Periodontal effects of surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion evaluated clinically and with cone-beam computerized tomography: 6-month preliminary results.

INTRODUCTION: Transverse maxillary deficiency is frequently observed in patients who seek orthodontic treatment. In skeletally mature patients, transverse maxillary deficiency can be treated with surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE). Forces delivered by the expander produce areas of compression in the periodontal ligament, which could lead to alveolar bone resorption and possible changes in the attachment level. The aim of this prospective clinical study was to evaluate the periodontal effects of SARPE by means of a complete clinical evaluation and cone-beam computerized tomogra

Altitudinal cross-sectional study of the sand fly fauna of the highlands of Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), caused by Leishmania aethiopica and transmitted by Phlebotomus longipes, is endemic in northern Ethiopia. However, sand fly fauna is poorly documented in the northern Tigray region. High-altitude CL cases have also been observed, but their local acquisition is uncertain. To identify the faunal composition, their geographical and altitudinal distribution, cross-sectional surveys were conducted in ten villages (average altitude range: 2411 - 3186 meters) with confirmed CL cases across four endemic districts of the region. A total of 170 light trap-nights

Orthodontic Management of a Growing Patient With a Skeletal Class III Malocclusion and an Anterior Open Bite: A Case Report.

Class III malocclusion presents many challenges due to its varying elements of imbalance in skeletal, dental, and soft tissues. This necessitates a comprehensive treatment plan, including growth modification during the pre-pubertal growth phase, and long-term retention to reduce the chances of orthognathic surgery later. The components of Class III malocclusion include maxillary retrognathism, mandibular prognathism, or, in some cases, a combination of both. This article presents a case report of a pre-pubertal female patient, 11.5 years old, with skeletal Class III malocclusion, who sought or

The effects of micro-implant assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) on the nasomaxillary complex--a finite element method (FEM) analysis.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic palatal expansion appliances have been widely used with satisfactory and, most often, predictable clinical results. Recently, clinicians have successfully utilized micro-implants with palatal expander designs to work as anchors to the palate to achieve more efficient skeletal expansion and to decrease undesired dental effects. The purpose of the study was to use finite element method (FEM) to determine the stress distribution and displacement within the craniofacial complex when simulated conventional and micro-implant-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) expansion
