Despite the modern ventilation and waste anesthetic gas (WAG) scavenging systems, occupational exposure to common volatile anesthesia, isoflurane, can occur in the hospital and veterinary settings, but limited information exists on potential exposure and health risk of isoflurane. We assessed exposure dose rates and risks among clinicians and veterinary professionals from occupational exposure to isoflurane. Through a critical review of open literature (1965 to 2020), we summarized potential adverse effects and exposure scenarios of isoflurane among the professional groups, including anestheti

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess different amyloid beta subspecies' effects on behaviour and cognition in mice and their interaction with isoflurane anaesthesia.
METHODS: After governmental approval, cannulas were implanted in the lateral cerebral ventricle. After 14 days the mice were randomly intracerebroventricularly injected with Aβ 1-40 (Aβ40), Aβ 1-42 (Aβ42), 3NTyr10-Aβ (Aβ nitro), AβpE3-42 (Aβ pyro), or phosphate buffered saline. Four days after the injection, 30 mice (6 animals per subgroup) underwent general anaesthesia with isoflurane. A "sham" anaesthetic procedure w

BACKGROUND: The degree to which different volatile anesthetics depress carotid body hypoxic response relates to their ability to activate TASK potassium channels. Most commonly, volatile anesthetic pairs act additively at their molecular targets. We examined whether this applied to carotid body TASK channels.
METHODS: We studied halothane and isoflurane effects on hypoxia-evoked rise in intracellular calcium (Ca2+i, using the indicator Indo-1) in isolated neonatal rat glomus cells, and TASK single-channel activity (patch clamping) in native glomus cells and HEK293 cell line cells transiently

The present study aimed to determine whether isoflurane interferes with the analgesic effects of acupuncture (Ac) and electroacupuncture (EA), using a neuropathic pain (NP) rat model. In total, 140 male Wistar rats were used; isoflurane-induced nociceptive response was evaluated using the von Frey test, serum calcium-binding protein β (S100β) levels and nerve growth factor (NGF) levels in the left sciatic nerve. The NP model was induced by chronic constriction injury of the sciatic nerve at 14 days after surgery. Treatment was initiated after NP induction with or without isoflurane anesthesia

Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) causes reperfusion injury that when most severe is clinically manifested as a systemic inflammatory response syndrome. The anaesthetic propofol may have anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce such a response. We hypothesised differing effects of propofol and isoflurane on inflammatory markers in patients having CBR Forty patients undergoing elective CPB were randomised to receive either propofol or isoflurane for maintenance of anaesthesia. The aim of this study was to compare the cardiorespiratory and neurohormonal effects of methadone in conscious and in isoflurane anaesthetised dogs. Six mature dogs (28.0 ± 3.8 kg bodyweight) received intravenous (IV) methadone (1mg/kg) three times, once when conscious and twice during isoflurane anaesthesia (with a wash-out period of 1 week). The vasopressin antagonist relcovaptan (0.1mg/kg IV) was administered before the methadone either during the first or second (selected randomly) isoflurane anaesthesia to evaluate the contribution of vasopressin to methadone-associated vasoconstriction.

Repeated cocaine administration results in a progressive sensitization of behavior which typically occurs more readily in female rats than in males. Our recent studies of rats undergoing surgical procedures revealed that following anesthesia, females sensitized less than males receiving identical repeated cocaine injections. Since isoflurane acts primarily by increasing the effects of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) and reducing the effects of the excitatory amino acid glutamate, these amino acids may play more prominent roles in sensitization to cocaine in fema

BACKGROUND: High concentration of isoflurane often induces not only tachycardia but also hypertension during induction of anesthesia and causes further hyperdynamic changes after tracheal intubation.
METHODS: Forty patients, ASA physical status I, were randomly assigned to receive 4% or 2.5% isoflurane. Anesthesia was induced with thiamylal and vecuronium followed by mask ventilation with 0.5% isoflurane in oxygen. Isoflurane concentration was gradually increased to 4% or 2.5% in 2 min and the trachea was intubated after 3 min. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate (HR) were recorded e

BACKGROUND: Fentanyl decreases the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of inhaled anaesthetics and has been used clinically to reduce the requirements of other anaesthetic drugs in humans and small animals. We hypothesized that i.v. fentanyl would decrease the MAC of isoflurane in horses in a dose-dependent manner.
METHODS: Following determination of baseline MAC of isoflurane, fentanyl was administered i.v. to target plasma concentrations of 1, 8 and 16 ng ml(-1). Each horse was randomly assigned two of three target concentrations administered in ascending order. Loading and infusion doses

BACKGROUND: There is strong evidence to suggest that anoxic depolarization (AD) is an important factor in hypoxia/ischaemia-induced neural damage. Treatments that prevent the occurrence of AD may be useful in providing neuronal protection against hypoxia. The current study was designed to determine whether general anaesthetics which have been suggested to 'induce prophylaxis' against hypoxia can attenuate the incidence of AD.
METHODS: The effects of anoxia (3 min) on evoked extracellularly recorded field potentials of CA1 neurons in rat hippocampal slices were assessed in the absence and pres

Isoflurane impairs autoregulation of cerebral blood flow in a dose-related manner. Previous investigations in several other conditions have demonstrated that impaired autoregulation can be restored by hyperventilation. We hypothesized that hypocapnia may restore cerebral autoregulation impaired by isoflurane anesthesia. We administered isoflurane in 100% oxygen to 12 healthy patients aged 21-59 yr scheduled for elective nonneurological surgery. Isoflurane end-tidal concentration was individualized at 0.1% to 0.2% less than that required to induce short periods of isoelectric electroencephalogr
