Quantification of sweat secretion in focal axillary hyperhidrosis related to area and time: the hyperhidrosis area and secretion index.

BACKGROUND: Severity of focal axillary hyperhidrosis (FAH) hitherto is estimated semiquantitatively by weighting the secreted sweat with the sweating area visualized by iodine starch test. In this study, we quantified secretion (mg/cm(2) per min) simply by estimating the sweating area morphometrically via point counting. We have named the numeric value obtained the hyperhidrosis area and secretion index (HASI). METHODS: In 183 patients (146 women, 37 men) with focal axillary hyperhidrosis, seen in a city hospital outpatient clinic, sweat secretion was assessed by gravimetry and the area of Mi

Quality of life before hyperhidrosis treatment as a predictive factor for oxybutynin treatment outcomes in palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Studies have suggested that quality of life (QOL) evaluation before video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy for patients with hyperhidrosis may serve as a predictive factor for positive postoperative outcomes. Our study aims to analyze if this tendency is also observed in patients treated with oxybutynin for palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis. METHODS: Five hundred sixty-five patients who submitted to a protocol treatment with oxybutynin were retrospectively analyzed between January 2007 and January 2012 and were divided into 2 groups according to QOL assessment before treatment

Robotic ramicotomy for palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis.

Ramicotomy is a surgical approach that focuses on dividing the rami communicantes of the sympathetic chain and has been introduced as a treatment for palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis with the goal of reducing the incidence of compensatory sweating. Evidence from recent randomized controlled studies and meta-analyses suggests that this technique effectively reduces localized excessive sweating while resulting in lower rates of compensatory hyperhidrosis and less postoperative hand dryness compared with traditional sympathetic chain interruption. Despite these advantages, ramicotomy has been li

Epidemiology of Hyperhidrosis in Danish Blood Donors.

The risk factors and disease implications of hyper-hidrosis are unknown. The objectives of this retrospective cohort study were to estimate the prevalence of hyperhidrosis and to compare demographic, life-style, and socioeconomic parameters in blood donors with and without self-reported or hospital-diagnosed hyperhidrosis. The study included blood donors from the Danish Blood Donor Study for the period 2010-2019. Registry data were collected from Statistics Denmark. Overall, 2,794 of 30,808 blood donors (9.07%; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 8.75-9.40) had self- reported hyperhidrosis and 28

Examining hyperhidrosis: an update on new treatments.

Primary hyperhidrosis is a debilitating condition that causes significant distress and financial burden for affected patients, triggering them to seek medical care for their excessive sweating. Once a diagnosis of primary hyperhidrosis has been established, treatment is initiated to help control sweat production and increase quality of life. While there are no current guidelines in the United States for the treatment of primary hyperhidrosis, there are International Hyperhidrosis Society guidelines that clinicians can use. Currently, a step-therapy approach with the least invasive treatments p

Microwave Treatment for Axillary Hyperhidrosis and Bromhidrosis.

Axillary hyperhidrosis (AH) and bromhidrosis are common causes of consultation in dermatology. Currently, the most widely prescribed treatment for AH is botulinum toxin, a very effective but temporary option; it is totally ineffective in bromhidrosis. Sympathectomy is an increasingly infrequent choice of treatment due to the high incidence of compensatory hyperhidrosis. We describe the treatment of AH and bromhidrosis with a novel microwave device that can fibrose eccrine and apocrine glands, achieving possibly permanent results. The procedure should preferably be performed under tumescent ane

Thoracoscopic sympathicotomy in the treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperhidrosis interferes with social activities and requires an effective and safe treatment. We aimed to compare the therapeutic outcomes of unilateral single-port sympathicotomy and open surgery. METHODS: Forty patients with primary palmar hyperhidrosis underwent sympathicotomy; 20 had open surgery, and 20 had video-assisted thoracic surgery. Complete resection of the T1 to T4 ganglia was performed by open surgery, and cutting and cauterization of the sympathetic chain between the T2 and T3 ganglia in the dominant hand was undertaken using video-assisted thoracic surgery

Hyperhidrosis and bromhidrosis -- a guide to assessment and management.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis and bromhidrosis are two common conditions, which are troublesome for patients and carry a significant psychosocial burden. OBJECTIVE: This article details an approach to the assessment and management of hyperhidrosis and bromhidrosis, and outlines current treatment options. DISCUSSION: Hyperhidrosis can be either generalised or focal. Generalised hyperhidrosis may be primary and idiopathic or secondary to systemic disease. Treatment may require oral anticholinergic agents. Focal hyperhidrosis is usually primary and responds to topical measures. Specialist referral

[Botulinum toxin in focal hyperhidrosis. An update].

Eight years after its approval, intralesional injections of botulinum toxin type A have become established as an easily performed, highly effective and almost complication-free therapeutic option in primary axillary hyperhidrosis. Sweat production is decreased to about a sixth of previous amounts, and the effect persists for 7 months on average. Restoration of the often significantly impaired quality of life has been convincingly documented in large studies. The effect of botulinum toxin is based on the inhibition of the release of acetylcholine into the synaptic cleft. In addition to this app

Comparing Botox and Xeomin for axillar hyperhidrosis.

Recently, Xeomin, a novel botulinum toxin (BT) type A drug became available. Separation of complexing proteins reduced the size of its BT component, thus potentially affecting its tissue diffusion, adverse effect profile and therapeutic properties. We report the first use of Xeomin in an autonomic indication. A total of 46 patients (34 females, 12 males, age 32.7 +/- 13.2 years, disease duration 14.2 +/- 12.0 years) with symmetric bilateral idiopathic axillar hyperhidrosis and a previously stable Botox treatment received 50 MU of BT in 5 ml of 0.9% NaCl/H(2)0 in each axilla. The patient, the i

Hyperhidrosis: evolving concepts and a comprehensive review.

Hyperhidrosis (primary or secondary) describes a disorder of excessive sweating. It has a significant negative impact on quality of life and affects nearly 1% of the population living in the United Kingdom (UK). Axillary involvement is the most common affecting 80% of cases. A common link to these disorders is an extreme non-thermoregulatory sympathetic stimulus of exocrine sweat glands, mostly due to emotional stimuli. Non-surgical treatment involves topical medication, iontophoresis and systemic anti-cholinergics. More recently the use of intradermal botulinum toxin has gained popularity. Su

Hyperhidrosis: what is it and why does it occur?

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating in response to heat or emotional stimuli beyond physiologic need. The ailment is not new and has been described in the literature dating back several centuries. It can be classified as either primary or secondary based on its etiology. Mechanisms that cause excessive sweating can be traced to the sympathetic nervous system, part of the autonomic nervous system. It has been speculated that the primary abnormality is central, and that the hypothalamic sweat center that controls the palms, axillae, and soles is distinct in hyperhidrosis individuals.
