AI caption generation model for digital pathology of adenocarcinoma in endoscopic histopathology using multi-instance attention mechanisms.

Gastric adenocarcinoma is a leading cause of cancer related mortality worldwide, and histopathologic examination of endoscopic biopsy samples remains essential for its diagnosis and grading. In this study, we propose a novel AI based caption generation model, termed MIAC (Multi-instance Attention Captioning), designed to produce descriptive diagnostic reports from digital pathology images. The model leverages a Multi-instance learning framework with permutation-invariant self attention to aggregate features from multiple histopathology image patches into a unified representation, effectively c

STFNet: A spatial-temporal feature aggregation network for breast lesion segmentation in ultrasound videos.

Accurate segmentation of lesions in ultrasound is critical for early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. Previous studies have mainly focused on static 2D images, ignoring the clinical scenarios in which sonographers make a diagnosis based on continuous and dynamic scanning results. Ultrasound video can provide more detailed information about the lesion and its surrounding tissues. However, the automatic segmentation of breast lesions in ultrasound videos presents challenges due to the complex spatial and temporal variations within the images. To address this, we introduce STFNet (Spatia

Evaluating multi-task network architectures for simultaneous breast lesion segmentation and classification in ultrasound images.

Breast lesion segmentation and classification in ultrasound (US) images are two essential tasks for computer-aided diagnosis of breast cancer. However, these tasks are still challenging, mainly due to the high variability of lesions and the poor image quality of US. Numerous deep learning methods have been proposed to assist physicians in performing breast lesion segmentation and classification. Considering that these tasks are related to common features, learning them jointly through multi-task learning (MTL) represents a viable approach to improve the performance of each individual task. Task-agnostic explainable contrastive learning model for malignant cell detection in urine cytology.

Bladder cancer remains one of the most prevalent urological malignancies, where early detection is critical for improving patient outcomes. Urine cytology provides a non-invasive and cost-effective screening modality; however, the development of automated diagnostic systems is challenged by the scarcity of expert-annotated data and the limited interpretability of deep learning models. To address these challenges, we propose EnBCDet, an explainable self-supervised framework for malignant cell detection in urine cytology images. The proposed approach leverages contrastive self-supervised learnin

Retinal OCT image segmentation with deep learning: A review of advances, datasets, and evaluation metrics.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a widely used imaging technology in ophthalmic clinical practice, providing non-invasive access to high-resolution retinal images. Segmentation of anatomical structures and pathological lesions in retinal OCT images, directly impacts clinical decisions. While commercial OCT devices segment multiple retinal layers in healthy eyes, their performance degrades severely under pathological conditions. In recent years, the rapid advancements in deep learning have significantly driven research in OCT image segmentation. This review provides a comprehensive overvie

Disentangling representations of retinal images with generative models.

Retinal fundus images play a crucial role in the early detection of eye diseases. However, the impact of technical factors on these images can pose challenges for reliable AI applications in ophthalmology. For example, large fundus cohorts are often confounded by factors such as camera type, bearing the risk of learning shortcuts rather than the causal relationships behind the image generation process. Here, we introduce a population model for retinal fundus images that effectively disentangles patient attributes from camera effects, enabling controllable and highly realistic image generation.

Self-supervised deep metric learning for prototypical zero-shot lesion retrieval in placenta whole-slide images.

Postnatal adverse outcomes can often be explained and predicted by the pathological evaluation of the placenta after a pregnancy. However, placenta whole-slide image (WSI) analysis is not performed systematically due to the specialized skills required. There is no public dataset available for placenta WSIs and precise annotations on private datasets are very limited. Furthermore, we show that in this context of low data regime and scarcity of expert annotations, current computational pathology foundation models struggle to generalize to the specific case of the placental tissue. We propose a n

A generative model uses healthy and diseased image pairs for pixel-level chest X-ray pathology localization.

Medical artificial intelligence (AI) offers potential for automatic pathological interpretation, but a practicable AI model demands both pixel-level accuracy and high explainability for diagnosis. The construction of such models relies on substantial training data with fine-grained labelling, which is impractical in real applications. To circumvent this barrier, we propose a prompt-driven constrained generative model to produce anatomically aligned healthy and diseased image pairs and learn a pathology localization model in a supervised manner. This paradigm provides high-fidelity labelled dat

BUS-M2AE: Multi-scale Masked Autoencoder for Breast Ultrasound Image Analysis.

Masked AutoEncoder (MAE) has demonstrated significant potential in medical image analysis by reducing the cost of manual annotations. However, MAE and its recent variants are not well-developed for ultrasound images in breast cancer diagnosis, as they struggle to generalize to the task of distinguishing ultrasound breast tumors of varying sizes. This limitation hinders the model's ability to adapt to the diverse morphological characteristics of breast tumors. In this paper, we propose a novel Breast UltraSound Multi-scale Masked AutoEncoder (BUS-M2AE) model to address the limitations of the ge

MedScale-Former: Self-guided multiscale transformer for medical image segmentation.

Accurate medical image segmentation is crucial for enabling automated clinical decision procedures. However, existing supervised deep learning methods for medical image segmentation face significant challenges due to their reliance on extensive labeled training data. To address this limitation, our novel approach introduces a dual-branch transformer network operating on two scales, strategically encoding global contextual dependencies while preserving local information. To promote self-supervised learning, our method leverages semantic dependencies between different scales, generating a superv

Meta-learners for few-shot weakly-supervised optic disc and cup segmentation on fundus images.

Automatic optic disc (OD) and optic cup (OC) segmentation is essential for glaucoma diagnosis, but limited labeled data remain a major challenge. We address this by developing meta-learners for few-shot weakly-supervised segmentation (FWS). The weak supervision is in the form of sparse labels where only a few pixels are labeled. We significantly improve existing meta-learners by introducing Omni meta-training that enhances data utilization and diversifies the number of shots. We also develop efficient versions that reduce computational costs while maintaining strong performance. In addition, w

Automated recognition and counting of the immunoreactive neuroendocrine cells in chronic gastritis (the preliminary study).

The paper presents the designed software CAMI (Computerized Analysis of Microscopic Images) for a digital reconstruction of the diversiform glands seen in chronic inflammatory gastric mucosa, and for automated recognition and quantization of the immunoreactive neuroendocrine (NE) cells appearing within mucosal glands. Digital reconstruction of the individual gastric gland is difficult due to variable shapes of the glandular cross-sections. Fifteen gastric biopsy specimens representing chronic gastritis were stained routinely with H+E and immunohistochemically with 3 NE markers: Chromogranin A,

Enhanced MobileNet with multi-scale feature fusion for automated breast cancer histopathology classification.

Accurate and efficient diagnosis of breast cancer from histopathological images remains a major challenge in clinical practice due to subjective interpretation, inter-observer variability, and labor-intensive manual examination. To address these limitations, this work introduces a transfer learning-based framework for automated breast cancer classification using the Breast Cancer Histology Images (BACH) dataset. Several pre-trained deep architectures-including MobileNet, ResNet variants, EfficientNet, and Vision Transformers-were evaluated and extended with a Multi-Scale Feature Fusion (MSFF)

Attention dual transformer with adaptive temporal convolutional for diabetic retinopathy detection.

An Attention Dual Transformer with Adaptive Temporal Convolutional (ADT-ATC) model is proposed in this research work for enhanced detection of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) from retinal fundus images. Unlike traditional methods which evolved so far in DR analysis, the proposed model specifically processes the multi-scale spatial features through dual spatial transformer network and captures the temporal dependencies through adaptive temporal convolutional unit. The fine patterns like microaneurysms, and larger anatomical regions, including hemorrhages are focused on dual spatial transformer block

Acquire continuous and precise score for fundus image quality assessment: FTHNet and FQS dataset.

The retinal fundus images are extensively utilized in diagnosis, and their quality may affect diagnostic results. However, due to limitations in the datasets and algorithms, current fundus image quality assessment (FIQA) methods often lack the granularity required to meet clinical demands. To address these limitations, we introduce a new benchmark FIQA dataset, Fundus Quality Score, which contains 2,246 images annotated with continuous mean opinion scores ranging from 0 to 100 and three-level quality categories. Meanwhile, we also design a novel FIQA Transformer-based Hypernetwork (FTHNet). Th
