[Determination of multi-veterinary drug residues in complementary foods for infants and young children by ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry].

Special attention must be paid to children and infants because health issues stemming from a poor immunologic system and low weight make them a vulnerable risk group. Complementary foods for infants and young children, which are a class of special dietary foods, are essential transitional foods for infants from lactation to adaptation to ordinary food. Some complementary foods for infants and young children are of animal origin such as fish, meat, and the liver, which may contain veterinary drug residues. Veterinary drugs are usually small-molecular-weight chemicals that are essential for trea

Fatty acid patterns early after premature birth, simultaneously analysed in mothers' food, breast milk and serum phospholipids of mothers and infants.

BACKGROUND: The supply of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids via the placenta is interrupted in premature infants, making them exclusively dependent on breast milk, which varies in fatty acid (FA) concentrations depending on the mother's diet. OBJECTIVE: To in a longitudinal study explore the relation between FA status in mothers and infants from an unselected cohort of prematures, not requiring intensive care. DESIGN: Breast milk and mothers' and infants' plasma phospholipid FA concentrations from birth to 44 weeks of gestational age were analysed and compared with mothers' food intake,

Food intake and growth of infants between six and twenty-six weeks of age on breast milk, cow's milk formula, or soy formula.

In 59 normal infants attending well-baby clinics, food consumption was registered until 26 and growth until 52 weeks of age. They were either breast-fed or formula-fed with a cow's milk product or a soy protein product. The average consumption of breastmilk was 746, 796, 722 ans 689 g/day at 6, 14, 22 and 26 weeks respectively. Bottle-fed infants received larger volumes, and at 6 and 14 weeks were the calculated total energy intakes significantly higher than in breast-fed infants. No differences were seen between the feeding groups with respect to length and the sum of four skin folds. The soy

Development, validation, and uncertainty measurement of HPLC-DAD method for determination of some free amino acids in infant formula and medical food products for inborn errors of metabolism.

This research aims at determining some free amino acids in amino acid-based infant formulas and amino acid-modified medical foods for inborn errors of metabolism to prove their quality. A method based on high-performance liquid chromatography and diode array detection was developed and validated. Then, overall uncertainty was estimated by the bottom-up approach. Applying the weighted least squares regression method suggested good linearity with coefficient of determinations ≥ 0.9960. The limits of detection were calculated between 0.01 and 0.28 μg/mL. The most repetitive recovery values were o

Rational Use of Elimination Diets in Infants and Toddlers: Navigating the Overlap Between Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) and Food Allergy-A Narrative Review.

Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) are the most common cause of gastrointestinal symptoms in infants and toddlers. The overall prevalence in the pediatric population aged 0-48 months is approximately one in four children. DGBI symptoms such as excessive crying, regurgitation, constipation or altered bowel movements can often mimic or overlap with food allergy (FA) manifestations, especially non-IgE-mediated allergy, thus posing a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. As a consequence, prolonged empiric elimination diets are often initiated in DGBI management despite limited evidence-bas

Eating speed in complementary fed infants: associations with energy intake, weight status, breastfeeding, baby food pouch use and baby-led weaning.

BACKGROUND: Although eating quickly may promote excess energy intake and is associated with unhealthy weight in children, little research has investigated eating speed in infants. OBJECTIVE: To describe relationships between eating speed and energy intake, weight status and feeding practices in infants aged 7-10 months. METHODS: Eating speed was assessed in 625 infants (First Foods New Zealand observational study) using three methods: (i) two 24-h diet recalls; (ii) the Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire 'slowness in eating' subscale; and (iii) one filmed eating occasion (n = 205). Tolerance induction through early feeding to prevent food allergy in infants with eczema (TEFFA): rationale, study design, and methods of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Up to 8% of all children in industrialized countries suffer from food allergies, whereas children with atopic eczema are affected considerably more frequently. In addition, the type and starting time of weaning foods seem to influence the development of food allergies. However, data from interventional studies on weaning are controversial. The aim of this randomized-controlled clinical trial is to investigate, whether an early introduction of hen's egg (HE), cow's milk (CM), peanut (PN), and hazelnut (HN) in children with atopic eczema can reduce the risk for developing food allerg

Length and weight of very low birth weight infants in Germany at 2 years of age: does it matter at what age they start complementary food?

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: We analysed at what age parents start complementary food in very low birth weight infants, determined risk factors for early introduction of complementary food (post-term age) and analysed whether the age at introduction of complementary food influences height or weight at 2 years of age. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Parents of premature infants born in 2009-2011 answered questionnaires regarding introduction of complementary food in the first year of life (N=2262) and were followed up at a post-term age of 2 years (N=981). Length and weight were compared with full-term infants fr

Combining a generic QuEChUP sample preparation with LC-Q-ToF-MS analysis for the large-scale screening of pesticides, veterinary drugs, mycotoxins and other chemicals in baby foods: a robust early-warning system to improve infant food monitoring.

To highlight chemical hazards in infant food, this study proposes a generic method combining QuEChUP extraction followed by LC-QTOF-MS analysis. The screening method was validated according to SANTE/11312/2021. A large part of the targeted contaminants had a limit of identification ≤0.01 mg.kg-1 (default MRL for pesticides). The method was then used on 123 baby foods. Targeted analysis enabled unequivocal identification of 54 contaminants, with notable occurrence of the flame-retardant TDCPP (∼27 %), the fungicides fluopyram (∼24 %), difenoconazole (∼23 %), fludioxonil and pyrimethanil (∼19 %)

Preventive lipid-based nutrient supplements given with complementary foods to infants and young children 6 to 23 months of age for health, nutrition, and developmental outcomes.

BACKGROUND: One nutritional intervention advocated to prevent malnutrition among children is lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS). LNS provide a range of vitamins and minerals, but unlike most other micronutrient supplements, LNS also provide energy, protein and essential fatty acids. Alternative recipes and formulations to LNS include fortified blended foods (FBF), which are foods fortified with vitamins and minerals, and micronutrient powders (MNP), which are a combination of vitamins and minerals, OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects and safety of preventive LNS given with complementary food

The Pattern of Complementary Foods in American Infants and Children Aged 0⁻5 Years Old-A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Data from the NHANES 2011⁻2014.

Proper nutrition early in life can influence children’s present and future health. While several authoritative sources provide eating/food recommendations, only a few studies have assessed whether these recommendations are followed. The goal of this paper was to examine food and nutrient intakes on any given day during infancy and early childhood among various ethnicities. Twenty-four-hour dietary recall data of 0⁻5 years-old children (n = 2431) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011⁻2014 was used to estimate intakes of nutrients and food groups and preva

[Bronchial obstruction and eczema unexpectedly common among Swedish infants. Interesting findings in an questionnaire study about food and life style habits of small children].

In our questionnaire study of 599 six-month-old and 512 twelve-month-old infants born in Western Sweden, we found that parents continued to adhere to outdated primary preventive recommendations against introducing eggs and fish early in the diet. Thirty-five percent of parents had not introduced eggs and 15% of the parents had not introduced fish by the time the infant was ten months old. We could also confirm a high prevalence of wheezing. At twelve months, 17.6% had had one or more episode of wheezing. Of the twelve-month-old infants, 4.1% had received or were being given inhaled corticoster

Identifying Predictors for the Acquisition of Tolerance to Cow's Milk Protein in Infants with Food Protein-Induced Allergic Proctocolitis (FPIAP): Multifactorial Analysis of Two Italian Cohorts.

Background/Objectives: Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) is a non-IgE-mediated gastrointestinal food allergy. Although tolerance to the culprit food is usually achieved within the first year of life, late acquisition occurs and remains poorly predictable. This study aimed to analyze clinical characteristics and explore factors that may potentially function as predictors of late tolerance acquisition to cow's milk (CM). Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study at two Italian pediatric clinics (2020-2024), including infants diagnosed with FPIAP. Clinical, dietary, and immu

Association Between the Number of US Food and Drug Administration-Warned Anesthetic Exposures and Full-Scale Intelligence Quotient at Age 3 Years in Very Preterm Infants.

OBJECTIVE: In 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that general anesthetics and sedative agents in children younger than 3 years may impair neurodevelopment. Very preterm infants could be especially vulnerable because of brain immaturity. We examined the association between the number of US FDA-warned anesthetic and sedative agents and full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) at age 3 years in infants born < 29 weeks' gestational age (GA). STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective study, all infants born (< 29 weeks' gestation) between January 2006 and December 2012 were evaluated
