The existence of yawning across a diverse array of species has led many researchers to postulate its neurological significance. One hypothesis, which has garnered recent support, posits that yawns function to cool the brain by flushing hyperthermic blood away from the skull while simultaneously introducing a cooler arterial supply. The current study tested this hypothesis by examining how manipulations aimed at modifying carotid artery temperature, which in turn directly alters cranial temperature, influences contagious yawning in humans. Participants held either a warm (46 °C), cold (4 °C) or

Controlling neural representations of the self and other people is fundamental to social cognition. Brain imaging studies have implicated the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) in this ability, but causal evidence for its role is lacking. A debate is also ongoing regarding whether the control of, or switching between, self and other representations is a specialized or domain-general process: the rTPJ's well-established role in reorienting attention supports a domain-general process, but a role specific to social cognition has also been proposed. Neuronavigated repetitive transcranial magnet

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a vasculitis which involves in a systemic fashion the mean and medium sized arteries. Intracranial vessels are exceptionally involved. Thus, stroke is an uncommon complication. We report a patient with typical GCA with blindness due to occlusion of the central artery of the retina, who developed an imitation and utilization behavior attributable to bilateral frontal infarction without accompanying neurological symptoms. Although histological study was not available, this case fulfilled all of Russi's criteria for GCA localized in the CNS. This lends support to the

INTRODUCTION: The presence of frontal and/or temporal atrophy on neuroimaging has been designated as supportive in the clinical consensus criteria for behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). As magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has a relatively low sensitivity for bvFTD, a substantial proportion of patients may present with a normal MRI. Thus, there may be clinical differences between patients with and without lobar abnormalities on MRI. We compared clinical characteristics of bvFTD patients with frontotemporal lobar atrophy on MRI to those lacking the typical pattern at presentatio

Apraxia is an umbrella term for different disorders of higher motor abilities that are not explained by elementary sensorimotor deficits (e. g. paresis or ataxia). Characteristic features of apraxia that are easy to recognize in clinical practice are difficulties in pantomimed or actual use of tools as well as in imitation of meaningless gestures. Apraxia is bilateral, explaining the cognitive motor disorders and occurs frequently (but not exclusively) after left hemispheric lesions, as well as in neurodegenerative diseases, such as corticobasal syndrome and Alzheimer's disease. Apraxic defici

Automatic imitation refers to the unconscious tendency to copy observed actions, a phenomenon that is robustly weaker when observing robots compared to humans. The present study investigated whether individual differences in the tendency to adopt the intentional stance (the epistemic strategy to attribute mental states to an agent or entity to predict/explain its behaviours) modulates this automatic imitation bias against robots. To do so, participants completed an online Automatic Imitation Task using both human and robotic hands, along with the Intentional Stance Test-2 (IST-2) and measures

Are there brain regions that are specialized for the execution of imitative actions? We compared two hypotheses of imitation: the mirror neuron system (MNS) hypothesis predicts frontal and parietal engagement which is specific to imitation, while the Grist-Mills hypothesis predicts no difference in brain activation between imitative and matched non-imitative actions. Our delayed imitation fMRI paradigm included two tasks, one where correct performance was defined by a spatial rule and another where it was defined by an item-based rule. For each task, participants could learn a sequence from a

The mirror neuron system (MNS), including the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and superior temporal sulcus (STS) plays an important role in action representation and imitation and may be dysfunctional in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, it's not clear how these three regions respond and interact during the imitation of different basic facial expressions and whether the pattern of responses is influenced by autistic traits. Thus, we conducted a natural facial expression (happiness, angry, sadness and fear) imitation task in 100 healthy male subjects where ex

Apraxia is frequently described after left hemisphere stroke and results from lesions to a complex network for motor cognition with dorso-dorsal, ventro-dorsal and ventral processing streams. Apraxia also occurs after right hemisphere stroke, but lesion correlates and underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. To clarify the role of the right hemisphere in apraxic deficits and the influence of neglect, we prospectively examined apraxia (imitation of meaningless postures and pantomime of tool use) and neglect in 138 acute right hemisphere stroke patients with first-ever ischemic stroke in t

INTRODUCTION: The neural correlates of impaired performance of gestures are currently unclear. Lesion studies showed variable involvement of the ventro-dorsal stream particularly left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in gesture performance on command. However, findings cannot be easily generalized as lesions may be biased by the architecture of vascular supply and involve brain areas beyond the critical region. The neuropsychiatric syndrome of schizophrenia shares apraxic-like errors and altered brain structure without macroanatomic lesions. Schizophrenia may therefore qualify as a model disorder

Nineteen people with Asperger syndrome (AS)/High-Functioning Autism (HFA) (ages 7-15) were tested on imitation of two types of meaningless gesture: hand postures and finger positions. The individuals with AS/HFA achieved lower scores in the imitation of both hand and finger positions relative to a matched neurotypical group. The between-group difference was primarily accounted for by performance on a test of visual motor integration, together with a hand imitation deficit which was specifically due to errors in body part orientation. Our findings implicate both visuomotor processes (Damasio an

The paper illustrates difficulties and insecurities of localizing cognitive functions with the example of pantomime of object use. Numerous studies have established a particular sensitivity of this task to left brain damage (LBD), but there is no agreement as to how components of its cognitive architecture are related to the laterality and intrahemispheric location of responsible lesions. Apraxia and asymbolia have been suspected to be crucial for explaining the vulnerability of pantomime to LBD, but analysis of correlations between impairments of pantomime, imitation of gestures, drawing from

Four experiments explored the hypothesis that temporal processes may be represented and controlled explicitly or implicitly. Tasks hypothesized to require explicit timing were duration discrimination, tapping, and intermittent circle drawing. In contrast, it was hypothesized that timing control during continuous circle drawing does not rely on an explicit temporal representation; rather, temporal control is an emergent property of other control processes (i.e., timing is controlled implicitly). Temporal consistency on the tapping and intermittent drawing tasks was related, and performance on b

Involuntary movements that resembled the shooting of a basketball and piano playing were observed after brain damage in a 13-year-old female and a 74-year-old female, respectively. The movements were characterized as involuntarily triggered movements that occurred in the presence and absence of exteroceptive stimuli, movements had been practiced repeatedly just before the occurrence of the brain damage, and that could be stopped on command. According to the MRI findings, the lesions extended into the pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA). The characteristics of the patients movements were dif

BACKGROUND: Selective imitation reflects children's ability to evaluate others' actions by considering goals, efficiency, and contextual constraints. Although previous research has emphasized the role of social cues in imitation, less is known about how model sociality influences selective imitation in young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
METHODS: Two studies examined selective imitation under social and nonsocial model conditions in children with ASD and typically developing (TD) children matched on cognitive developmental age. Chronological age was statistically controlled an

Humans copy other people without their conscious awareness, a behaviour known as automatic imitation. Although automatic imitation forms a key part of daily social interactions, we do not copy other people indiscriminately. Instead, we control imitative tendencies by prioritising some actions and inhibiting others. To date, neuroimaging studies investigating the control of automatic imitation have produced inconsistent findings. Some studies suggest that imitation control relies on a domain-specific neural circuit related to social cognition (the theory-of-mind network). In contrast, other stu

There is a large gap between the types of risky behavior we recommend to others and those we engage in ourselves. In this study, we hypothesized that a source of this gap is greater reliance on information about others' behavior when deciding whether to take a risk oneself than when deciding whether to recommend it to others. To test this hypothesis, we asked participants either to report their willingness to engage in a series of risky behaviors themselves; their willingness to recommend those behaviors to a loved one; or, how good of an idea it would be for either them or a loved one to enga

Mimicry and prosocial feelings are generally thought to be positively related. However, the conditions under which mimicry and liking are related largely remain unspecified. We advance this specification by examining the relationship between mimicry and liking more thoroughly. In two experiments, we manipulated an individual's a priori liking for another and investigated whether it influenced mimicry of that person. Our experiments demonstrate that in the presence of a reason to like a target, automatic mimicry is increased. However, mimicry did not decrease when disliking a target. These stud

The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) was developed as a means to teach children with autism and related developmental disabilities a rapidly acquired, self-initiating, functional communication system. Its theoretical roots combine principles from applied behavior analysis and guidelines established within the field of alternative and augmentative communication. This approach has several potential advantages relative to imitation-based strategies (both vocal and gestural) and symbol selection strategies. The system begins with the exchange of simple icons but rapidly builds "sentenc

Twenty-two anorgasmic women received 20 sessions of a multiple-technique behavioural therapy. The design included blind ratings by two independent assessors, multiple assessment instruments, and a waiting list control group. Treatment was significantly better than no treatment in terms of: (1) the percentage of patients experiencing orgasm during at least 50 per cent of sexual relations; (2) the percentage of women reporting satisfactory sexual relations at least 50 per cent of the time; (3) patients' ratings of positive reactions to various sexual behaviours; and (4) assessors' global clinica
