Parent-Training with Kangaroo Care Impacts Infant Neurophysiological Development & Mother-Infant Neuroendocrine Activity.

A randomized control trial was conducted to investigate the effects of skin-to-skin, chest-to-chest contact (kangaroo care, KC) in mother-infant dyads on patterns of infant brain activity and associated mother-infant neurohormone releases. 33 mother-infant dyads participated during pregnancy (29-38 weeks gestation), at neonatal and 3-month periods. Overall, analyses indicated that: 1) infants in the KC group showed left frontal brain activation patterns (asymmetry and coherence) associated with KC training; 2) KC produced moderate to large increases in oxytocin levels; and 3) KC yielded modera

Infant-feeding practices and infant survival by familial wealth in London, 1752-1812.

Anecdotal evidence indicates that high-status women in England generally did not breastfeed their children in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Metropolitan families of varied social status also often sent their children out of London for wet-nursing. However, anecdotal sources and rural burial registers also suggest that these practices declined rapidly from the mid-eighteenth century, and were replaced by a culture of maternal breastfeeding in all social classes. These changes in infant-feeding practices have been argued to explain much of the dramatic improvement in infant mor

Maternal representations of the infant: associations with infant response to the still face.

Mothers' representations of their infants may influence early development of emotional self-regulation. This study examined the associations between characteristics of mothers' (N = 100) narratives about their 7-month-old infants, maternal depression, and their infants' affect regulation during the Still Face procedure. Findings showed that (1) mothers' representations were linked with individual differences in their infants' behavior across the Still Face procedure, (2) the association between mothers' representations and their infants' behavior was mediated by parenting behavior, and (3) mot

Perinatal factors influencing infant feeding practices at birth: the Bedouin Infant Feeding Study.

Bedouin Arab women delivering newborns at Soroka Medical Center, Israel, during 1 year were interviewed in hospital to determine the factors influencing infant feeding practices at birth. Eighty-six per cent breastfed, 11% breast and bottlefed, and 3% bottlefed at birth. Based on a multiple logistic regression analysis, the factors that significantly reduced the odds ratio (OR) of exclusive breastfeeding vs. breast and bottle feeding or bottle feeding at birth include: delivering during the high birth season (OR = 0.49); maternal recall of feeling unwell during pregnancy (OR = 0.59); deliverin

Maternal gaze to the infant face: Effects of infant age and facial configuration during mother-infant engagement in the first nine weeks.

BACKGROUND: Adult gaze plays an important role in early infant development, and infants are highly sensitive to its presence and direction. Little is known, however, about how adults look at infants while interacting with them. Using eye-tracking technology, this study investigated maternal gaze during naturalistic interactions, and how it was influenced by infant age, focusing on the transition from the first to the second month when social expressiveness emerges, and by infant facial configuration, focusing on the effect of cleft lip. METHODS: Thirty infants (10 with a cleft lip), and their

Positive maternal attitudes to following healthy infant feeding guidelines attenuate the associations between infant appetitive traits and both infant milk intake and weight.

Appetitive traits influence food intake and weight gain throughout the life-course. Here, we investigated whether maternal attitudes to following healthy infant feeding guidelines could modify this association. Baseline data from 544 mother-infant formula-feeding dyads recruited to the Baby Milk Trial were included in this observational, cross-sectional analysis. Infant appetitive traits (food responsiveness and satiety responsiveness), maternal attitudes to following healthy infant feeding guidelines (self-efficacy, outcome-expectancy, intentions) and infant milk intakes were reported by moth

Assessing infant motor development from afar: reflections on remote assessment of infant motor development.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated a global shift from face-to-face to digital healthcare, increasing demand for valid and reliable tools that can be administered remotely. The Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) is a widely used observational measure of infant gross motor development, yet evidence supporting its psychometric performance via telehealth remains limited. This study evaluated the validity of remote AIMS administration across three digital modalities compared with traditional in-person assessment. Findings demonstrated excellent agreement between remote and face-to-face scores, confi

Early infant prefrontal gray matter volume is associated with concurrent and future infant emotionality.

High levels of infant negative emotionality (NE) are associated with emotional and behavioral problems later in childhood. Identifying neural markers of high NE as well as low positive emotionality (PE) in infancy can provide neural markers to aid early identification of vulnerability, and inform interventions to help delay or even prevent psychiatric disorders before the manifestation of symptoms. Prefrontal cortical (PFC) subregions support the regulation of NE and PE, with each PFC subregion differentially specializing in distinct emotional regulation processes. Gray matter (GM) volume meas

Nutritional recommendations for the late-preterm infant and the preterm infant after hospital discharge.

Early nutritional support of preterm infants is critical to life-long health and well being. Numerous studies have demonstrated that preterm infants are at increased risk of mortality and morbidity, including disturbances in brain development. To date, much attention has focused on enhancing the nutritional support of very low and extremely low birth weight infants to improve survival and quality of life. In most countries, preterm infants are sent home before their expected date of term birth for economic or other reasons. It is debatable whether these newborns require special nutritional reg

The effects of maternal social phobia on mother-infant interactions and infant social responsiveness.

BACKGROUND: Social phobia aggregates in families. The genetic contribution to intergenerational transmission is modest, and parenting is considered important. Research on the effects of social phobia on parenting has been subject to problems of small sample size, heterogeneity of samples and lack of specificity of observational frameworks. We addressed these problems in the current study. METHODS: We assessed mothers with social phobia (N = 84) and control mothers (N = 89) at 10 weeks in face-to-face interactions with their infants, and during a social challenge, namely, engaging with a stran

Infant mortality statistics from the linked birth/infant death data set--1995 period data.

OBJECTIVES: This report presents infant mortality statistics from the linked birth/infant death data set (linked file)-1995 period data by a variety of maternal and infant characteristics. Trends in birthweight-specific infant mortality rates from 1985-95 are also discussed. METHODS: Descriptive tabulations of data from the linked file are presented. The data include infant deaths in 1995, which are linked to their corresponding birth certificates, whether the birth occurred in 1995 or 1994. The denominator used to compute infant mortality rates is the National Center for Health Statistics (N

Predictors of hospital postdischarge infant mortality: implications for high-risk infant follow-up efforts.

The association between maternal/infant characteristics and postdischarge mortality was determined for 19,573 infants from a single regional perinatal center. Postdischarge mortality was not associated with infant sex or ethnicity, mother's marital status, education, method of delivery, or income status. Mortality risk was statistically increased for infants who were neonatal intensive care unit graduates, of low birth weight, preterm, or small for gestational age. Infants who were either of low birth weight, neonatal intensive care unit graduates, or preterm represented 38% of hospital discha

Shared Pleasure in Early Mother-Infant Interactions Predicts Infant Attachment Security: A Brief Report.

Sharing emotions is a fundamental aspect of human interactions. Shared pleasure refers to moments where caregiver and infant engage in mutual smiling while making eye contact. This study examined shared pleasure in early mother-infant interactions as a predictor of infant attachment security. Associations between shared pleasure and maternal depressive symptoms were also investigated. The sample included 67 mother-infant dyads, of whom 22 mothers were diagnosed with postpartum depression. Shared pleasure was assessed through micro-coding of 3-min mother-infant interactions recorded in the labo

Associations between human milk oligosaccharides and infant growth in a Bangladeshi mother-infant cohort.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to estimate associations between human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) and infant growth (length-for-age (LAZ) and weight-for-length (WLZ) z-scores) at 12 months postnatal age. METHODS: In this secondary analysis of data from a maternal vitamin D trial in Dhaka, Bangladesh (N = 192), absolute concentrations of HMOs were measured in 13 ± 1 week(s) postpartum milk samples, infant anthropometric measurements were obtained soon after birth and at 12 months postpartum, and infant feeding was classified during 6 months postpartum. Associations between individual HMOs or HMO groups

Early infant diagnosis HIV-1 PCR cycle-threshold predicts infant viral load at birth.

BACKGROUND: HIV-1 viral load (VL) has been found to be an independent predictor for disease progression among untreated HIV-infected children. However, qualitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays are routinely used for early infant diagnosis (EID). OBJECTIVES: To predict HIV-1 VL at birth using qualitative EID real-time PCR cycle-threshold (Ct) values. STUDY DESIGN: This study was a secondary analysis of results from a cohort of intrauterine HIV-1 infected neonates. Birth timing and the mother-infant relationship predict variation in infant behavior and physiology.

The current study explored whether birth timing, known to influence the mother-infant relationship, also affected infant physiology up to 9 months later and infant behavior at weaning. Infant blood samples were collected at 5.75 and 8.75 months of age to assess functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis as well as the antibody response to a Cholera vaccination. Path analysis indicated infants born late in the birth season had less Relaxed relationships with their mothers. A less-Relaxed relationship was associated with greater infant Positive Engagement and Distress, which were neg
