[The patient's intolerance of dentures from the internal medicine veiwpoint].

Similar complaints these found in cases of denture incompatibility (itching of palate and tongue, dry mouth, sores in the mouth as well as other unpleasant sensations) may be observed in many disorders of internal medicine. Therefore considerable difficulties are often involved in the differential diagnostic considerations and delimination of such complaints.

Inappropriate Use of Indwelling Urinary Catheters in Internal Medicine Patients.

BACKGROUND: Indwelling catheters are commonly used in non-intensive care internal medicine patients. They are associated with significant side effects. OBJECTIVES: To determine the proportion of warranted indwelling catheters and factors associated with inappropriate use. METHODS: We included consecutive patients hospitalized in three internal medicine departments from 2020 to 2021. We determined the proportion of urinary catheters inserted in the emergency department that were retained inappropriately for monitoring urine outputs. The area under the curve (AUC) was used to determine the abi

Opioid-induced constipation in internal medicine: recognition and management pathways.

Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) remains one of the most frequent and distressing gastrointestinal side effects encountered by patients on chronic opioid therapy. Despite the high prevalence, OIC is frequently underdiagnosed and inadequately managed, with critical effects on the quality of life of patients. Aim of this review is to promote the awareness about OIC in the context of internal medicine. We examined the statement EnhanCing Healthcare Outcomes in Opioid-Induced Constipation (ECHO OIC) by European experts to streamline the diagnosis and management of OIC in clinical practice. Such g

Deciphering cytopenias in internal medicine: a single-center observational study.

Cytopenia is a common finding in patients admitted to internal medicine wards and the clinical workup may be long and time-consuming. In this single-center observational study, we analyzed a series of 151 inpatients who received hematologist referral due to cytopenia observed during hospital admission. Patients were mainly elderly (median 71 years, 15-96) and 87% had at least one comorbidity. Anemia was the most common cytopenia (91%), followed by thrombocytopenia (51%), and neutropenia (22%); 73 (48%) patients had a bicytopenia and 5 (3%) pancytopenia. Cytopenias were mainly severe, 66% of ca

[Practical use of digital health applications (DiGA) in internal medicine].

Since 2020 physicians can prescribe digital health applications (DiGA), also colloquially known as apps on prescription, which are reimbursed by the statutory health insurance when they are approved by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) and are included in the DiGA Ordinance. Currently, there is one approved DiGA (indication obesity) for internal medicine. There are many questions on the practical use of the DiGA, ranging from the prescription, the effectiveness, the complexities and reimbursement as well as the liability risks. The DiGA are innovative new means, which

The Future of Medical Abortion Care: an Internal Medicine Obligation.

Abortion care is an essential part of women's reproductive health. Due to increasing state restrictions on abortion care and the United States Supreme Court decision to overturn the landmark case of Roe v. Wade, it is becoming ever more important to increase medical abortion access for all women. Internal Medicine (IM) physicians are able to provide reproductive healthcare including medical abortions. As women in over 20 states are at risk of not having any access to abortion, it is our obligation as IM physicians to provide this care and help curb the effects of these restrictive laws and the

Pathocentric Health Care and a Minimal Internal Morality of Medicine.

Christopher Boorse is very skeptical of there being a pathocentric internal morality of medicine. Boorse argues that doctors have always engaged in activities other than healing, and so no internal morality of medicine can provide objections to euthanasia, contraception, sterilization, and other practices not aimed at fighting pathologies. Objections to these activities have to come from outside of medicine. I first argue that Boorse fails to appreciate that such widespread practices are compatible with medicine being essentially pathocentric. Then I contend that the pathocentric essence, prop

Catatonia as an internal medicine disease: infrequent or still underdiagnosed?

Catatonia is a motor and behavioural syndrome with multiple psychiatric, general medical and neurological aetiologies that might be simultaneously present. B12 deficiency is a rare, treatable cause of catatonia, not always easy to rule out. The authors present a case of a woman with catatonia associated with severe cyanocobalamin deficiency, admitted to an internal medicine ward. The benign course was related to an adequate and early diagnosis.
