Epidermal parasitic skin diseases (EPSD) are a heterogeneous category of infectious diseases in which parasite-host interactions are confined to the upper layer of the skin. The six major EPSD are scabies, pediculosis (capitis, corporis and pubis), tungiasis and hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans. We summarize the current knowledge on EPSD and show that these diseases are widespread, polyparasitism is common, and significant primary and secondary morbidity occurs. We show that poverty favours the presence of animal reservoirs, ensures ongoing transmission, facilitates atypical methods of

In this study we determined the causes of mortality and disease in a total of 325 lagomorphs (rabbits and hares) in northern Spain between 2000 and 2018. Risk factors such as the species, age, sex, time of year and origin were also considered. Clinical signs, gross and histopathological findings and ancillary test results were the basis for the final diagnoses that were reviewed to classify and identify the different disorders. A total of 26 different conditions were identified. A single cause of death or illness was detected in 267 animals. They were grouped into parasitic conditions (n= 65;

By 2050 our civilized planet may be comprised predominantly of networked megacities embedded in warm subtropical and tropical climates, and under stress from climate change and catastrophic weather events. Urban slum areas in these cities, including those found in wealthier middle- and high-income nations (blue marble health), will be especially vulnerable to disease. Moreover, regional conflicts fought over shifting and limited resources, including water, will collapse health systems infrastructures to further promote disease emergence and reemergence. Thus while by 2050 we might congratulate

The morphology and functions of gastrointestinal mast cells (MCs) under physiological and pathological conditions were described. Special attention was paid to the MCs origin, differentiation and morphological and biochemical aspects of their degranulation. Mast cells are important component of normal architecture of the gastrointestinal tract. Many substances released from MCs during degranulation are biologically active and mediate numerous processes: blood flow regulation, epithelial and endothelial permeability, mucosal secretion, gastrointestinal tract motility, immunological events relat

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Intestinal protozoa are common pathogens of diarrhea globally. However, the etiology of diarrhea due to intestinal protozoan infections in China is not known.
WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: Based on active syndromic surveillance in Shanghai, Zhenjiang, and Danyang during 2011-2015 and 2019-2021, 89 (1.67%) patients were infected with intestinal protozoa (Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, Enterocytozoon bieneusi, and Cyclospora cayetanensis), and positivity rates statistically differed by region and age.
WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEA

Developed countries have experienced a steady increase in atopic disease and disorders of immune dysregulation since the 1980s. This increase parallels a decrease in infectious diseases within the same time period, while developing countries seem to exhibit the opposite effect, with less immune dysregulation and a higher prevalence of infectious disease. The "hygiene hypothesis", proposed by Strachan in 1989, aimed to explain this peculiar generational rise in immune dysregulation. However, research over the past 10 years provides evidence connecting the commensal and symbiotic microbes (intes

BACKGROUND: The Northern pike, Esox lucius, is a large, long-lived, top-predator fish species and occupies a broad range of aquatic environments. This species is on its way to becoming an important model organism and has the potential to contribute new knowledge and a better understanding of ecology and evolutionary biology. Very few studies have been done on the intestinal pathology of pike infected with helminths. The present study details the first Italian record of adult Acanthocephalus lucii reported in the intestine of E. lucius.
RESULTS: A total of 22 pike from Lake Piediluco (Central

BACKGROUND: Malaria and intestinal helminths are parasitic diseases causing high morbidity and mortality in most tropical parts of the world, where climatic conditions and sanitation practices favor their prevalence. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and possible impact of falciparum malaria and intestinal helminths co-infection among school children in Kajola, Osun state, Nigeria.
METHODS: Fresh stool and blood samples were collected from 117 primary school children age range 4-15 years. The stool samples were processed using both Kato-Katz and formol-ether concentration

THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINANTS WHICH HAVE THEIR MAJOR EFFECTS ON THE SMALL INTESTINE MAY BE CLASSIFIED INTO FIVE MAJOR CATEGORIES: (1) bacterial, viral, and parasitic agents, (2) food and plant substances, (3) environmental and industrial products, (4) pharmaceutical agents, and (5) toxic agents whose metabolic effects are dependent on interreaction with intestinal bacterial flora, other physical agents (detergents), human intestinal enzyme deficiency states, and the nutritional state of the host.Bacterial, viral, and parasitic agents are the most important of all such agents, being responsibl

Aim: Ova and parasite examination by flotation requires hypertonic solutions, which can damage the egg and cyst membranes, leading to false negatives. The authors investigated the harmful effects of ZnSO4 and C12H22O11 solutions on the ova and parasite examination. Materials & methods: The authors processed samples using the Three Fecal Test technique. Aliquots were floated in different pH levels, temperatures and solution densities. Results: Densities above 1.12 g/ml led structures to collapse after 6-10 min. pH neutralization of the ZnSO4 solution did not prevent the parasites from changing.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Intestinal parasites are important enteric pathogens. Poverty, low quality of food and water supply and poor sanitation systems are the important factors associated with intestinal parasitic infections. These kinds of infections can be a good index for hygienic and sanitation status of the society. The aim: To study dynamics of infectious and parasitic diseases (for 2008-2013 years) among the children population in Dnipro region and to define influence of water factor on the disease and prevalence given class of illnesses.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods:

Intestinal parasitic diseases constitute a cosmopolitan public health concern, with greater prevalence in developing countries, and mainly affecting children. The aim of this study was to develop an educational intervention aimed at mothers/guardians of children attending three child development centers (CDI) in Santa Fe, Argentina, during 2018. An educational intervention was conducted using a descriptive, quasi-experimental design, with pre- and post-intervention assessment. This intervention included 36 mothers, and was carried out in three stages: diagnosis, intervention and final evaluati

Intestinal parasitic diseases such as enterobiasis, giardiasis, and ascariasis are detected most frequently in Romania, but their importance is definitely surpassed by trichinellosis, cystic echinococcosis, and toxoplasmosis. Malaria was common until its eradication in 1963, and only imported cases are reported nowadays. The aim of this review was to bring together essential data on the epidemiology and history of human parasitoses in Romania. Information on 43 parasitic diseases was collected from numerous sources, most of them unavailable abroad or inaccessible to the international scientifi

Parasitic diseases suppose an important health problem in people from high endemic areas, so these must be discarded properly. Usually, these infections develop asymptomatically but, in propitious situations, are likely to reactivate themselves and can cause clinical symptoms and/or complications in the receiving country. Moreover, in some cases it is possible local transmission. Early diagnosis of these parasitic diseases made by appropriate parasitological techniques and its specific treatment will benefit both, the individual and the community. These techniques must be selected according to

In summary, it appears that giardiasis, coccidiosis, cryptosporidiosis, strongyloidiasis, capillariasis and perhaps P. falciparum malaria are the only parasitic diseases which cause malabsorption of many nutrients. D. latum and A. lumbricoides interfere with vitamin B12 and vitamin A absorption, respectively. In view of the increasing use of immunosuppressive therapy, it is likely that malabsorption caused by intestinal parasites may become even more evident in the future.
