OBJECTIVE: To report on a patient with clear gelatinoid deposits on the iris and in the anterior chamber (AC).
DESIGN: Observational case report.
METHODS: Examination of AC aspirate and iris and conjunctival biopsies by light and transmission electron microscopy.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Clinical and histopathological findings.
RESULTS: Analysis of the aqueous humor and iris ultrastructure disclosed the presence of urate deposits.
CONCLUSIONS: Urate deposition in the iris and anterior chamber rarely occurs.

A newborn boy was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma after a systemic workup was prompted because of abnormal-appearing eyes. Radiological examination revealed mass lesions involving the liver, brain, eyes, and ribs. A liver biopsy was performed before death and results showed hepatoblastoma, an unusual solid tumor of childhood. At autopsy, hepatoblastoma was also found histopathologically in the irides and choroid of both eyes. We report the presence of simple iris coloboma in 4 out of 5 female members comprising four generations of a Greek family. A varied degree of simple iris coloboma (i.e. not associated with a choroidal coloboma) was present in one eye of the maternal grandmother, mother, daughter and one out of 2 granddaughters of this family. The iris colobomata were associated with congenital lens opacities in 2 out of 4 of the females, macular degenerative changes in 2 cases and ocular hypertension in one case. The pathogenesis, heredity and associations of simple iris colobomata is discussed.

PURPOSE: Metastatic cancer to the iris is rare, and the best approaches to clinical recognition and treatment of this neoplasm are not widely known. We reviewed a series of patients with metastatic cancer to the iris and elucidated the clinical variations, diagnostic approaches, and treatment of this neoplasm.
METHODS: The files of the Wills Eye Hospital Ocular Oncology Service were surveyed, and cases of metastatic cancer to the iris were extracted for further analysis. General data, systemic data, tumor characteristics, diagnostic methods used, treatment, and prognosis were tabulated.

Metastasis to the iris is less frequent than that to the ciliary body and choroid. This might be the presenting feature. We report a 40 years male patient, a chronic smoker, who presented with pain, redenss and photophobia in the right eye. On detailed examination and investigations it turned out to be a case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the bronchus metastasising to the iris. The presentation, difficulty in the diagnosis and management is discussed with review of the relavent literature.

To identify conditions associated with neovascularization of the iris in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, we examined 36 eyes with this disorder seen at our hospital between 1979 and 1990. A retrospective study of all cases of iris melanoma in Northern Ireland over a 15-year period was undertaken. A total of 18 cases were identified. Of these, nine were histologically proved to be iris melanomas of various types. Within the period of follow-up two patients died from metastatic deposits. In both cases invasion of the anterior face of the ciliary body was present on histological examination. The implications for management are discussed.

It has been postulated that propranolol lowers the intraocular pressure by adrenergic neurone block. However, in the isolated iris of albino rabbits, there was only a small degree of cocaine-sensitive (i.e., neuronal) accumulation of 3H-(-)-propranolol, and none at all after pretreatment of the animals with reserpine. Microcysts of the iris pigment epithelium have been described in association with diabetes mellitus, systemic mucopolysaccharidoses. Menkes's syndrome, and in neonates. Our study covers 68 cases obtained at necropsy. We specifically examined the iris pigment epithelium for vacuolation. We found that microcysts are more widespread than previously thought. Iris angiograms were performed in 17 cases of uveal malignant melanoma, which were later histologically confirmed. In those 12 patients in whom the tumour was confined to the choroid, the angiograms revealed a punctate leakage of dye at the pupillary margin, a delayed filling of the vessels in certain areas and definite new vessel formation corresponding to rubeosis iridis.
