The Emotional Experience of Time: Effects of Anxiety and Interoceptive Ability on Temporal Perception.

Our experience of time is deeply shaped by emotional and bodily states. Anxiety is known to distort our temporal perception, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we tested whether interoception links anxiety to variability in timing. Thirty participants underwent fMRI while performing a temporal reproduction task within a modified Threat of Scream paradigm. Safe and Threat blocks alternated, with aversive screams unpredictably delivered during Threat blocks. Screams reliably increased subjective anxiety and engaged salience and limbic regions, including the amygdala, h

The cognitive neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the impact of Interoceptive attention on cognitive control.

Influential theories and extensive research suggest that interoception significantly affects an individual's cognition and emotions, yet the neural mechanisms involved remain incompletely understood. This study aims to clarify the neurophysiological dynamics of how interoceptive attention modulates cognitive control. Participants completed a classic Stroop task preceded by cue stimuli designed to bias processing toward cardiac/interoceptive information (normal vs. abnormal heart-rate cues) or externally salient threat-related information (fearful faces). Neural electrophysiological data elicit

Regulatory architecture controlling terminal differentiation of an interoceptive paraneuron in C. elegans.

Interoceptive paraneurons are neuron-like cells located within internal epithelial cell surfaces that sense internal stimuli to evoke specific behavioral or physiological responses. The elucidation of terminal differentiation programs of paraneurons is expected to provide insights into how epithelial cells acquire neuron-like feature during development and possibly also over evolutionary time. We define here transcriptional programs that control the terminal differentiation of an interoceptive paraneuron class in the nematode C. elegans, called uv1. The uv1 cells sense mechanosensory inputs in

Interoceptive and metacognitive contributors to fatigue in multiple sclerosis: network and mediation analyses.

BACKGROUND: Although fatigue is one of the most prevalent symptoms in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), its underlying mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. Emerging evidence suggests that interoceptive sensibility and maladaptive metacognitive beliefs may play a central role in the development and maintenance of fatigue. The present study examined the interplay between interoceptive sensibility, maladaptive metacognitive beliefs, affective symptoms, and fatigue in individuals with MS. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 240 patients with relapsing-remitting MS completed valid

Synchronization of Cardiac and Musical Signals Improves Interoceptive, Cardiac, and Emotional Functioning.

The ability to seamlessly integrate sensory information from the environment (exteroception) and physiological states (interoception) is a key aspect of our awareness and well-being. Alterations in these processes often result in uncertainty about bodily states and dysregulation of physiological and emotional processes, as observed in clinical conditions. In this study, we employed an interactive music system as a novel method to improve interoceptive, cardiac, and emotional functioning, combining cardiac biofeedback, mindfulness, and music listening approaches. A sample of 24 healthy particip

Predictive role of exteroceptive and interoceptive bodily dimensions to schizotypal personality traits.

The phenomenological approach to schizophrenia emphasizes the role of bodily experiences in the onset and manifestation of positive, negative and disorganized psychotic symptoms. According to the dimensional approach to psychosis, there exists a continuum ranging from individuals with low levels of schizotypy to diagnosed schizophrenia patients, with schizotypy encompassing positive-like, negative-like, and disorganized-like symptoms of schizophrenia. Empirical evidence suggests that along this continuum, both exteroceptive (external sensory) and interoceptive (internal bodily) dimensions migh

Interoceptive predictive coding, active inference and the generation of hypnotic suggestion responses.

Hypnosis research flourishes when competing theoretical models make testable predictions about significant psychological, physiological and clinical outcomes. Neurocomputational theories are currently unifying theory and research in these diverse domains and are poised to enter the field of hypnosis. Here we explore three current attempts to employ Bayesian predictive coding models to understand the mechanisms used to generate responses to hypnotic suggestions. Predictive coding is shown to be a framework able to generate multiple theorical explanations with testable predictions and distinct c

The relationship between interoceptive emotional awareness, neuroticism, and depression, anxiety, and stress.

COVID-19 has caused challenges to daily living globally, with profound implications for negative mood. A variety of state and trait-based factors can influence how a person may respond and adapt to challenges such as a global pandemic. Personality is an area impacting how a person responds to both internal and external situations (trait) and Emotional Awareness (EA) is a facet of interoception (an awareness of the mind-body connection) that determines the way an individual interprets their physiological state of the body, and the associated emotions (state-trait). Both areas have been well res

A novel analysis of interoceptive underpinnings of anxious psychopathology in COVID-19 survivors.

INTRODUCTION: SARS-CoV-2 affects brain, body, and their interchange. We investigated interoceptive mechanisms in COVID-19 survivors focusing on their potential link with psychopathology and inflammatory biomarkers. METHODS: We assessed interoceptive accuracy (IAc) and time-perceiving (TA) skills of 57 COVID-19 survivors one month after hospital discharge through, respectively, a heartbeats perception task and a time duration task. Each participant was assessed about his interoceptive awareness (IAw) through Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness questionnaire (MAIA) and then,

Relationship of interoceptive accuracy in acne vulgaris patients: A prospective, controlled study.

Acne vulgaris (AV) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition predominantly observed during adolescence. Interoception accuracy (IAc) refers to the ability to perceive internal bodily states such as hunger and thirst. Since the brain and skin originate from the same embryological layer, the ectoderm, it is hypothesized that skin changes and disorders might affect individual perceptions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between IAc and AV. This study included 94 AV patients and 94 sex- and age-matched healthy controls. The participants completed the Beck Depression Invent

A vagal-brainstem interoceptive circuit for cough-like defensive behaviors in mice.

Coughing is a respiratory behavior that plays a crucial role in protecting the respiratory system. Here we show that the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) in mice contains heterogenous neuronal populations that differentially control breathing. Within these subtypes, activation of tachykinin 1 (Tac1)-expressing neurons triggers specific respiratory behaviors that, as revealed by our detailed characterization, are cough-like behaviors. Chemogenetic silencing or genetic ablation of Tac1 neurons inhibits cough-like behaviors induced by tussive challenges. These Tac1 neurons receive synaptic inp

Sensitive liberals and unfeeling conservatives? Interoceptive sensitivity predicts political liberalism.

The stark divide between the political right and left is rooted in conflicting beliefs, values, and personality-and, recent research suggests, perhaps even lower-level physiological differences between individuals. In this registered report, we investigated a novel domain of ideological differences in physiological processes: interoceptive sensitivity-that is, a person's attunement to their own internal bodily states and signals (e.g., physiological arousal, pain, and respiration). We conducted two studies testing the hypothesis that greater interoceptive sensitivity would be associated with g

The relationship between brain neural correlates, self-objectification, and interoceptive sensibility.

Interoceptive sensibility refers to the tendency to focus on internal bodily states and the capacity to detect them. As the subjective dimension of interoception, interoceptive sensibility plays a key role in individuals' health. Self-objectification, a process by which individuals tend to adopt a third-person's perspective of their physical self, leads to decreased interoceptive sensibility. However, few studies regarding the neural basis of interoceptive sensibility and the underlying mechanism of the relationship between self-objectification and interoceptive sensibility have been conducted

Capsaicin-Sensitive Vagal Afferent Nerve-Mediated Interoceptive Signals in the Esophagus.

Heartburn and non-cardiac chest pain are the predominant symptoms in many esophageal disorders, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), non-erosive reflux disease (NERD), functional heartburn and chest pain, and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). At present, neuronal mechanisms underlying the process of interoceptive signals in the esophagus are still less clear. Noxious stimuli can activate a subpopulation of primary afferent neurons at their nerve terminals in the esophagus. The evoked action potentials are transmitted through both the spinal and vagal pathways to their central terminal

The Neural Bases of Interoceptive Encoding and Recall in Healthy Adults and Adults With Depression.

BACKGROUND: Theoretical models assert that the brain's interoceptive network links external stimuli with their interoceptive consequences, thereby supporting later recall of these associations to guide the selection of healthy behaviors. If these accounts are correct, previously reported interoceptive abnormalities in major depressive disorder (MDD) should lead to altered recall of associations between external stimuli and their interoceptive (somatic) consequences. To date, the processes underlying interoceptive recall have never been experimentally investigated. METHODS: We designed and imp

Dynamics of Defensive Response Mobilization to Approaching External Versus Interoceptive Threat.

BACKGROUND: Excessive fear and anxiety are core features of anxiety disorders. Defensive response mobilization varies dynamically with threat proximity. METHODS: We analyzed defensive responses in 48 healthy students to an approaching external, predator-like threat (an electric shock resembling a predator attack) versus an approaching threat from inside the body (feeling of dyspnea as evoked by forced breath-holding). Threats either were inevitable or could be avoided by button press. RESULTS: Autonomic changes (heart rate, skin conductance), defensive reflex priming (startle eyeblink respon

Interaction effect of brooding rumination and interoceptive awareness on depression and anxiety symptoms.

Awareness of the body (i.e., interoceptive awareness) and self-referential thought represent two distinct, yet habitually integrated aspects of self. A recent neuroanatomical and processing model for depression and anxiety incorporates the connections between increased but low fidelity afferent interoceptive input with self-referential and belief-based states. A deeper understanding of how self-referential processes are integrated with interoceptive processes may ultimately aid in our understanding of altered, maladaptive views of the self - a shared experience of individuals with mood and anx

The Development of Novel Interoceptive Exposure Methods for Inducing Derealization and Depersonalization Symptoms.

Derealization and depersonalization and are commonly experienced by individuals with panic disorder. Although interoceptive exposure (IE) is a key therapeutic component in the treatment of panic disorder, there currently are few recognized ways to elicit reactions that successfully mimic dissociative symptoms commonly experienced during panic. We examined the ability of several novel methods that elicit anomalous and confusing perceptual experiences to induce at least moderately intense dissociative reactions in a college student sample (N = 34). Two of the novel procedures (i.e., stripes and

Interoceptive sensitivity in anxiety and anxiety disorders: an overview and integration of neurobiological findings.

Interoceptive sensitivity, particularly regarding heartbeat, has been suggested to play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of anxiety and anxiety disorders. This review provides an overview of methods which are frequently used to assess heartbeat perception in clinical studies and summarizes presently available results referring to interoceptive sensitivity with respect to heartbeat in anxiety-related traits (anxiety sensitivity, state/trait anxiety), panic disorder and other anxiety disorders. In addition, recent neurobiological studies of neuronal activation correlates of heartbeat perceptio
