Helminth infracommunity in a maned wolf, Chrysocyon brachyurus, from the humid Chaco, Argentina.

Parasitism is an important factor in conservation worldwide, especially for endangered species, as it can affect host populations by reducing growth rates, fecundity and affecting nutritional status. The maned wolf Chrysocyon brachyurus, a near-threatened species, is distributed across different habitats from the south Amazonian forest in Brazil to northern Argentina, Paraguay and eastern Bolivia. Most studies on gastrointestinal parasites in wild maned wolves are based on coprological findings, and there is little information about adult parasites and parasite species richness. Therefore, thi

The Efficacy of Ingesting Water on Thermoregulatory Responses and Running Performance in a Warm-Humid Condition.

The understanding that fluid ingestion attenuates thermoregulatory and circulatory stress during exercise in the heat was based on studies conducted in relatively dry (∼50% RH) environments. It remains undetermined whether similar effects occur during exercise in a warm and more humid environment, where evaporative capacity is reduced. Nine well-trained, unacclimatised male runners were randomly assigned to perform four experimental trials where they ran for 60 min at an intensity of 70% VO2max followed by an incremental exercise test until volitional exhaustion. The four trials consisted of n

Simultaneous Online Measurement of H2O and CO2 in the Humid CO2 Adsorption/Desorption Process.

A dew point meter (DP) and an infrared (IR) CO2 analyzer were assembled in a humid CO2 adsorption/desorption system in series for simultaneous online measurements of H2O and CO2, respectively. The humidifier, by using surface-flushing on a saturated brine solution was self-made for the generation of humid air flow. It was found that by this method it became relatively easy to obtain a low H2O content in air flow and that its fluctuation could be reduced compared to the bubbling method. Water calibration for the DP-IR detector is necessary to be conducted for minimizing the measurement error of

Influence of stearic acid coating of the NaCl surface on the reactivity with NO2 under humidity.

In the atmosphere, sea salt aerosols, containing mainly NaCl, can accumulate fatty acids and undergo heterogeneous chemistry with atmospheric nitrogen oxides. The effect of stearic acid (SA) coating on the reactivity of the NaCl(100) surface with NO2 under humidity was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman mapping and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) to highlight processes occurring on NaCl surfaces. The vapor-deposition of SA on the NaCl surface generates heterogeneous coating with discontinuous monolayer islands. The SA molecules with all-trans conformation

The role of humidity and other correction factors in the AAPM TG-21 dosimetry protocol.

A detailed derivation is presented of the formulas required to determine Ngas and Dmed in the AAPM TG-21 dosimetry protocol. This protocol specifies how to determine the absorbed dose in an electron or photon beam when using exposure or absorbed dose calibrated ion chambers. It is shown that the expression given in TG-21's recent letter of clarification is incorrect. Accounting for humidity correctly increases, by 0.4%, all absorbed dose determinations using an exposure calibrated ion chamber. Taking into account other correction factors in the equation for exposure could also have varying, bu

The effect of humidity on the enhanced CO2 adsorption of amine-functionalized microporous activated carbon.

Cost-effective and environmentally friendly sorbents were created for capturing CO2 by incorporating monoethanolamine (MEA) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) onto a microporous activated carbon (AC) material. The application of a KOH reagent enhanced the surface area and pore volume of the carbon material. The BET, SEM, EDX, and FTIR techniques were employed to analyze the structural and surface properties of the developed samples. Raw AC possessed the highest surface area and largest micropore volume equal to 786 m2/g and 0.33 cm3/g, respectively. The amine impregnation increased the nitrogen

Anti-competitive adsorption of gaseous benzene on hydrophilic microporous carbon in humid conditions.

The adsorption capture of ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is of practical importance for air quality management. Herein, unique anti-competitive adsorption behavior of benzene on a hydrophilic activated carbon (Procarb-900 (P900)) is evidenced in the presence of competing components (e.g., formaldehyde (FA) and/or moisture). Contrary to general expectations, the adsorption capacity of 10 Pa benzene (QB) onto P900 (30 mg) at the 99 % breakthrough level improves from 144.8 to 187 mg g-1 as the relative humidity (RH) increases from 0 to 25 %. Such pattern is maintained at 183.9 mg g-1 e

Kinetics of human insulin degradation in the solid-state: An investigation of the effects of temperature and humidity.

With the increasing development of oral peptide dosage forms, a comprehensive understanding of factors affecting peptide drug stability in the solid-state is critical. This study used human insulin, as a model peptide, to examine the individual and interactive effects of temperature and humidity on its solid-state stability. Insulin was stored at temperature (25 °C, 40 °C, and 6 °C) and humidity (1 %, 33 % and 75 %) over 6 months. Primary degradation pathways were deamidation and covalent aggregation. Degradation product formation rates were determined empirically and modelled using the humidi

The neglected role of relative humidity in the interannual variability of urban malaria in Indian cities.

The rapid pace of urbanization makes it imperative that we better understand the influence of climate forcing on urban malaria transmission. Despite extensive study of temperature effects in vector-borne infections in general, consideration of relative humidity remains limited. With process-based dynamical models informed by almost two decades of monthly surveillance data, we address the role of relative humidity in the interannual variability of epidemic malaria in two semi-arid cities of India. We show a strong and significant effect of humidity during the pre-transmission season on malaria

Investigating the effects of absolute humidity and movement on COVID-19 seasonality in the United States.

Mounting evidence suggests the primary mode of SARS-CoV-2 transmission is aerosolized transmission from close contact with infected individuals. While transmission is a direct result of human encounters, falling humidity may enhance aerosolized transmission risks similar to other respiratory viruses (e.g., influenza). Using Google COVID-19 Community Mobility Reports, we assessed the relative effects of absolute humidity and changes in individual movement patterns on daily cases while accounting for regional differences in climatological regimes. Our results indicate that increasing humidity wa

The efficiency and mechanism of humidity in alleviating CO2 inhibition on H2S adsorption to straw biochars.

Adsorption tests were conducted to clarify the impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) on hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal to straw biochars and the role of humidity in affecting the CO2 impact. When straw biochars were dry, CO2 proved significantly detrimental to their H2S adsorption, regardless of the CO2 contents. In contrast, when adjusting the humidity of the biochars to 20%, the presence of CO2 promoted the conversion of H2S into sulfites, though still inhibited the generation of elemental sulfur, through which the original negative CO2 impact was nearly compensated. The presence of low to medium c

Effect of Temperature and Humidity on the Allegro-inflammatory Factors and Allergic Rhinitis-related Behavior.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an allergic disease induced by the T helper 2 (TH2) lymphocyte immune response, where its mediators are the primary cause of clinical symptoms. Environmental factors are the primary determinants of the allergic response in genetically susceptible individuals. This study investigates the effects of climate conditions (warm, cold, humid, and dry) on allergic rhinitis. AR models were created in mice under 4 different conditions. We investigated AR-related behavior (sneezing and nose rubbing), as well as total immunoglobulin E (IgE), histamine, interleukin-4 (IL-4), leuko
