[Neuroimagings in neuronal migration disorders].

Recent progress in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has successfully visualized neuronal migration disorders (NMDs) without autopsy. NMDs are observed in the patients with hydranencephaly, porencephaly, cerebellar hypoplasia, agenesis of corpus callosum, agenesis of septum pellucidum and holoprocencephaly. Miller-Dieker syndrome, Fukuyama-type congenital muscular dystrophy, Walker-Warburg syndrome, hypomelanosis of Ito, congenital rubella syndrome, toxoplasmosis, Zellweger syndrome and other diseases are also associated with lissencephaly, pachygyria and polymicrogyria. Magnetic resonance imaging of intracranial malformations in dogs and cats.

Intracranial malformations may occur because of an inherent developmental defect or secondary to in utero injury to the brain with subsequent hypoplasia and atrophy. They can cause neurologic deficits in growing animals, although some anomalies may not produce clinical signs until adulthood. Malformations of the brain include hydrocephalus, hydranencephaly/porencephaly, holoprosencephaly, corpus callosum agenesis/dysgenesis, lissencephaly, polymicrogyria, meningoencephalocele, intracranial cysts, cerebellar malformations, and hamartomas. These conditions are defined and reviewed with an emphas

Cerebroarthrodigital syndrome: a newly recognized formal genesis syndrome in three patients with apparent arthromyodysplasia and sacral agenesis, brain malformation and digital hypoplasia.

We describe three patients with a complex syndrome of apparent arthromyodysplasia, dyscephaly, sacral agenesis, and hypoplastic digitis. Cause is unknown, but an environmental cause is suspected on the basis of ergotamine exposure in one case and diazoxide intake in another, together with suggestive similarities to anomalies seen in animals treated with these drugs and to calves with the Australian hydranencephaly/arthrogryposis syndrome caused by Akebane or Aino virus. Pathogenetically the primary defect may be a neural tube-neural crest dysplasia with multiple secondary and tertiary manifest

Aural temperature of the newborn infant.

The aural, oesophageal, and rectal temperatures of 10 term infants were monitored during changes in environmental temperature. The aural temperature in normal infants was found to be consistently higher than at any other site. It is suggested that this finding is due to the local heating effect of brain metabolism and shows the important contribution to total body heat production made by the brain. The depressed aural temperature found in an infant with hydranencephaly is cited as supporting evidence and may indicate the potential of aural temperature measurement in the investigation of cerebr

Ovine and Bovine Congenital Abnormalities Associated With Intrauterine Infection With Schmallenberg Virus.

In December 2011, a previously unknown congenital syndrome of arthrogryposis and hydranencephaly in sheep and cattle appeared in the Netherlands as an emerging epizootic due to Schmallenberg virus (SBV). Gross lesions in 102 lambs and 204 calves included porencephaly, hydranencephaly, cerebellar dysplasia and dysplasia of the brainstem and spinal cord, a flattened skull with brachygnathia inferior, arthrogryposis, and vertebral column malformations. Microscopic lesions in the central nervous system showed rarefaction and cavitation in the white matter, as well as degeneration, necrosis, and lo

Long-term functional evaluation of congenital hydrocephalus in infants and children.

In the past 20 years, 43 patients with congenital hydrocephalus underwent surgical treatment for hydrocephalus in our clinic (Myelomeningocele, Dandy-Walker syndrome, holoprosencephaly and hydranencephaly, which are frequently associated with dysgenesis of the corpus callosum, were excluded). The gestational stage at the onset of hydrocephalus was assessed on the basis of the morphology of the corpus callosum. The patients were then divided into four groups according to stage of onset. A relation between the stage of onset and the long-term functional scores was demonstrated. The earlier the g

Bovine hydrocephalus in North Dakota: a survey and morphologic study.

A survey of hydrocephalus in cattle in North Dakota in 1975 and 1976 included 26 proven cases falling into categories comparable to that seen in the human situation. The largest group was hydrocephalus secondary to aqueductal stenosis with the second largest group being hydranencephaly. Other groups included the Dandy-Walker malformation, porencephaly and a miscellaneous group having a variety of central nervous system malformations. All cases were sporadic with no evidence to suggest a genetic basis. The similarity suggests that calves could serve as a useful model for the human situation.

Ocular, naso-maxillary, and neural anomalies in raccoons, Procyon lotor (L.).

Congenital ocular and related anomalies were studied in two unrelated young raccoons. One animal was anophthalmic and had severe anomalies of the central nervous system, consisting of meningoencephalocele, pachygyria, hydranencephaly, cerebellar cavitation, syringomyelia, and other defects. A second animal was microphthalmic with congenital defects of the nose, maxilla and teeth. Ocular lesions were severe and included chorioretinal coloboma, retinal folds, disorganized neuroectodermal cell layers, spherophakia, cataract and other defects. The nose had unilateral abnormal epithelium, hair foll

An outbreak of Akabane disease in a cattle herd on the Mughan plain, Iran.

In November 2021, an investigation was conducted into an outbreak of abortion, stillbirth, and the birth of calves with congenital abnormalities (arthrogryposis and hydranencephaly) at a dairy farm in Dasht-e-Mughan city, Ardabil province. A total of 70 cows experienced these issues. To determine the cause of the outbreak, post-mortem brain tissue samples were collected from two calves affected by hydranencephaly, which occurred shortly after their birth. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing was conducted for multiple viruses, including bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), border disease, Akabane,

Absence of the septum pellucidum: a useful sign in the diagnosis of congenital brain malformations.

In a review of more than 2000 MR images of the brain we identified 35 patients with absence of the septum pellucidum. These patients were divided into seven basic groups as follows: septooptic dysplasia; schizencephaly; holoprosencephaly; agenesis of the corpus callosum; chronic, severe hydrocephalus; basilar encephaloceles; and porencephaly/hydranencephaly. Absence of the septum pellucidum was never seen as an isolated finding. By using data gathered from the review of the MR scans of patients in this study, we devised a diagnostic algorithm to aid in the classification of these patients. Abs

Diagnosis of brain neuropathology in utero.

The fetal brain can be evaluated very effectively with high-resolution real-time ultrasound equipment. This paper reviews normal fetal brain anatomy with specific emphasis on artifacts of ultrasound scanning of the brain. A review of the developmental abnormalities seen in utero include ventriculomegaly, anencephaly, encephalocele, meningomyelocele, Dandy-Walker syndrome, holoprosencephaly, craniosynostosis, microcephaly, and agenesis of the corpus callosum. The destructive lesions reviewed include hydranencephaly, infection, intracranial hemorrhage, and mass lesion. Identification of these ab

Congenital central nervous system anomalies.

Magnetic resonance imaging, because of its multiplanar capabilities and exquisite contrast differentiation, has risen above all other forms of in vivo imaging for the classification and determination of congenital central nervous system (CNS) anomalies. We briefly discuss pertinent aspects of CNS embryology and, using a recently proposed classification of central nervous system anomalies, present examples of a spectrum of abnormalities that one may encounter in practice. These anomalies include: the Chiari malformations, encephaloceles, holoprosencephaly, septooptic dysplasia, Dandy-Walker var

Generation of IPi002-A/B/C human induced pluripotent stem cell lines from MARCH amniotic fluid cells.

Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) have become a revolutionary tool in biomedical research due to their unique in vitro properties and fate versatility. They offer insights into development or genetic disorders, facilitate drug discovery and hold promise for regenerative medicine. Here we generated three hiPSC cells - IPi002-A/B/C - from primary amniotic fluid cells (AFCs) obtained via amniocentesis for the prenatal diagnosis of MARCH syndrome: Multinucleated neurons, Anhydramnios, Renal dysplasia, Cerebellar hypoplasia, and Hydranencephaly. These AFCs underwent reprogramming throug

Prenatal ultrasonic detection of anomalies with a lethal or disastrous outcome.

Although rare, a number of fetal anomalies can be detected with ultrasound in which the prognosis is either fetal death or minimal development. Anomalies of this type include anencephaly, holoprosencephaly, hydranencephaly, iniencephaly, cystic hygroma with hydrops, cystadenomatoid malformation of the lung with hydrops, conjoined twins of some types, renal agenesis, bilateral renal dysplasia, lethal dwarfing syndromes, and some forms of hydrops. Syndromes in which the severe form only are fatal include intracranial teratoma, encephalocele, pentalogy of Cantrell, vein of Galen aneurysm, the lim

Hypoplasia of the optic nerve.

Premorbid ophthalmoscopic and histopathologic findings were correlated in a case of bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia in a 9-month-old infant with bilateral hydranencephaly. The double-ring sign was due to an extension of retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) over the outer portion of the lamina cribrosa. The outer ring was the junction between sclera and lamina cribrosa, and the inner ring was the termination of the RPE. The center of the inner ring was the hypoplastic nerve head, which appeared whitish because of fibroglial tissue surrounding the central retinal vessels where they enter

NDE1-related disorders: A recurrent NDE1 pathogenic variant causing Lissencephaly 4 can also be associated with microhydranencephaly.

NudE Neurodevelopment Protein 1 (NDE1) gene encodes a protein required for microtubule organization, mitosis, and neuronal migration. Biallelic pathogenic variants of NDE1 gene are associated with structural central nervous system abnormalities, specifically microlissencephaly and microhydranencephaly. The root of these different phenotypes remains unclear. Here, we report a 20-year-old male patient referred to our clinics due to severe microcephaly, developmental delay, spastic quadriplegia, and dysmorphic features. The cranial computed tomography revealed abnormal brain structure and excess

Malformations among the X-linked intellectual disability syndromes.

Malformations are significant contributions to childhood mortality and disability. Their co-occurrence with intellectual disability may compound the health burden, requiring additional evaluation and management measures. Overall, malformations of greater or lesser severity occur in at least some cases of almost half of the 153 XLID syndromes. Genitourinary abnormalities are most common, but tend to contribute little or no health burden and occur in only a minority of cases of a given XLID syndrome. Some malformations (e.g., lissencephaly, hydranencephaly, long bone deficiency, renal agenesis/d

Hypothesis: septo-optic dysplasia is a vascular disruption sequence.

Septo-optic dysplasia, a variable combination of absence of the septum pellucidum, optic nerve hypoplasia, and pituitary abnormalities, makes little embryologic sense: components arise from different tissues and processes at different times, it is seen often with porencephaly, which is asymmetric, and rarely with other midline findings, genetic causes are exceptional, and occasional absence of the pituitary stalk is developmentally anomalous. Vascular vulnerabilities of components, anatomical overlap with findings of hydranencephaly and porencephaly, and a decreased maternal age effect similar
