OBJECTIVES: To determine prenatal and postnatal independent predictors of poor outcome, spontaneous resolution, or the need for surgery in patients with prenatal hydronephrosis.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of patients with prenatal hydronephrosis. The renal pelvis APD was measured in the third prenatal trimester ultrasound, as well as in the first and second postnatal ultrasound. AIM: Horseshoe kidney is often associated with other congenital abnormalities and obstruction of pyeloureteral segment (PUS). The aim of our study was to evaluate the results of laparoscopic pyeloplasty (LP) in patients with hydronephrosis of horseshoe kidney.

Hydronephrosis in pregnancy is common in the second and third trimester. Only a few cases are symptomatic, caused by a ureteric stone or by the pregnancy itself. The clinical dilemma is when to treat and when not to treat. We propose a multidisciplinary management based on renal ultrasonography to verify hydronephrosis and renography to diagnose obstructive hydronephrosis. Obstruction with a high intra-renal pressure must be treated to avoid kidney dysfunction. Patients with pyonephrosis need immediate treatment.

Antenatal hydronephrosis (ANH) is one of the most frequently detected abnormalities found on routine prenatal ultrasounds, affecting 1% to 4.5% of all pregnancies. Widespread antenatal screening has resulted in increased detection of anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract. The present guidelines update the recommendations published in 2000. Giant hydronephrosis in children is uncommon. Congenital ureteropelvic junction obstruction is the most frequent cause. The CT scan is very important for the diagnosis. A seventy-one-year-old woman was hospitalized at our institution for a right-sided "renal colic" associated with an infectious background. Alithiasic ureterohydronephrosis was diagnosed by imaging. A urinary diversion was thus performed using a double J endoureteral stent. The etiologic assessment of the hydronephrosis showed the presence of a periureteral mass that caused extrinsic ureteral compression. Involvement of the genitourinary tract by lymphoproliferative disorders is rare. Rapid proliferating Burkitt's lymphomas could mimic acute diseases. Due to the extreme chemosensitivity, the lymphoma is cureable and surgery should be done only for histology. Initial surgery should be restricted to acute abdominal complications or complete removal of localised resectable disease. In any case a multiagent chemotherapy is necessary.

Detailed antenatal sonography was performed on 18766 pregnant women between 1990 and 1994. Antenatal hydronephrosis, defined as an antero-posterior diameter of the renal pelvis (APPD) greater than 5 mm, was detected in 100 cases (0.59%).
