A formative evaluation of a web-based intervention for women with a sexual assault history and heavy alcohol use.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual assault (SA) among college women is widespread and is associated with negative consequences including heavy drinking. However, women with SA histories are rarely the target of alcohol interventions, and existing alcohol interventions do not address the distal factors that contribute to heavy drinking in this group, such as emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The goal of this study was to evaluate a newly developed web-based alcohol intervention targeting college women with SA histories. METHOD: Heavy-drinking college women with SA histories (N = 21) reviewed a series

Therapeutic strategies for social anxiety disorder: where are we now?

Introduction: Classical well-established treatments of social anxiety disorder (SAD) are now complemented by more recent therapeutic strategies. This review aims to summarize available therapies for SAD and discuss recent evidence-based findings on the management of this disorder.Areas covered: Recent guidelines recommend psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and pharmacotherapy, as first-line treatments of patients with SAD, without a clear superiority of one option over the other. CBT includes classical approaches such as in vivo exposure to social situations and co

Increasing the effectiveness of psychotherapy in routine care through transdiagnostic online modules? Randomized controlled trial investigating blended care.

OBJECTIVE: Blended care (BC), the integration of Internet-based interventions into psychotherapy (PT), is thought of as a promising approach to enhance PT's effectiveness and efficiency. This randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the effectiveness as well as the implementation and usage of BC with transdiagnostic online modules compared to PT in routine care in Germany. Routine outpatient PT is delivered by licensed psychotherapists across different therapeutic orientations (cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic, systemic), with variable treatment lengths and procedures. The effectiveness of web-based grief intervention for adults who lost a loved one: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Many bereaved individuals suffer from intense grief, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. To prevent these conditions from worsening, web-based grief interventions have emerged as a promising solution for providing accessible, flexible, and anonymous support to bereaved individuals. However, two previous meta-analyses focused only on the post-intervention effects of web-based grief interventions on grief, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression in bereavement individuals, relying on a small number of studies published before 2021. Therefore, after includin

Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioural Treatments for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common mental health condition characterized by distressing, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours (compulsions) aimed at reducing anxiety. Internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) has emerged as an effective treatment modality for various mental health disorders. This meta-analysis evaluates the efficacy of guided self-help ICBT (GSH ICBT) and unguided self-help ICBT (SH ICBT) against active and passive control conditions in adults with OCD. A comprehensive systematic literature search yielded 12 randomized controlled tri

Patient Perspectives on Blended Internet-Based and Face-to-Face Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Alcohol Use Disorder: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Harmful alcohol consumption has been identified as a major contributor to disease, mortality, and social harm, accounting for 5.3% of worldwide deaths annually. In Denmark, an estimated 150,000 people suffer from alcohol use disorder (AUD), but a low proportion seek treatment due to person- and treatment-related barriers. Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) has shown positive effects on the treatment gap, with patients reporting benefits such as increased knowledge and flexibility. However, there is a lack of research on blended cognitive behavioral therapy (bCBT), w

Study protocol for an online randomised controlled trial among non-treatment seeking problem gamblers: training inhibition in online problem gambling (TRAIN-online) trial.

INTRODUCTION: Development of fully internet-based programs could provide a new avenue to improve access to healthcare for problem gamblers. In this project, we aim to assess the efficacy of a web-based cognitive intervention targeting inhibitory control among problem gamblers, using a randomised controlled design. As impaired inhibitory control is involved in self-regulation difficulties in behavioural addictions, it represents a particularly relevant cognitive process to target for an online psychological intervention. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This will be a single-blinded, randomised, comparat

The Effects of a Pain Psychology and Neuroscience Self-Evaluation Internet Intervention: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Many patients' chronic musculoskeletal pain is strongly influenced by central nervous system processes such as sensitization or amplification. Education about pain neuroscience can change patients' beliefs but has less consistent effects on pain outcomes. Patients may have greater clinical benefits if the educational intervention is personalized, and they evaluate various psychosocial risk factors with respect to their pain. We developed and tested a brief, internet-based Pain Psychology and Neuroscience (PPN) self-evaluation intervention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From a patient reg

Developing and evaluating the effectiveness of a web-based application to improve the mental health of infertile women: a multi-phase study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Infertility is a chronic bio-psycho-social condition associated with substantial psychological distress, particularly among women. High rates of anxiety, depression, reduced quality of life, low self-efficacy, and impaired resilience have been widely reported, while access to psychological support remains limited due to financial, social, and stigma-related barriers. Web-based mental health interventions offer a promising, accessible, and cost-effective approach to address these unmet needs. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a user-centered, web-based p

An Economic Evaluation of a Web-Based Management Support System for Children With Urinary Incontinence: The eADVICE Trial.

PURPOSE: Children who require specialist outpatient care typically wait substantial periods during which their condition may progress, making treatment more difficult and costly. Timely and effective therapy during this period may reduce the need for lengthy specialist care. This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of an individualized, evidence-informed, web-based program for children with urinary incontinence awaiting a specialist appointment (Electronic Advice and Diagnosis Via the Internet following Computerized Evaluation [eADVICE]) compared to usual care. eADVICE was supervised by a p

Guided, internet-based, rumination-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (i-RFCBT) versus a no-intervention control to prevent depression in high-ruminating young adults, along with an adjunct assessment of the feasibility of unguided i-RFCBT, in the REducing Stress and Preventing Depression trial (RESPOND): study protocol for a phase III randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a global health challenge. Prevention is highlighted as a priority to reduce its prevalence. Although effective preventive interventions exist, the efficacy and coverage can be improved. One proposed means to increase efficacy is by using interventions to target specific risk factors, such as rumination. Rumination-focused CBT (RFCBT) was developed to specifically target depressive rumination and reduces acute depressive symptoms and relapse for patients with residual depression in a randomised controlled trial. Preliminary findings from a Dutch randomised prevention

Evaluating use of web-based interventions: an example of a Dutch sexual health intervention.

With the current increase in web-based interventions, the question of how to measure, and consequently improve engagement in such interventions is gaining more importance. Modern day web analytics tools make it easy to monitor use of web-based interventions. However, in this article, we propose that it would be more meaningful to first examine how the developers envisioned the use of the intervention to establish behavior change (i.e. intended use), before looking into how the intervention is ultimately used with web analytics (i.e. actual use). Such an approach responds to the regularly expre

A Web-Based Intervention (Germ Defence) to Increase Handwashing During a Pandemic: Process Evaluations of a Randomized Controlled Trial and Public Dissemination.

BACKGROUND: Washing hands helps prevent transmission of seasonal and pandemic respiratory viruses. In a randomized controlled trial (RCT) during the swine flu outbreak, participants with access to a fully automated, digital intervention promoting handwashing reported washing their hands more often and experienced fewer respiratory tract infections than those without access to the intervention. Based on these findings, the intervention was adapted, renamed as "Germ Defence," and a study was designed to assess the preliminary dissemination of the intervention to the general public to help preven

Supporting parent treatment decision-making in relapsed and refractory neuroblastoma: co-design of a web-based intervention.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children diagnosed with relapsed or refractory neuroblastoma become involved in making treatment decisions for their child due to an absence of no standard treatment protocol with no clear treatment endpoints. Relapsed and refractory neuroblastoma is a poor-prognosis childhood cancer with varying treatment options available depending on their child’s response to treatment. As a result, parents in partnership with their child’s medical team make repeated treatment decisions over time. Research has shown how this decision-making is influenced by uncertainty of their child’

A digital iCBT intervention for social anxiety disorder in Quebec and Ontario: protocol for a multi-phase effectiveness-implementation study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most prevalent anxiety disorders in Canada. Viable therapy options for the treatment of SAD include CBT being delivered virtually. In Australia, an innovative internet-delivered cognitive-behavioral therapy (iCBT) program for social anxiety has been developed, implemented, and demonstrated as effective. To make available high-quality and real-time evidence in response to the crucial need to access psychological services to meet population mental health needs, we propose to conduct a Canadian adaptation of the iCBT Shyness Program and to e
