Chlamydia trachomatis is a bacterial human pathogen responsible for the development of trachoma, an infection leading to blindness, and is also the cause of the main bacterial sexually transmitted infection worldwide. Forty Swedish victims of halogenated hydroxyquinoline neurotoxicity were claimed by Dr Hansson in 1981. He had seen only a few of these patients himself. Furthermore, in half the number of patients a neurological examination had been performed only long ago or not at all. A survey of these cases has never been presented. In this study, we investigate the ability of Pythium insidiosum to form biofilms across various substrates and the antibiofilm efficacy of 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives (8-HQs). Biofilms of P. insidiosum were cultured on polystyrene plates, contact lenses, and horsehair. We provide the first evidence of P. insidiosum's biofilm-forming capability, thus considerably expanding our understanding of its transmission and pathogenesis. Acrodermatitis enteropathica, a heritable disease of zinc deficiency, was formerly amenable to treatment only with dihaloquinolinol drugs. A few cases of optic atrophy were reported in surviving patients and were proposed as examples of ocular drug toxicity, principally because of the association between iodochlorhydroxyquin and subacute myelo-optic neuropathy (SMON) in Japan. The NADH oxidase activity of stage V mother-cell membranes, isolated from sporulating Bacillus megaterium KM, shows a greater inhibition by cyanide and displays this response at lower concentrations of cyanide than the stage V forespore inner membrane. Comparison of the effects of various respiratory inhibitors reveals that the difference in cyanide sensitivity between these membranes is located on the oxidase side of the 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline N-oxide-sensitive step. Both membranes contain cytochromes a+a3, b-562, b-555, c and d, with three potential oxidases: cytochromes a+a3, o and d.
