Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) causes approximately 4000 deaths/y and significant morbidity among U.S.-born preterm infants alone. Various combinations of inadequate tissue oxygenation, bacterial overgrowth, and enteral feeding with immaturity may cause the initial damage to intestinal mucosa that culminates in necrosis. Presently, there is not a way to predict the onset of the disease or to prevent its occurrence. As part of risk-benefit assessment, we compared disease in hospitalized preterm infants fed a commercial (control) preterm formula or an experimental formula with egg phospholipids

In 45 mothers of full term infants the level of thyroxine (T4) in serum (45 samples) and unskimmed milk (92 samples) was estimated with the aid of competitive protein binding analysis. On the 3rd day after delivery the T4 level in serum was found to be 11.1 +/- 0.4 mug/100 ml, while that in milk was 1.3 +/- 0.3 mug/100 ml. During following days of lactation the T4 concentration in sera decreased. In contrast, however, a gradual increase of the T4 content in milk was observed. The serum and milk levels equalized during the third week post partum (7.3 +/- 1.3 and 7.6 +/- 1.4 mu6/100 ml, respecti

BACKGROUND: Although preterm infants often experience desaturation or bradycardia during oral feeding, specific guidelines for its management are lacking.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a commercial thickened formula (TF) on oxygen saturation and heart rate stabilization during oral feeding in preterm infants.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 122 infants born at a median (interquartile range [IQR]) 31+6 weeks (29+4 -34+6 weeks) of gestation weighing 1,725 g (1,353-2,620 g) and fed commercial cornstarch-containing TF due to feeding-associated desaturation or

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect and safety of extensively hydrolyzed formula (EHF) in preterm infants.
METHODS: A total of 692 preterm infants between January 2007 and December 2016 were enrolled as subjects. According to the feeding pattern, they were divided into EHF group (327 infants) and standard preterm formula (SPF) group (365 infants). A retrospective analysis was performed for their clinical data during hospitalization, including the incidence of feeding intolerance, time to establish full enteral feeding, time to first excretion of meconium, time to complete excretion of meconi

OBJECTIVE: To determine range of bottle sizes used and examine the relationship between bottle size and total daily consumption of infant formula.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of baseline data collected as part of Greenlight, a cluster randomized trial to prevent childhood obesity at 4 pediatric resident clinics. The Greenlight study included healthy, term infants. For our analysis, parents of exclusively formula-fed infants reported volume per feed, number of feeds per day, and bottle size, which was dichotomized into small (<6 oz) or large (≥6 oz). We identified determinants of bottle

Residue levels of seven organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), widely used as dairy cattle ectoparasiticides or in crops used for animal feed, were determined in raw milk and infant formulas. A total of 312 samples were collected (70 from infant formulas and 242 from raw milk) biweekly during a 24-month period. Pesticides were extracted by means of a solid phase system into acetone. An extract aliquot of acetone was injected into a gas chromatograph (GC) with a nitrogen-phosphorus detector. Recoveries of pesticides spiked in milk samples were 62.2 - 97.2 %. The frequency of total samples containi

Osteopontin (OPN) is a multifunctional bioactive protein that is implicated in numerous biological processes such as bone remodeling, inhibition of ectopic calcification, and cellular adhesion and migration, as well as several immune functions. Osteopontin has cytokine-like properties and is a key factor in the initiation of T helper 1 immune responses. Osteopontin is present in most tissues and body fluids, with the highest concentrations being found in milk. In the present study, ELISA for human and bovine milk OPN were developed and OPN concentration in human breast milk, bovine milk, and i

Human milk contains immunologically active substances potentially capable of altering infant immune response. As part of the prospective Children's Respiratory Study, we assessed whether the association between maternal allergic status and allergic status of the child was altered by breast-feeding. Skin-prick tests for 7 common allergens were administered to 702 6-year-old children and their mothers. The percentage of children sensitized to specific allergens, maternal skin test response to that allergen, and whether or not the child was ever breast-fed was determined. Findings indicated that

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a low-lactose formula (LLF, <5% lactose) would ameliorate feeding intolerance in premature infants.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, controlled trial involving 306 infants <36 weeks' gestation and weighing <1800 g who received either lactose-containing formula (LCF) 24 kcal/oz or a specially prepared LLF, which was comparable to the LCF except for the functional replacement of lactose with maltose. We examined outcome variables of feeding intolerance and cases of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and suspected NEC.
RESULTS: One hundred forty-nine infants w

The differences between breast milk and infant formulas have been a popular subject of many recent studies. Most concern the chemical and biological characteristics of breast milk and infant formulas, but little work has been done about hemodynamic changes in the splanchnic circulation. In term neonates (n = 22) we evaluated the effect of breast milk, adapted cow's milk formula, and nucleotide supplemented cow's milk formula on intestinal blood flow. To determine the blood flow velocity and estimate volume flow, pulsed Doppler ultrasound of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) was performed pr

Lactose intolerance due to lactase deficiency often follows acute gastroenteritis. In such situations, a lactose-free formula may be indicated for preterm infants. Therefore, the effect of addition of lactase on the lactose content and osmolality of preterm and term infant formulas was studied. Lactose content of formulas at room temperature was decreased by approximately 50% 1 hour after addition of lactase. Concentration of lactose was reduced by 70% or more after 2 hours in all formulas. Because of the higher initial lactose concentration in term formulas, it took 24 hours to reach the same

Infant milk formula (IMF) is designed to support infants during a highly sensitive stage of development, yet its trace-level bioactive composition remains less explored than its nutritional profile. Among these minor constituents, hormones are of particular interest because they link infant nutrition with endocrine regulation, food safety, and analytical chemistry. Hormones in IMF may originate naturally from milk-derived ingredients, result from veterinary practices, or occur as hormone-like endocrine-active residues. However, their determination is challenging due to their low concentrations

Infant formula (IF) is a vital nutritional source for infants. However, its sensory quality deteriorates during prolonged storage, impacting consumer acceptance. This study investigated the stage-specific sensory deterioration mechanisms and the predictive modeling of IFs during storage by integrating flavoromics, fatty acid dynamics, and machine learning. Quantitative descriptive analysis identified six key attributes driving quality loss, with one-stage IF showing the earliest and most pronounced decline. Volatile compound profiling revealed aldehydes (hexanal, octanal) and ketones as domina

BACKGROUND: Milk carotenoids may support preterm infant health and neurodevelopment. Infants fed human milk often have higher blood and tissue carotenoid concentrations than infants fed carotenoid-containing infant formula (IF). Donor human milk (DHM) is a supplement to mother's own milk, used to support preterm infant nutrition.
OBJECTIVES: We tested whether tissue and plasma β-carotene concentrations would be higher in preterm pigs fed pasteurized DHM versus premature IF.
METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of samples collected from a study of the effects of enteral diet composition on n

In 1978 and 1979 two infant formulas, Neo-Mull-Soy and Cho-Free, were found to be deficient in chloride. The Centers for Disease Control received reports that hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis (HMA) had developed in 141 children as a result of exposure to these formulas. Thirty-five of these children were examined at 9 and 10 years of age and compared with a group of 32 children who were exposed to the chloride-deficient formulas but were not reported to experience HMA and a group of 61 children who received chloride-sufficient soy formulas in infancy. The control children were matched to the

This study assessed the mineral adequacy of mothers' own milk, term milk, and preterm formula for premature neonates, evaluated toxic element contents using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry, and audited formula labels. Preterm and term milk were inadequate in meeting European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition-modeled mineral requirements for preterm infants at an assumed enteral intake of 165 mL/kg/d, particularly for calcium, chromium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, sodium, and selenium. Preterm formula met or even exceeded the requirements

Ensuring optimal infant nutrition is crucial for the health and development of children. Many infants aged 0-6 months are fed with infant formula rather than breast milk. Research on cancer cell lines and animal models is limited to examining the nutrition effects of formula and breast milk, as it does not comprehensively consider absorption, metabolism, and the health and social determinants of the infant and its physiology. Our study utilized small intestine organoids induced from human embryo stem cell (ESC) to compare the nutritional effects of breast milk from five donors during their pos

OBJECTIVE: To determine if lactose-free formula, compared to lactose-containing formula, decreases the cumulative morphine dose required to treat neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).
STUDY DESIGN: In a double-blind clinical trial, we randomized 74 infants (36-42 weeks gestation) at risk for developing NAS due to in-utero exposure to opioids to receive either lactose-free (Similac Sensitive®) or lactose-containing (Similac Advance®) infant formula. The primary outcome measure was the cumulative dose of morphine used for the treatment of NAS during the first 14 days of life.
RESULTS: Data on 69

Mode of delivery and lactation are among the earliest factors influencing gut microbiota composition and potentially MS risk, but their contribution to MS susceptibility has been controversial. We investigated whether these factors could influence age at MS onset (AAO) on 2055 RRMS patients (mean age 28.4 years). Patients born by means of a caesarean section (10.9%) had an earlier AAO than those born through natural delivery (-5.2 years, p < 0.001). Patients fed with infant formula had an earlier AAO compared to patients breastfed, particularly considering those breastfed for at least 6 months
