are often diagnosed with elbow dislocation. However, elbow dislocation is almost never seen under the age of 3 years. Transphyseal fr

The extra-articular distal humerus plate (EADHP) has been widely used for surgical treatment of distal humerus shaft fracture (DHSF). However, the surgical approach, fixation methods, and implant positions of the EADHP remain controversial owing to iatrogenic radial nerve injury and complaints such as skin irritation related to the plate. Anterior plating with a modified (upside-down application) proximal humerus locking plate (PHILOS) has been proposed as an alternative, However, research on its biomechanical performance remain insufficient and were mostly based on retrospective studies. BACKGROUND: The purpose of the current work was to study the arterial blood supply of the humerus to evaluate impairments of the blood supply after humeral fractures and different methods of fracture treatment.
METHODS: Arterial blood supply of the humerus was studied by corrosion injection technique in 6 cadaver preparations and is compared with the existing literature.
RESULTS: Humeral head arteries originate from the circumflex humeral arteries. The major vessel enters the greater tubercle. Another group of vessels accesses the head from medially. The nutrient artery for the shaft enters

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humeral fractures in children are common, with associated bony injuries typically being fractures of the forearm or distal radius. To our knowledge, a combined supracondylar humeral fracture associated with a Hahn-Steinthal capitellar fracture has not been reported earlier. Similarly, posterior arm compartment syndrome is extremely rare, with most instances having occurred after chronic compression and bleeding into the compartments from anticoagulation, direct trauma including crush, or tendon ruptures. Only 2 cases have been reported after a fracture of the humerus.

INTRODUCTION: The retrospective study was made to evaluate the fracture patterns at the proximal humeral shaft for which the long version of a standard proximal humeral nail (PHNLV) has been used. The indication has been decided by the individual surgeons.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Over a five year period 72 consecutive PHNLV cases of an acute fracture were identified and were included in the study. Mean patient age was 68.9 years. Gender ratio was m/f=22/50. 86.1% of the patients fractured their humerus by a fall, the rest by a high velocity accident. We analysed patient comorbidity, ASA score,

BACKGROUND: Minimally displaced fractures of the lateral humeral condyle (LHC) may be treated nonoperatively in a long arm cast, but there is not a standardized evidence-based protocol. The aim of this study was to evaluate our nonoperatively treated LHC fractures, determine the risk of subsequent displacement, analyze our practice variability, and develop an evidence-based protocol to safely manage children with LHC fractures and to evaluate potential savings related to this analysis.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed clinical and radiographic parameters of all patients with LHC fractures

Distal humeral fractures are relatively rare and are known to have a high nonunion rate compared to other humeral fracture sites. Treatment options for nonunion include open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and total elbow arthroplasty (TEA). While TEA has been increasingly reported as a treatment for distal humeral nonunion in recent years, it has limitations, including weight-bearing restrictions. This case report describes an 82-year-old female with a distal humeral nonunion that had been untreated for three years. Despite her advanced age and the prolonged time since injury, successf
