Decreased sound tolerance in a Canadian University Context: Associations with autistic traits, social competence, and gender in an undergraduate sample.

Disorders of decreased sound tolerance such as misophonia and hyperacusis cause significant distress through strong negative emotional and physiological reactions to everyday sounds. These conditions have been associated with poor mental and physical health as they impact day to day life. Prior to the recent development of consensus definitions of misophonia and hyperacusis, attempts to determine the prevalence of these conditions have been hindered by the ambiguity and inconsistency of their descriptions. Despite this, certain populations have been suggested to more frequently experience miso

[Dysfunction of medial olivocochlear system and its audiological test].

The function of medial olivocochlear system (MOC) in patients with three kinds of auditory diseases was tested in order to investigate the relationship between MOC and retrocochlear impairment. Suppressive effect of evoked otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) by contralateral white noise was used as the indicator to evaluate the function of MOC in patients with: (1) sensorineural deafness with definite otoacoustic emissions, (2) hyperacusis and (3) tinnitus. Dysfunction of MOC was found in nine cases out of sixteen patients with sensorineural deafness and six cases out of fifteen patients with tinnitu

Hypersensitivity to sound--questionnaire data, audiometry and classification.

This study included consecutive case histories and audiometry of 100 patients with hypersensitivity to sounds. There are several different conditions with the symptom of hypersensitivity to sounds. Hyperacusis is one of those and is seldom described in the literature. The term hyperacusis is often used synonymously with hypersensitivity to sound. We propose that there is a specific condition that could be termed hyperacusis. Hyperacusis is often elicited by loud sounds or by a number of other traumata or diseases. It is not typical of occupational noise exposure (with the exception of exposure

Auditory Quality-of-Life Measures in Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury and Normal Pure Tone Audiometry.

Auditory complaints are commonly reported following traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, few studies have examined patient-reported auditory symptomatology and quality-of-life metrics in individuals with TBI. We hypothesize that following TBI, individuals can experience auditory symptoms even with hearing thresholds in the normal range. Adult patients with normal auditory thresholds and a history of TBI were evaluated for subjective hearing loss, tinnitus, aural fullness, hyperacusis, and autophony. Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory, and Hyperacusis Questionn

Cross-modal cortical circuit for sound sensitivity in neuropathic pain.

Hyperacusis, exaggerated sensitivity to sound, frequently accompanies chronic pain in humans, suggesting interactions between different sensory systems in the brain. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this comorbidity remain largely unexplored. In this study, behavioral tests measuring sound-evoked pupil dilation and reaction times to lick water following auditory stimuli showed hyperacusis-like behaviors in neuropathic pain model mice. Through viral tracing, fiber photometry, and multi-electrode recordings, we identified glutamatergic projections from primary somatosensory cortex (S1HL

What Do Mismatch Negativity (MMN) Responses Tell Us About Tinnitus?

Due to the heterogeneous causes, symptoms and associated comorbidities with tinnitus, there remains an unmet need for a clear biomarker of tinnitus presence. Previous research has suggested a "final pathway" of tinnitus presence, which occurs regardless of the specific mechanisms that resulted in alterations of auditory predictions and, eventually, tinnitus perception. Predictive inference mechanisms have been proposed as the possible basis for this final unifying pathway. A commonly used measure of prediction violation is mismatch negativity (MMN), an electrical potential generated in respons

Tinnitus, diminished sound-level tolerance, and elevated auditory activity in humans with clinically normal hearing sensitivity.

Phantom sensations and sensory hypersensitivity are disordered perceptions that characterize a variety of intractable conditions involving the somatosensory, visual, and auditory modalities. We report physiological correlates of two perceptual abnormalities in the auditory domain: tinnitus, the phantom perception of sound, and hyperacusis, a decreased tolerance of sound based on loudness. Here, subjects with and without tinnitus, all with clinically normal hearing thresholds, underwent 1) behavioral testing to assess sound-level tolerance and 2) functional MRI to measure sound-evoked activatio

The Effect of Lifetime Noise Exposure and Aging on Speech-Perception-in-Noise Ability and Self-Reported Hearing Symptoms: An Online Study.

Animal research shows that aging and excessive noise exposure damage cochlear outer hair cells, inner hair cells, and the synapses connecting inner hair cells with the auditory nerve. This may translate into auditory symptoms such as difficulty understanding speech in noise, tinnitus, and hyperacusis. The current study, using a novel online approach, assessed and quantified the effects of lifetime noise exposure and aging on (i) speech-perception-in-noise (SPiN) thresholds, (ii) self-reported hearing ability, and (iii) the presence of tinnitus. Secondary aims involved documenting the effects o

Mechanisms underlying auditory processing deficits in Fragile X syndrome.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are strongly associated with auditory hypersensitivity or hyperacusis (difficulty tolerating sounds). Fragile X syndrome (FXS), the most common monogenetic cause of ASD, has emerged as a powerful gateway for exploring underlying mechanisms of hyperacusis and auditory dysfunction in ASD. This review discusses examples of disruption of the auditory pathways in FXS at molecular, synaptic, and circuit levels in animal models as well as in FXS individuals. These examples highlight the involvement of multiple mechanisms, from aberrant synaptic development and ion chan

Small molecule modulation of the large-conductance calcium-activated potassium channel suppresses salicylate-induced tinnitus in mice.

Tinnitus is the phantom perception of sound that has no external source. A neurological signature of tinnitus, and the frequently associated hyperacusis, is an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory activity in the central auditory system (CAS), leading to dysregulated network excitability. The large conductance, calcium-activated potassium (BK) channel is a key player in pre- and post-synaptic excitability through its mediation of K+ currents. Changes in BK channel activity are associated with aberrant network activity in sensory regions of the CNS, raising the possibility that BK channe

Loudness perception affected by early age hearing loss.

Tinnitus and hyperacusis, commonly seen in adults, are also reported in children. Although clinical studies found children with tinnitus and hyperacusis often suffered from recurrent otitis media, there is no direct study on how temporary hearing loss in the early age affects the sound loudness perception. In this study, sound loudness changes in rats affected by perforation of the tympanic membranes (TM) have been studied using an operant conditioning based behavioral task. We detected significant increases of sound loudness and susceptibility to audiogenic seizures (AGS) in rats with bilater

DPOAE in estimation of the function of the cochlea in tinnitus patients with normal hearing.

OBJECTIVE: The most probable place generating tinnitus in the auditory pathway is the outer hair cells (OHCs) inside the cochlea. Otoacoustic emissions are used to assess their activity. The objective of the investigation was to measure the features of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) in a group of tinnitus patients without hearing loss, estimate the diagnostic value of the parameters for the analysis of cochlear function in the patients, emphasizing those most useful in localizing tinnitus generators, and determine the hypothetical influence of hyperacusis and misophony on DPO
