Neurodevelopmental screening for neonates less than 44 weeks gestation in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: With global improvements in neonatal survival, more small and sick newborns in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) are at increased risk of neurodevelopmental disability and delay. While there is increased recognition of the importance of early identification of neurodevelopmental differences and timely initiation of therapy, little is known about standardised neonatal neurodevelopmental screening tools in these settings. METHODS: We performed a systematic review to determine what standardised neurodevelopmental assessments had been used in LMICs for neonates before 4

Status of hospital-based blood transfusion services in low-income and middle-income countries: a cross-sectional international survey.

OBJECTIVES: Blood transfusion is life-saving for patients experiencing acute blood loss and severe anaemia. In low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), low blood donation rates and unavailability of whole blood and blood components (blood products) impairs timely blood transfusion. To fulfil patient-specific blood orders, a hospital blood transfusion service (HBTS) receives orders from a prescriber for blood transfusion, tests and prepares blood products for the patient. This study sought to describe the current state of LMIC HBTS. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey explored LMIC HBTS ac

Person-centred maternity care in low-income and middle-income countries: analysis of data from Kenya, Ghana, and India.

BACKGROUND: Several qualitative studies have described disrespectful, abusive, and neglectful treatment of women during facility-based childbirth, but few studies document the extent of person-centred maternity care (PCMC)-ie, responsive and respectful maternity care-in low-income and middle-income countries. In this Article, we present descriptive statistics on PCMC in four settings across three low-income and middle-income countries, and we examine key factors associated with PCMC in each setting. METHODS: We examined data from four cross-sectional surveys with 3625 women aged 15-49 years w

Artificial intelligence in surgical care within low-income and middle-income countries: a scoping review of development, validation, and deployment.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to expand access to high-quality surgical care in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet the extent and maturity of AI research in these settings remain unclear. We conducted a prospectively registered scoping review (osf.io/9PV6A) to synthesize primary evidence on the use of AI in LMIC surgical care. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for studies evaluating AI in surgical contexts within LMICs up to July 14, 2025. From 2602 records, 475 studies met inclusion criteria. Most were conducted in upper-middle-income countries

Supply-side and demand-side factors affecting allopathic primary care service delivery in low-income and middle-income country cities.

Most people in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) now live in cities, as opposed to rural areas where access to care and provider choice is limited. Urban health-care provision is organised on very different patterns to those of rural care. We synthesise global evidence to show that health-care clinics are plentiful and easily accessible in LMIC cities and that they are seldom overcrowded. The costs that patients incur when they seek care are highly variable and driven mostly by drugs and diagnostics. We show that citizens have agency, often bypassing cheaper facilities to access p

Estimated undertreatment of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections in eight low-income and middle-income countries: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative (CRGN) bacterial infections are an urgent health threat, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), where they are rarely detected and might not be treated appropriately given inadequate health system capacity. To understand this treatment gap, we estimated the total number of CRGN bacterial infections requiring an active agent and the number of individuals potentially initiated on appropriate treatment in eight large LMICs. METHODS: For eight selected countries (Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, India, Kenya, Mexico, Pakistan, and So

Unintentional Injuries Requiring Medical Attention in Low-Income and Middle-Income Countries: Evidence from Nationally Representative surveys in 12 Countries.

BACKGROUND: Despite a high burden of injuries in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), a lack of empirical evidence on mechanism, location, and distribution of unintentional injuries requiring medical attention (hereafter injuries) hinders informed health system policy development. METHODS: Using individual-level data from nationally representative surveys conducted in LMICs between 2014-2019, we describe the weighted annual prevalence of non-fatal injuries, their mechanisms, environments in which they occur, and characteristics of people injured, in individuals aged 15-64 years. Multimorbidity before, during and after pregnancy among women in low-income and middle-income countries: protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: The co-occurrence of multiple long-term conditions, that is, multimorbidity, is increasing globally and is associated with lower quality of life and increased risk of death. The risk and prevalence of multimorbidity are higher among women compared with men, but currently, evidence focusing on women's multiple long-term conditions during the perinatal period is limited. Existing evidence needs to be examined to determine the extent to which maternal multimorbidity or women's multiple health needs related to pregnancy have been addressed, especially for women living in low-income a

Assessment of heatwave impacts on child feeding practices across 36 low-income and middle-income countries: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Optimal feeding practices during the first 2 years of life are vital for child survival and growth. Current nutrition programmes in low-income and middle-income countries focus primarily on long-term dietary improvement, overlooking the acute challenges that heatwaves present to daily feeding practices in already nutritionally vulnerable populations. METHODS: By using the Demographic and Health Surveys data, we analysed data from the youngest child aged 6-23 months (including both infants aged 6-11 months and young children aged 12-23 months) in 293 137 households across 36 low-in

Uses of private health provider data for governance in low-income and middle-income countries: results from a scoping review.

UNLABELLED: This work grew from an interest in understanding how private data are used for health system governance in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). OBJECTIVE: We conducted a scoping review to understand how the public sector collects routine data from the private health sector and uses it for governance purposes. The private health sector was defined to include both formal and informal, for-profit or non-profit, actors delivering healthcare services. FINDINGS: We identified 4014 individual English language studies published between 2010 and 2021. We reviewed titles and abs

Beyond the income-achievement gap: The role of individual, family, and environmental factors in cognitive resilience among low-income youth.

BACKGROUND: Low socioeconomic status is associated with lower cognitive performance and long-term disparities in achievement and success. However, not all children from low-income backgrounds exhibit lower cognitive performance. Characterizing the factors that promote such resilience in youth from low-income households is of crucial importance. METHODS: We used baseline data from participants in the lowest tertile of income-to-needs in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study and machine learning to identify the factors that predict fluid and crystallized cognitive resilience among yo

Magnesium Sulfate Use in Pregnancy for Preeclampsia Prophylaxis and Fetal Neuroprotection: Regimens in High-Income and Low/Middle-Income Countries.

Magnesium sulfate is one of the most commonly used medications in obstetrics, most notably for the prevention of eclamptic seizures and fetal neuroprotection of the extremely preterm neonate. Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies have demonstrated a variety of IV and IM regimens are effective for these indications. Existing models and data can be used to tailor treatment regimens to increase coverage in poor resource areas, maximize efficacy and minimize toxicity for patients of different weights and renal function.
