Discovery of a macromolecular complex mediating the hunger suppressive actions of cocaine: Structural and functional properties.

Cocaine not only increases brain dopamine levels but also activates the sigma1 receptor (σ1 R) that in turn regulates orexigenic receptor function. Identification of interactions involving dopamine D1 (D1 R), ghrelin (GHS-R1a ), and σ1 receptors have been addressed by biophysical techniques and a complementation approach using interfering peptides. The effect of cocaine on receptor functionality was assayed by measuring second messenger, cAMP and Ca2+ , levels. The effect of acute or chronic cocaine administration on receptor complex expression was assayed by in situ proximity ligation assay.

Effects of hunger, satiety and oral glucose on effective connectivity between hypothalamus and insular cortex.

The hypothalamus and insular cortex play an essential role in the integration of endocrine and homeostatic signals and their impact on food intake. Resting-state functional connectivity alterations of the hypothalamus, posterior insula (PINS) and anterior insula (AINS) are modulated by metabolic states and caloric intake. Nevertheless, a deeper understanding of how these factors affect the strength of connectivity between hypothalamus, PINS and AINS is missing. This study investigated whether effective (directed) connectivity within this network varies as a function of prandial states (hunger

Food refusal as a protest tool. Hunger strikes in Belgian prisons during the interwar period.

In studies on resistance and protest, empirical research tends to concentrate on collective forms of action, those organised within social movements or by resistance groups. As such, research into the protest tactic of hunger strikes suffers from the same ailment. While there is ample historical study into hunger strikes by the suffragettes or the IRA, the actions of individuals without any connection to political movements have mostly been left unnoticed - although they tended to outnumber the former, especially in prisons where hunger strikes are in a way a measure of last resort. Food vs money? Effects of hunger on mood and behavioral reactivity to reward in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies using neuroimaging and behavioral measures reported altered reward processing in anorexia nervosa (AN). In addition, anhedonia states are frequently reported in AN, potentially due to the physiological stress produced by the permanent starvation. We investigated the effect of fasting and satiety on mood and reaction times to monetary rewards in AN patients and healthy controls. METHODS: Twenty-four participants with acute AN (BMI 14.4 (11.9-15.5) Kg/m2) and 17 age and gender matched healthy, normal weight subjects (HW) (BMI 21.8 (18.9-24.9) Kg/m2) performed a rewa

Response in taste circuitry is not modulated by hunger and satiety in women remitted from bulimia nervosa.

Individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) engage in episodes of binge eating, marked by loss of control and eating despite fullness. Does altered reward and metabolic state contribute to BN pathophysiology? Normally, hunger increases (and satiety decreases) reward salience to regulate eating. We investigated whether BN is associated with an abnormal response in a neural circuit involved in translating taste signals into motivated behavior, when hungry and fed. Twenty-six women remitted from BN (RBN) and 22 control women (CW) were administered water and sucrose during 2 counterbalanced fMRI visits,

Effects of hunger level and tube diameter on the feeding behavior of teat-fed dairy calves.

Behavioral changes caused by variation in hunger have a great potential in health monitoring in dairy cattle. The present experiment used 48 Danish Holstein bull calves with a median age of 33 d. We examined the effect of different levels of hunger (reduced, in which calves were fed 1.5L of milk via esophageal tube before feeding; increased, in which calves were fed half milk ration at the previous feeding, or control, in which calves were fed normal ration at the previous feeding) on feeding behavior of calves fed via different tube diameters (6.0, 3.0, or 1.5mm). Behavior observed during a 4

Self-stimulation of the brain; its use to study local effects of hunger, sex, and drugs.

My conclusions are these: (i) The cells which mediate primary rewarding effects are located in a midline system running from the midbrain through the hypothalamus and midline thalamus and into the subcortical and cortical groups of the rhinencephalon. (ii) The cell groups which mediate primary rewarding effects are different from those which mediate primary punishing effects. (iii) Despite this relative independence, there are, undoubtedly, relationships of mutual inhibition existing between these two systems. Rewards do, among other things, tend to reduce sensitivity to pain, and punishments

Impact of hidden hunger on pregnant women from underserved communities and its role in anaemia.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies (MiNDs) during pregnancy contribute to anemia, preeclampsia, and poor fetal outcomes. We assessed the prevalence of MiNDs and their association with anemia among pregnant women in northern India. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 322 first-trimester pregnant women from low- to middle socioeconomic backgrounds. Haematology indices were measured on an automated analyser; vitamins (A, B1, B9, B12, D3) by LC-MS/MS; and trace elements (Fe, Zn, Cu, Se, Mn) by ICP-MS. RESULTS: Anaemia prevalence was 46.5 %. Anemic women had signific

Anti-inflammatory effects of hunger are transmitted to the periphery via projection-specific AgRP circuits.

Caloric restriction has anti-inflammatory effects. However, the coordinated physiological actions that lead to reduced inflammation in a state of caloric deficit (hunger) are largely unknown. Using a mouse model of injury-induced peripheral inflammation, we find that food deprivation reduces edema, temperature, and cytokine responses that occur after injury. The magnitude of the anti-inflammatory effect that occurs during hunger is more robust than that of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The effects of hunger are recapitulated centrally by activity in nutrient-sensing hypothalamic agout

Gender and Food insecurity in the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil: hunger through women's voices.

This paper presents the results of the research nested in the international project "Gender and COVID-19", which includes several topics related to the impact of the pandemic on the lives of women and their families, including food insecurity and hunger. Semi-structured interviews were conducted from December 2020 to November 2021 with 49 women living in two urban conglomerates, Cabana do Pai Tomás (Belo Horizonte, MG) and Sapopemba (São Paulo, SP), and two rural quilombola communities, Córrego do Rocha (Chapada do Norte, MG) and Córrego do Narciso (Araçuaí, MG). The analyses were based on the

Why the World Should Not Follow the Failed United States Model of Fighting Domestic Hunger.

Many industrialized nations have followed the lead of the United States (US) in reducing workers' wages and cutting government safety nets, while giving their populaces the false impression that non-governmental organizations can meet the food and basic survival needs of their low-income residents. The history of the last 50 years and the global COVID-19 pandemic demonstrate why that is a mistake, leading to vastly increased household food insecurity, poverty, and hunger. This paper takes a close look at US data to help to better understand the significant impact US federal government policy m

Zinc and Provitamin A Biofortified Maize Genotypes Exhibited Potent to Reduce Hidden-Hunger in Nepal.

Zinc deficiency affects one third of the population worldwide, and vitamin A deficiency is a prevalent public health issue in Sub-Saharan Africa and South-Asia, including Nepal. Crop biofortification is the sustainable solution to these health-related problems, thus we conducted two different field trials in an alpha lattice design to identify zinc and provitamin A biofortified maize genotypes consistent and competitive in performance over the contrasting seasons (Season 1: 18 February to 6 July 2020 and Season 2: 31 August to 1 February, 2020/21). In our study, the performance of introduced m

Effects of hunger on mood and affect reactivity to monetary reward in women with obesity - A pilot study.

Worldwide, nearly 3 million people die every year because of being overweight or obese. Although obesity is a metabolic disease, behavioral aspects are important in its etiology. Hunger changes the rewarding potential of food in normal-weight controls. In obesity, impairments related to reward processing are present, but it is not clear whether these are due to mental disorders more common among this population. Therefore, in this pilot study, we aimed at investigating whether fasting influence mood reactivity to reward in people with obesity. Women with obesity (n = 11, all mentally healthy)

The psychiatric management of prisoners on hunger strike: developing a management algorithm using the Delphi technique.

PURPOSE: The assessment and management of prisoners on hunger strikes in a custodial setting is complex. There is limited clinical guidance available for psychiatrists to draw upon in such cases. The purpose of this paper is to develop a management algorithm through expert elicitation to inform the psychiatric care of prisoners on a hunger strike. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A Delphi method was used to elicit views from Irish forensic psychiatrists, a legal expert and an expert in ethics using a structured questionnaire. Themes were extracted from the results of the questionnaire to propose

Hunger strikes in prisons: a narrative systematic review of ethical considerations from a physician's perspective.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to identify and review published studies that discuss the ethical considerations, from a physician's perspective, of managing a hunger strike in a prison setting. METHODS: A database search was conducted to identify relevant publications. We included case studies, case series, guidelines and review articles published over a 20-year period. Non-English language publications were translated. RESULTS: The review found 23 papers from 12 jurisdictions published in five languages suitable for inclusion. CONCLUSIONS: Key themes from included publications are identified and su

A prospective study of adolescent eating in the absence of hunger and body mass and fat mass outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Eating in the absence of hunger (EAH) refers to the consumption of palatable foods in a sated state. It has been proposed that EAH promotes excess weight gain in youth; yet there are limited prospective data to support this hypothesis. We examined whether EAH at baseline predicted increases in body mass (BMI and BMIz) and fat mass (kg) 1 year later among adolescent boys and girls. METHODS: EAH was assessed as adolescents' consumption of palatable snack foods following eating to satiety from an ad libitum lunch buffet. Parents also completed a questionnaire about their children's EA

Analgesic effects of dyspnoea: "Air hunger" does not inhibit the spinal nociception reflex in humans.

Dyspnoea has distinct sensory modalities, including air hunger and the sensation of excessive breathing "work/effort". Both have analgesic properties. In the case of work/effort, spinal mechanisms have been documented (inhibitory effect on the spinal nociceptive flexor reflex, RIII). This mechanism involves C-fibres. As C-fibres are unlikely to play a major role in air hunger, we hypothesised that inducing this type of dyspnoea would not result in RIII inhibition. Eight healthy volunteers were exposed to a hypercapnic hyperoxic gas mixture (5% CO2 and 95% O2) and asked to voluntarily fight the

All I saw was the cake. Hunger effects on attentional capture by visual food cues.

While effects of hunger on motivation and food reward value are well-established, far less is known about the effects of hunger on cognitive processes. Here, we deployed the emotional blink of attention paradigm to investigate the impact of visual food cues on attentional capture under conditions of hunger and satiety. Participants were asked to detect targets which appeared in a rapid visual stream after different types of task irrelevant distractors. We observed that food stimuli acquired increased power to capture attention and prevent target detection when participants were hungry. This oc

Household food insecurity with hunger is associated with women's food intakes, health and household circumstances.

This study investigated food intake patterns and contextual factors related to household food insecurity with hunger among a sample of 153 women in families seeking charitable food assistance in Toronto. Women in households characterized by food insecurity with severe or moderate hunger over the past 30 d (as assessed by the Food Security Module) reported lower intakes of vegetables and fruit, and meat and alternatives than those in households with no hunger evident. Women were more likely to report household food insecurity with hunger over the past 12 mo and 30 d if they also reported longst

The influence of hunger and breeding temperature on the venom production of the spider Cupiennius salei (Araneae, Ctenidae).

The venom production of the free hunting neotropic spider Cupiennius salei was tested under different breeding conditions. Three groups kept at different temperatures (17, 21 and 25 degrees C) showed that venom production remained stable within this temperature range, only at a temperature of 15 degrees C the spiders stopped feeding and venom synthesis. Hunger periods do not have a direct effect on the released venom quantity. Two groups of spiders--the first group after a four and the second after an eight weeks hunger period--were compared and no difference in venom production was found. Suc
