[Results of intelligence investigations in civil pilots with atherosclerotic changes in cerebral vessels].

Intelligence was evaluated in 73 normal civil pilots (control) and 70 with atherosclerotic cerebral vessels including 23 men with atheromas. Intelligence was evaluated with the use of computerized EPI (Gorbov's modification). Pilots with cerebral atherosclerosis tended to slightly decrease mean IQ values in comparison with the normal; IQ values remained high enough to attest professional efficiency. Atheromas did not impact results of the numerical (IQ2) and verbal (IQ3) tests. Hemodynamically negligible stable atheromas did not disturb cognitive functions of the pilots and, therefore, they we

Response initiation and inhibition and the relationship with fluid intelligence across the adult lifespan.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive processes associated with frontal lobe functioning are often termed "executive functions." Two such processes are initiation and inhibition or the starting and stopping of responses. It has recently been claimed dysfunction of executive abilities can be explained by a single measure of fluid intelligence. Here, we test this claim, specifically for the executive abilities of response initiation and inhibition, across the healthy lifespan. METHOD: In a cohort of 336 healthy adults (18-89 years), initiation and inhibition were assessed with the Hayling test, Stroop test, an

The effects of lead exposure on urban children: the Institute of Child Health/Southampton Study.

A study of the associations between level of tooth lead, behaviour, intelligence and a variety of other psychological skills was carried out in the child population aged six to seven years in three London boroughs. Tooth lead was estimated from the chemical analysis of shed teeth donated by children. 2663 (62.4 per cent) of the eligible children donated teeth. A study of the total population was carried out to see if those who donated teeth were representative of that population. There were small but consistent and statistically significant differences--tooth-givers being of slightly higher in

Emotional Intelligence in Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum.

People with agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) with normal general intelligence have deficits in complex cognitive processing, as well as in social cognition. It is uncertain the extent to which impoverished processing of emotions may contribute to social processing deficiencies. We used the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test to clarify the nature of emotional intelligence in 16 adults with AgCC. As hypothesized, persons with AgCC exhibited greater disparities from norms on tests involving more socially complex aspects of emotions. The AgCC group did not differ from norms on

Isolated frontopolar cortex lesion: a case study.

BACKGROUND: The frontopolar cortex has been proposed to mediate prospective memory functioning, multitasking, relational integration, processing of internal states, and self-referential evaluation. These theories are based primarily on functional activation studies. The few lesion models reported have not been restricted to the frontopolar cortex. AIM: We used neuropsychological tests and neuroimaging to study an otherwise healthy woman with an isolated hemorrhagic infarct in the frontopolar cortex. METHODS: In addition to a standard stroke work-up, the patient had cognitive psychometric tes

Relationship between intelligence quotient measures and computerized neurocognitive performance in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Intelligence quotient (IQ) testing is standard for evaluating cognitive abilities in genomic studies but requires professional expertise in administration and interpretation, and IQ scores do not translate into insights on implicated brain systems that can link genes to behavior. Individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) often undergo IQ testing to address special needs, but access to testing in resource-limited settings is challenging. The brief Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery (CNB) provides measures of cognitive abilities related to brain systems and can screen for cogn

Neuropsychological findings in childhood narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy with cataplexy is a severely disabling disorder very often arising in childhood. Data on neuropsychological impairment in children are scant. We administered standardized neuropsychological tests to 13 children with narcolepsy with cataplexy. Overall, our patients displayed multiple patterns of cognitive and behavioral dysfunction, and often academic failure (7 cases out of 13). All children had a normal full intelligence quotient (IQ), but 3 patients presented a significantly higher and 2 a significantly lower Verbal IQ compared to Performance IQ, respectively. Mean sleep latency w

Interpreting the WISC-R subtest scores of reading impaired children--a structural approach.

The problem of characterising more specifically the cognitive requirements involved in subtests from standardised measures of intelligence represents a main problem in the research on exceptional populations. A new way of classifying tests of mental abilities is presented. Rather than focusing on the content of a given test, the present classification system focuses on their structures. The classification system is applied to the WISC-R (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children--Revised, Wechsler, 1974). It will be used to interpret the IQ-profiles of a clinically defined sample of reading imp
