Ultra-low anterior resection for low rectal cancer is usually done with a covering ileostomy as a safety measure to reduce the consequences of distal anastomotic failure. In many centres, distal loopogram is performed routinely, prior to the closure of the loop ileostomy, to assess the integrity of anastomosis. Distal loopogram is generally considered a safe procedure with very low complication rates, especially when water-soluble contrast is used. We report two cases of delayed bowel perforation which led to severe sepsis and generalized peritonitis after distal loopogram prior to ileostomy c

BACKGROUND: Despite the advantages of diverting loop ileostomy construction, it is related to complications.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the risk factors for complications after loop ileostomy closure.
METHODS: Patients who underwent loop ileostomy closure from January 2010 to March 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine the effect of the potential risk factors on the rate of each complication.
RESULTS: A total of 136 patients underwent reversal. Indications for the initial operation were colorectal cancer (39.7%), div

UNLABELLED: For patients with an ostomy, a poor fitting appliance may cause leakage, peristomal dermatitis, and frequent appliance changes.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this case study was to report the outcome of fat grafting to augment peristomal soft tissue and improve appliance fit.
CASE STUDY: A 57-year-old woman with a history of Crohn's disease presented with soft-tissue deficiency and uneven contour around her ileostomy site. She was unable to properly fit an ostomy appliance, which resulted in leakage, chronic skin irritation, and frequent appliance changes. The patient underwent 2 round

INTRODUCTION: A protective loop ileostomy for a distal anastomosis of the rectum or anus, decreases the risk of sepsis secondary to anastomotic leak or dehiscence. This study examines whether the surgical technique employed in the construction of the anastomosis (open vs. laparoscopic) alters the subsequent closure of ileostomy.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to determine whether at the time of a protective ileostomy closure, the fact of doing an initial laparoscopic surgery has advantages over those who underwent open surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a comparative and retrospect

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of retrograde ileostomy radiographic examination for detecting small-bowel abnormalities in patients with ileostomies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our database contained the records of 35 patients who had undergone retrograde ileostomy examinations from 1999-2005 and fulfilled our inclusion criteria. The images from the examinations were reviewed to determine the frequency and nature of small-bowel abnormalities, whether lateral views were obtained, and whether the catheter tip was withdrawn to the stoma. The accuracy of these examina

Seventy-one women who had a proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis (n = 41) or Crohn's disease (n = 30) were interviewed in the follow-up clinic about gynaecological problems and fertility. All women were examined by an independent gynaecologist and abnormalities of the internal genital tract were registered. Forty-nine per cent (35/71) of the women had a distressing vaginal discharge after proctocolectomy, compared with 9% (6/71) before surgery. At the gynaecological examination 45% (32/71) had a heavy vaginal secretion with- out any signs of an acute vaginal infection. In 68% (30/44) fluid r

BACKGROUND/AIMS: : Morphological and functional changes occur after loop ileostomy surgery such as villous atrophy and decreased contractility. This study aims to examine the changes in motility of the proximal and distal limbs of the ileostomy. Morphological, molecular and functional approaches of smooth muscle are attempted to elucidate the cause of the changes in motility.
METHODS: : Full thickness strips of circular muscle were prepared from 25 patients (median age 64 years). Western blot was performed to quantify the expression of contractile proteins. Expression of genes was quantified

Temporary loop ileostomies are common after colorectal cancer surgery to reduce anastomotic leak severity. However, ileostomy takedown carries risks like surgical site infections (SSIs) and incisional hernias. The optimal fascial closure technique during takedown remains debated. This study compared these techniques regarding postoperative complications. This retrospective study analyzed data from 69 patients undergoing scheduled loop ileostomy closure between 2016-2020 at two Romanian surgical departments. Data collected included demographics, clinical variables (ASA score, comorbidities), su

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Intestinal homeostasis is closely associated with the normal intestinal luminal physiological environment. Temporary loop ileostomy changes the intestinal structure and diverts the fecal stream, thereby disturbing the intestinal environment. This study aimed to clarify the changing situation of the human intestinal mucosa barrier in the absence of a fecal stream after loop ileostomy.
METHODS: We obtained paired samples from the fed (fecal stream maintained) and unfed (no fecal stream) portions of the loop ileostomy and subjected these samples to RNA sequencing. We also det

BACKGROUND: Diverting ileostomy is utilized to protect high-risk anastomoses, though it is not shown to reduce the leak rate it may reduce the severe consequences of an anastamotic leak. In recent years mesh development has advanced to allow placement of meshes into potentially contaminated fields, such as an ostomy closure site.
METHOD: A retrospective review of all ileostomy closure procedures in Gold Coast from 1st January 2011 until 31st December 2018 were included. Patient demographics and surgical outcomes and follow up reviewed to identify any cases of incisional hernia relating to ost

PURPOSE: In the era of biological therapy of ulcerative colitis (UC), surgical treatment frequently consists of colectomy, end ileostomy, and rectal stump closure before patients go on towards restorative proctocolectomy. We aimed to evaluate possible risk factors for the occurrence of postoperative complications and investigate those after initial colectomy in these patients.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 180 patients (76 female, 104 male) undergoing colectomy for UC with formation of a rectal stump and terminal ileostomy between March 2008 and March 2018 at Charité University Hospital

Acute colonic pseudo-obstruction (ACPO), or Ogilvie's syndrome, is a rare clinical entity in which there is massive non-toxic colonic dilatation in the absence of a mechanically obstructing lesion. It is an important yet poorly recognised cause of surgical morbidity and mortality occurring typically in elderly patients with multiple comorbidities. ACPO can often be reversed conservatively with colonoscopic or nasogastric decompression. Surgical intervention is seldom necessary. We present a case of Ogilvie's syndrome in which a healthy 76-year-old man developed life-threatening pseudo-obstruct

INTRODUCTION: Rectal cancer continues to be devastating malignancy worldwide. Sphincter preservation is the need of the hour. Distal anastomosis is more prone to leaks. Proximal diversion in form of ileostomy may be used to protect distal anastomosis.
AIM: To compare two groups of low anterior resection with and without diversion ileostomy in rectal cancer patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective, hospital based study of 78 rectal carcinoma patients were taken for the study. Inclusion criteria was operable rectal cancer 4-12 cm from anal verge. Patients were randomized into two groups.

BACKGROUND: Surgical neonates with complex intestinal conditions, such as enterocolitis, midgut volvulus with bowel loss and multiple atresias, often require temporary stomas. Little is known on the postsurgical response of the altered gut segments, although adaptation is an important consideration in neonatal postoperative care, particularly after stoma closure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats underwent bowel resection at a point 15 cm proximal to the ileocecal valve, and a split ileostomy was performed. On the 6th postoperative day the mucosal thickness was calculated with Soft Imaging System A

The operative diagnosis of colonic ischaemia in association with acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP) may be difficult in the absence of unequivocal transmural necrosis or perforation. We introduced in May 1988 a new policy whereby, when colonic viability was dubious, resection was avoided and a diverting loop ileostopy (DLI) was performed. If necrosectomy led to extensive mobilization of the splenic flexure with a capillary drainage system placed in close contact, a DLI was again performed. Colectomy was only performed for unequivocal transmural necrosis. Among 30 patients operated on for ANP
