[Burden of herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia: Incidence, proportion, and associated costs in the French population aged 50 or over].

BACKGROUND: Despite the perspective of vaccination against herpes zoster, there are few recent data available on the incidence of this disease, the proportion of postherpetic neuralgia cases, and associated disease management costs. This study was performed to evaluate these parameters in a representative sample of French physicians. METHODS: It was a retrospective, declarative study conducted from the medical files of patients who presented with herpes zoster and consulted in 2005, based on a random sample of GPs, dermatologists, neurologists, and physicians in pain clinics, weighted by demo

Financial distress among U.S. adults with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease history: A nationally representative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases represent major causes of morbidity, mortality, and economic burden in the United States. Growing evidence demonstrates high rates of financial distress, defined as the negative impact of medical costs on a person's financial wellbeing, among individuals with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. This study aimed to examine the association between cardiovascular/cerebrovascular disease history and financial distress among U.S. adults and to identify factors associated with financial distress in this high-risk population. METHODS:

Rebuilding Beta-Cell Function: Advances In Replacement, Preservation And Regeneration.

Since the life-saving discovery of insulin in 1921, multiple approaches have been developed to improve long-term outcomes in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). While technological advance such as closed-loop insulin delivery systems are now well known to most endocrinologists, biological approaches to restore beta-cell mass remain less widely recognized but are rapidly evolving. Since 2021, islet transplantation has been covered by the French national health insurance system. Nevertheless, islet allotransplantation requires complex isolation procedures from brain-dead donors, limiting access

Survival by Race and Ethnicity in Children and Adolescents/Young Adults With Relapsed/Refractory Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Pooled Analysis of Children's Oncology Group Trials.

PURPOSE: Despite 5-year survival rates of over 90% among children and adolescents/young adults (CAYAs) with classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL), 15%-20% relapse after frontline therapy. Prior analysis of frontline Children's Oncology Group (COG) clinical trials demonstrated that, despite similar rates of relapse, non-Hispanic Black (NHB) and Hispanic (vs. non-Hispanic White [NHW]) patients experienced higher post-relapse mortality. It is unknown whether post-relapse disparities persist when second-line treatment is delivered in a cooperative group trial setting. We examined overall survival (OS) by

Development and validation of a risk prediction model for abdominal aortic aneurysm: a nationwide population-based cohort study.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is characterized by irreversible localized dilatation of the abdominal aorta. It poses a significant health risk. As AAA size tends to increase over time, there is a heightened risk of rupture, resulting in a substantially high mortality rate. Although AAA screening programs targeting specific demographics are available, there is room for improvement in terms of inclusivity and cost-effectiveness. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for AAA occurrence utilizing seven years of data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database (NHIS). This

Molecular Profiling and the Impact of Treatment on Outcomes in Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Type I and II.

PURPOSE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an uncommon salivary gland cancer with no approved therapies available to treat advanced, incurable disease. Recent molecular profiling efforts have identified two important subtypes: the more aggressive ACC-I is characterized by Notch pathway alterations and MYC amplification whereas ACC-II demonstrates a more indolent phenotype and TP63 overexpression. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: This retrospective observational cohort study involved de-identified samples from 438 patients with ACC with tumor samples sent for commercially-available molecular profiling (Ca

Do dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) inhibitors cause heart failure?

PURPOSE: Although recent reports suggest an association between saxagliptin and an increased risk of admissions for heart failure, it is not clear whether dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) inhibition contributes to heart failure in high-risk patients. The purpose of this research is to understand heart failure risk among high-risk patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: This is a systematic review of data published in full papers and abstract form using the terms DPP-IV inhibitors and heart failure published since October 2013. Data from insurance and hospital databases were combined with thos

Factors Associated with Rehabilitation Service Use after Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of long-term functional impairment in children. Rehabilitation services are critical for recovery, yet their use following pediatric TBI is highly variable, potentially contributing to heterogeneity in outcomes. This systematic review and meta-analysis, guided by the Andersen Behavioral Model of Health Services Use, aimed to characterize variability in rehabilitation service use and identify associated factors. Following a registered protocol, we searched Medline, PsycINFO, and Embase (last update June 2025) for observational studies involving pa

Availability and Use of Social Determinants of Health Data in Alliance Gastrointestinal Cancer Clinical Trials.

PURPOSE: Social determinants of health (SDOH) shape cancer treatment access, adherence, and outcomes, yet their collection and use within National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) studies remain poorly defined. This study examined how demographic and SDOH-related variables were historically collected and published to identify gaps that constrain the study of social context within NCTN trials. METHODS: Participant-level data from completed phase III trials for gastrointestinal (GI) cancers conducted by the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology (Alliance) or its legacy groups from 1999 to 2018

Polyarginine Peptide R11-Actin Interaction Induces a Domino Effect on Cytoskeleton Remodeling to Suppress Bladder Cancer Metastasis.

BACKGROUND: While socioeconomic status (SES) indicators such as educational attainment and employment are among the major drivers of health and illness, the health returns of SES indicators may differ across racial groups. Built on Marginalization related Diminished Returns framework (MDRs) that refers to weaker health effects of SES indicators for marginalized and minoritized groups than non-Hispanic White people, we conducted this study with two aims: First to test the association between educational attainment and employment with cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), and second, to test racial v

Issues associated with malaria self-medication in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic literature review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a leading cause of death in sub-Saharan Africa, which is home to more than 90% of both cases and deaths globally. Self-medication with antimalarials is a common practice in the region, mainly due to high malaria endemicity, poverty, and difficulty in accessing services in formal settings. Malaria self-medication is implicated in the rising trend of antimalarial drug resistance which threatens decades of gains made in controlling the disease. Previous studies have somewhat itemised the reasons for malaria self-medication and the factors driving it but have not been able t
