Google search volume trends for cancer screening terms during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to delays in cancer diagnosis, in part due to postponement of cancer screening. We used Google Trends data to assess public attention to cancer screening during the first peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Search volume for terms related to established cancer screening tests ("colonoscopy," "mammogram," "lung cancer screening," and "pap smear") showed a marked decrease of up to 76% compared to the pre-pandemic period, a significantly greater drop than for search volume for terms denoting common chronic diseases. Maintaining awareness of cancer screening during future

Health Information Behavior in Parents of Children With Congenital Heart Disease in China: Qualitative Study Through the Lens of Chinese Culture.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) serve as primary caregivers and play a central role in decisions regarding their children's health care, development, and overall well-being. Their health information behavior directly influences the care decisions and outcomes of their children. In China, the online health information environment is vast but varies in quality, which places a significant information-seeking burden on them in the digital age. Moreover, Chinese cultural backgrounds shape parents' views, perspectives, and practices related to health information.

Hyperdiagnosis: Nosophobia and the Rise of Health Anxiety among Medical Students in the Age of Social Media and Artificial Intelligence.

Widespread availability of health-related information via social media and artificial intelligence tools is contributing to an emerging pattern of hyperdiagnosis. Individuals, particularly medical students, develop heightened health anxiety and excessive fear of illness despite the absence of clinical disease. Nosophobia, which is a part of Medical Student Syndrome, is worsened by digital symptom-checking and constant exposure to disease content on social media.

Seasonal variation in the internet searches for gout: an ecological study.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: While few studies with various types of outcomes and methodology have investigated the seasonality of gout, no internet data has been used in any study. This novel methodology may complement and extend the previous traditional data sources and has increasingly been used in investigating the seasonality of health conditions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to utilize the Google Trends data to test whether there is a seasonal variation in the internet searches for gout on a population basis. METHODS: In this observational ecological study, the Google Trends wa

Understanding Drivers and Effects of Real-Time Information Seeking on Meningitis Knowledge and Attitudes.

This study took a lab-based approach to test both the drivers and effects of information seeking, in the context of meningitis. Participants (N = 107) answered a survey where they indicated their actual knowledge, perceived knowledge insufficiency (i.e. the gap between perceived and desired knowledge), and attitudes regarding meningitis. They were then given the opportunity to seek information online, and those who sought information (n = 83) answered a post-seeking survey. The results showed that perceived knowledge insufficiency and attitudes significantly predicted information seeking inten

The Information Void in Asymptomatic Chronic Disease: A Digital Health Framework for Understanding Social Media Health Information Seeking in Young Adults.

Nearly 1 in 4 young adults has a chronic condition, yet many feel well despite their diagnosis. Asymptomatic conditions such as prediabetes and hypertension create a unique vulnerability to digital health misinformation, particularly on platforms where inaccurate content is prevalent. Conventional clinical responses, which often just warn patients about online misinformation, fail to address the underlying drivers of this behavior. This viewpoint proposes a novel disease characteristic-based vulnerability framework to understand this challenge, grounded in established behavioral science theori

Knowledge-seeking and knowledge sharing of health services across social networks and communities: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Lay people's knowledge influences healthcare service utilisation, but the literature on people's knowledge-seeking and sharing about different healthcare services across social networks is patchy and not well integrated. This scoping review was undertaken to map how different studies report healthcare service -related (healthcare) knowledge-seeking or sharing in social circles and to identify evidence gaps for further research. METHOD: Levac's enhanced scoping review framework was adapted to develop a comprehensive electronic search strategy. Four electronic databases-Medline, W

Behavioral predictors associated with HIV screening needs in gay Korean men during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the pandemic, the capacity of medical resources focused on testing, diagnosing and treating COVID-19 has severely limited public access to health care. In particular, HIV screening, for which homosexual males in Korea received free and anonymous testing at public health centers, was completely halted. This study investigated behavioral predictors related to the HIV screening needs of Korean male homosexuals during the pandemic. Data were collected by conducting a web survey targeting members of the largest homosexual portal site in Korea with support from the National Research Foundatio

Seeking or contributing? Evidence of knowledge sharing behaviours in promoting patients' perceived value of online health communities.

BACKGROUND: Health knowledge, as an important resource of online health communities (OHCs), attracts users to engage in OHCs and improve the traffics within OHCs, thereby promoting the development of OHCs. Seeking and contributing health knowledge are basic activities in OHCs and are helpful for users to solve their health-related problems, improve their health conditions and thus influence their evaluation of OHCs (ie perceived value of OHCs). However, how do patients' health knowledge seeking and health knowledge contributing behaviours together with other factors influence their perceived v

The impact of ultraviolet radiation on sunburn-related search activity.

We establish a strong, positive relationship between the Ultraviolet Index and Google search engine activity for sunburn-related terms in the United States. Using the Google Trends utility and data available from the National Weather service, we combine data from a twelve-year period to produce panel data for each state. We fit a time-series regression model of search activity and perform statistical tests on the resulting parameter estimates. This study lays the groundwork for using search-related data to assess the prevalence of, and attitudes about sunburn. By tracking the frequency of sear
