Although rare, inadvertently dislodged cannula can occur during cataract surgery. We report two cases of cannula-associated ocular injury during stromal hydration of the main corneal incision despite the use of Luer-lock syringes. Case 1 suffered from an initially occult intraocular injury which led to a delayed presentation of vitreous prolapsing into the anterior chamber, presumed posterior capsular rupture, vitreous hemorrhage, and multiple retinal tears, which required a three-port pars plana vitrectomy and cryotherapy. Case 2 sustained an iris laceration, anterior capsular tear, and posto

OBJECTIVE Historically, performing neurosurgery with the patient in the sitting position offered advantages such as improved visualization and gravity-assisted retraction. However, this position fell out of favor at many centers due to the perceived risk of venous air embolism (VAE) and other position-related complications. Some neurosurgical centers continue to perform sitting-position cases in select patients, often using modern monitoring techniques that may improve procedural safety. Therefore, this paper reports the risks associated with neurosurgical procedures performed in the sitting p

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this article is to describe an additional choice of intraoperative shunt in the surgical repair of complicated carotid body tumors (CBTs).
METHODS: Between January 2005 and August 2010, 47 CBT resections were performed at our division. Thirty-seven patients underwent routine tumor resection (78.7%). However, 10 of the tumor resections were complicated because of severe adhesions and involvement of the carotid artery. It was difficult to excise the tumors using routine methods. Intraoperative shunts were used for resection of these 10 complicated tumors (21.3%).

Iatrogenic spinal cord injury is the most feared complication of scoliosis surgery. The importance of combined somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and motor evoked potentials (MEP) monitoring during spine surgery is well known. The current authors retrospectively evaluated the results of neurophysiological intraoperative monitoring (IOM) in a large population of patients who underwent surgical treatment for spinal deformity. Intraoperative monitoring of SEPs and transcranial electrical stimulation MEPs (TES-MEP) was performed in 172 successive patients who underwent surgical treatment of idi

Aortic dissection is a rare but devastating complication of cardiopulmonary bypass. Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography can be a useful technique to define the anatomy of the dissection, to evaluate its extension and progression, and to detect the presence of aortic insufficiency. We describe two cases in which transesophageal echocardiography helped in making a rapid diagnosis of aortic dissection during cardiac surgery and demonstrate how it may play a role in therapeutic decision making.

PURPOSE: Percutaneous endoscopic cervical discectomy (PECD) is an emerging surgical treatment for cervical disc herniation in recent years, but the complications of PECD are rarely reported. In this case report, we aimed to report two cases of total spinal anesthesia, an unusual complication of PECD.
METHODS AND RESULTS: One patient became unconscious with unstable vital signs and another patient appeared with numbness of both arms and legs during PECD operation.
CONCLUSIONS: From these two cases, we concluded that the operation of anchoring during PECD should be cautious and standardized, i

UNLABELLED: Oxford unicompartmental knee replacement (OUKR) is associated with a low perioperative complication rate. This case report describes a periprosthetic fracture of the medial femoral condyle that occurred during an OUKR. The patient was treated with a non-weight-bearing long leg cast for 6 weeks. Afterwards, the fracture had healed, and 3 months postoperatively, there was a full range of motion. Factors leading to this complication could be the impaction force or direction, or a diminished load resistance of the distal femur. Minimally displaced coronal periprosthetic fractures after

A 65-year-old man presenting with visceral malperfusion complicating acute type A aortic dissection underwent emergent surgery. Bypass grafting from the right common iliac artery to the superior mesenteric artery was performed prior to central aortic repair because intestinal ischemia caused hemodynamic instability. Subsequently, the ascending aorta was replaced with a Dacron graft under a condition of circulatory arrest with selective cerebral perfusion. Endotoxin adsorption was carried out intraoperatively in parallel with cardiopulmonary bypass to prevent postoperative end-organ failure. Th

Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is commonly used during thyroid surgery to facilitate recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) identification and potentially reduce related postoperative complications. However, the efficacy of routine IONM in decreasing complication rates remains debated. In this study, we investigated the impact of IONM on postoperative complications after thyroidectomy. This retrospective single-center study included 214 thyroidectomy operations performed between 2021 and 2024. Patients were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 (n = 107) underwent surgery with routine IONM, and Group

BACKGROUND: Most existing models for predicting postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) rely solely on preoperative variables and lack integration of intraoperative data or clinical tools for application.
METHODS: This study developed and externally validated logistic regression and machine learning (ML) models for predicting PPCs in non-cardiothoracic surgical patients undergoing general anesthesia. A cohort of 997 patients was randomly divided into training and test sets in a 7:3 ratio. The stepwise regression method was adopted to conduct feature screening on the preoperative dataset

BACKGROUND: Complications following abdominal surgery have a very significant negative impact on the patient and the health care system. Despite the spread of minimally invasive surgery, there is no automated way to use intraoperative video to predict complications. New developments in data storage capacity and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm creation now allow for this.
OBJECTIVE: This project aims to develop and validate deep learning models for accurately predicting postoperative complications, classified using the Clavien-Dindo scale. A key objective is to build and share an open-s

With the rapid development of surgical techniques and the deepening of minimally invasive concepts, single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) and robot-assisted surgery (RAS) are gaining increasing attention in the field of colorectal cancer treatment as representatives of modern surgery's move towards more minimally invasive and precise approaches. While these technologies offer advantages such as reduced trauma, less pain, and faster recovery, they also introduce unique challenges. The high technical demands of SILS, along with the lack of force feedback in robotic systems, can easily lead

Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency. Complicated appendicitis usually warrants perioperative antibiotic treatment in order to prevent infectious complications. Whether routine microbiological testing benefits the individual patient is a topic of debate. The goal of our study was to assess perioperative antibiotic prescriptions as well as the benefit of microbiological testing during the appendectomy as a predictor for bacteria encountered in infectious complications. This is a retrospective analysis of 1218 consecutive patients that underwent appendectomy at a tertiary referral c
