Reversible encephalitis-like episodes in fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by CGG repeat expansion of FMR1 gene. Both FXTAS and neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) belong to polyglycine diseases and present similar clinical, radiological, and pathological features, making it difficult to distinguish these diseases. Reversible encephalitis-like attacks are often observed in NIID. It is unclear whether they are presented in FXTAS and can be used for differential diagnosis of NIID and FXTAS. CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old Chinese male with late-onset gait

Stroke-like episodes in patients with adult-onset neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease and patients with late-onset MELAS: A comparative study.

OBJECTIVE: To delineate the characteristics of stroke-like episodes (SLEs) in patients with adult-onset neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) and to compare these characteristics with those of patients with MELAS. METHODS: Twenty-three adult-onset NIID patients who presented with acute or subacute brain disorders and 13 late-onset MELAS patients were enrolled in the study. Patients with NIID were categorized into the SLEs group and the encephalopathy-like episodes (ELEs) group according to the associated stroke-like lesions (SLLs) findings. Clinical characteristics were compared betw

Adult-onset autosomal dominant leukodystrophy and neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease: lessons from two new Chinese families.

INTRODUCTION: Adult-onset autosomal dominant leukodystrophy (ADLD) is a rare genetic leukoencephalopathy caused by duplication of the lamin B1 gene (LMNB1) or LMNB1 upstream deletions. Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is another leukoencephalopathy due to GGC repeat expansion in the 5'-untranslated region of the NOTCH2NLC gene. Here, we report two Chinese ADLD families with neuroimaging and clinical features mimicking NIID. METHODS: We conducted detailed medical history inquiry, neurological examinations, and magnetic resonance imaging in the two families. Candidate gene sequenc

The polyG diseases: a new disease entity.

Recently, inspired by the similar clinical and pathological features shared with fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS), abnormal expansion of CGG repeats in the 5' untranslated region has been found in neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID), oculopharyngeal myopathy with leukoencephalopathy (OPML), and oculopharyngodistal myopathy (OPDMs). Although the upstream open reading frame has not been elucidated in OPML and OPDMs, polyglycine (polyG) translated by expanded CGG repeats is reported to be as a primary pathogenesis in FXTAS and NIID. Collectively, these findings indic

Necrotic Hepatitis Associated with Phasianus Chaphamaparvovirus 1 and Coccidiosis Coinfection in Pheasant Chicks (Phasianus colchicus) in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Phasianus chaphamaparvovirus 1 is a newly recognized pathogen associated with high mortality in young pheasant chicks with significant losses for pheasant breeders. Here we present an outbreak of necrotizing hepatitis with high mortality in a flock of young pheasant chicks in Bosnia and Herzegovina associated with Phasianus chaphamaparvovirus 1 and coccidiosis coinfection. Severe necrotizing hepatitis with characteristic intranuclear inclusion bodies in affected hepatocytes was observed on microscopic examination. In addition, multifocal areas of intestinal mucosal necrosis with numerous devel

Cytomegalic Inclusion Disease caused by Cytomegalovirus Infection in the Salivary Glands of an African Hedgehog (Atelerix arbiventris).

Cytomegalic inclusion disease (CID) in the salivary gland of African hedgehogs (Atelerix arbiventris) has been reported before, and is suspected to reflect a cytomegalovirus infection. However, a recent ultrastructural study reported that African hedgehog CID reflected oncocytic metaplasia, mimicking a cytomegalovirus infection. We examined the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands of a 1-year-old male African hedgehog. Histologically, there were multiple foci composed of cytomegalic cells with intranuclear inclusion bodies. Ultrastructurally, viral particles (109-118 nm in diameter) we

Pathogenicity of different strains of Rift Valley fever virus in Swiss albino mice.

Laboratory mice were inoculated with 3 different strains of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV): namely, the prototype, the Nigerian, and the Lunyo variant strains of RVFV. Animals were inoculated with either infective mouse brain or serum by the i.c. or i.p. route and organs of inoculated animals examined for virus content and histopathological changes. Animals inoculated with either the classical or the Nigerian encephalitis only, to a ditropism involving mild lesions in the brain and liver or the typically severe RVFV hepatitis. The type of lesion shown was dependent on the source of inoculum an

Quantitative evaluation of intranuclear inclusions in SSPE: correlation with disease duration.

Three types of intranuclear inclusions in neurones, oligodendrocytes and astrocytes were quantitatively evaluated by electron microscopy in the autopsy material derived from six cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) with different duration of disease. Viral nucleocapsids were found in neurones and oligodendrocytes with the highest incidence (about 38% of nuclei) in two acute cases (adolescent), whereas in two subacute cases only 10% of nuclei of these cells contained nucleocapsids. However, in one acute case (child) and one chronic case, no nucleocapsids were detected at all, des

First identification and characterization of ovine gammaherpesvirus type 2 in horses and artiodactyla from an outbreak of malignant catarrhal fever in Mexico.

Ovine gammaherpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2), a member of the genus Macavirus, causes sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF), a fatal lymphoproliferative disease affecting a wide variety of ungulates in addition to horses. This study described an outbreak of SA-MCF in Mexico and the identification of the OvHV-2 virus in primary rabbit testis cultures through the generation of intranuclear inclusion bodies, syncytia, immunofluorescence (IF), immunocytochemistry (ICC), immunohistochemistry (IHC), endpoint polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and partial sequencing of the ORF75 gene. The animals in

Case report: Adult-onset neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease with an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis phenotype.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is one of the differential diagnoses of diseases that occur in adulthood and lead to progressive generalized muscle weakness. Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a disease in which histopathologically eosinophilic nuclear inclusion bodies are found in various systems. Both familial and sporadic forms of the disease have been reported. Most cases of sporadic NIID are of the dementia type, in which the main symptom is dementia at the first onset. Familial NIID is more diverse, with the main dominant symptoms being muscle weakness (NIID-M), dement

Tumours of the anterior uvea. II. Intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions in malignant melanoma of the iris.

Intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions have been described previously in both human and animal tissue. So far as we are aware they are described in detail for the first time in this paper in 60 cases of malignant melanoma of the iris, usually in spindle cells. The light microscopic appearances are described, and electron microscopic studies of selected cases show clearly the genesis of these inclusions by cytoplasmic invagination of the nuclear membrane. Their significance is discussed. It is of interest that we have seen identical inclusions in malignant melanomas of the ciliary body, choroid, a

[Molluscum contagiosum. Clinicopathologic and ultrastructural study].

26 usually multiple Molluscum contagiosum (MC) lesions corresponding to 14 patients (x age, 12 years old) mainly located in face and body, and unfrequently in genital area, were studied. Under light microscopy, we emphasize the presence of molluscum bodies corresponding ultrastructurally to large bodies of viral particles within a protein matrix. Intranuclear inclusions of suspected viral origin were noted too. Lesions previously embedded in paraffin showed a perfect preservation of their viral particles.

Infection due to Buteo buteo herpesvirus in a common buzzard (Buteo buteo insularum).

This study aimed to document the pathological findings observed in a common buzzard (Buteo buteo insularum) from Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Atlantic Ocean), naturally infected with Buteo buteo herpesvirus (HV). Local authorities found the common buzzard alive, but it died after 10 days of specialized veterinary care. Postmortem investigation, including complete gross and histologic examination, immunohistochemistry, microbiology, and PCR, was performed. The animal presented necrotizing heterophilic and histiocytic bilateral conjunctivitis, stomatitis, pharyngitis, rhinitis, and sinusitis wi

Alphaherpesvirus-associated disease in greater bilbies (Macrotis lagotis).

CASE REPORT: A captive breeding colony of 9 greater bilbies (Macrotis lagotis) exhibited mild upper respiratory signs and sudden deaths with 100% mortality over a 2-week period. Histologically, acute necrotising and erosive epithelial lesions throughout the upper respiratory system and bronchi were associated with eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies. Inclusions were also present in hepatocytes and adrenocortical cells, but were not always associated with necrosis. Transmission electron microscopy of lung sections revealed nucleocapsids forming arrays within some nuclei. A pan-herpesviru

Mortality due to polyomavirus infection in two nightjars (Caprimulgus europaeus).

Two nightjars (Caprimulgus europaeus) from a bird park in the Netherlands died suddenly, with no clinical signs, within 1 month of each other. The main pathologic findings at necropsy were splenomegaly and hepatic necrosis. On histologic examination, intranuclear viral inclusion bodies consistent with avian polyomavirus were observed in the liver, spleen, and kidneys. Polymerase chain reaction testing of samples from the liver, spleen, and kidneys detected avian polyomaviral DNA, and sequence analysis showed that the virus had a sequence homology of 99% to psittacine avian polyomavirus strains

Herpes simplex encephalitis in a domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

An adult domestic rabbit showing neurological signs was subjected to euthanasia. At necropsy, macroscopical lesions were absent. Histopathologically, extensive lesions were seen, particularly in the cerebral cortex. Non-suppurative meningitis was present and there was lymphocytic and plasmacytic perivascular cuffing in the neuropil. The cerebral cortex showed extensive segmental neuronal and glial necrosis. Within the necrotic areas, large amphophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were present in neurons and glial cells. Immunohistochemically, neurons and glial cells in the affected areas were

Lesions and viral loads in racing pigeons naturally coinfected with pigeon circovirus and columbid alphaherpesvirus 1 in Australia.

Columbid alphaherpesvirus 1 (CoHV1) is associated with oral or upper respiratory tract lesions, encephalitis, and occasional fatal systemic disease in naive or immunosuppressed pigeons. Clinical disease is often reported with CoHV1 and coinfecting viruses, including pigeon circovirus (PiCV), which may cause host immunosuppression and augment lesion development. A natural outbreak of CoHV1 and PiCV coinfection occurred in a flock of 60 racing rock pigeons (Columba livia), in which 4 pigeons succumbed within 7 d of clinical onset. Lesions included suppurative stomatitis, pharyngitis, cloacitis,

[Gastric ulcer as a unique and symptomatic manifestation of infection by cytomegalovirus in a healthy adult].

A previously healthy female without risk factors had cytomegalic inclusion disease with symptomatic gastric involvement and without evidence of systemic cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. Multiple ulcerations with a fibrinous bottom were discovered by fibrogastroscopy in the gastric body and antrum. Histological study showed cells with intranuclear inclusions and basophilic nuclear cytoplasm. The detection of specific IgM and its subsequent negativization suggest an active CMV infection. Gastric infection may be the isolated and symptomatic feature of the disease in the healthy adult.
