Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) increases DNA synthesis in rat FRTL-5 thyroid cells, as measured by increased incorporation of tritiated thymidine into DNA. Experiments were performed to investigate the change of hepatic T4 5'-deiodination and the preventive effects of selenium (Se) and vitamin E in rats fed grains from a Keshan disease (KD) endemic area. To investigate the activity of the thyroid gland to convert T4 to T3, we measured the activity of thyroid T4 5'-deiodinase in the following human thyroid glands: 9 normal glands, 5 Hashimoto's thyroiditis, 13 follicular adenomas, 11 methimazole (MMI)-treated Graves' disease (GD), 11 propranolol iodide-treated GD, and 8 propylthiouracil (PTU)-treated GD. PURPOSE: Thyroid autoimmunity might be in relation to other autoimmune endocrine disease or non-endocrine disorders and there are innate and adaptive immune cells in breast cancer. Because autoimmune factors are common characteristics of both thyroid autoimmunity and breast cancer, these two types of diseases may occur concurrently in certain patients. The chief goal of this meta-analysis is to perform a combined analysis of the raw data from all included studies, and thereby obtain a reliable conclusion concerning whether TgAb or TPOAb positivity and breast cancer are indeed correlated.
