Strain mapping using compressed sensing accelerated 4D flow MRI-Potential for detecting coactivation in thigh muscles.

INTRODUCTION: Deterioration in knee extensor function is significantly related to decline in functional mobility, stability and proprioception increasing risk of injury and falls. Coactivation of the hamstrings has been reported in normal and neuromuscular conditions during knee extension emphasizing coordinated muscle activation through range of motion. This study evaluated a prototype compressed sensing accelerated 4D Flow (CS-4DFlow) sequence for volumetric MRI strain mapping of the entire thigh during isometric contraction. METHODS: Dynamic imaging (at 30% and 45% Maximum Voluntary Contra

β-adrenergic effects on cardiac myofilaments and contraction in an integrated rabbit ventricular myocyte model.

A five-state model of myofilament contraction was integrated into a well-established rabbit ventricular myocyte model of ion channels, Ca(2+) transporters and kinase signaling to analyze the relative contribution of different phosphorylation targets to the overall mechanical response driven by β-adrenergic stimulation (β-AS). β-AS effect on sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) handling, Ca(2+), K(+) and Cl(-) currents, and Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase properties was included based on experimental data. The inotropic effect on the myofilaments was represented as reduced myofilament Ca(2+) sensitivity (XBCa) and

Determinants of energy utilization in the activated myocardium.

This is a review of work dealing with the effect of pressure overload and thryotoxic hypertrophy of rabbit hearts on the production of total activity related (TA) and initial (I) heats during isometric contraction. Pressure overload hypertrophy is produced by constricting the pulmonary artery with a spiral monel metal clip. Thyrotoxic hypertrophy is produced by 14 daily i.m. injections of 0.2 mg L-thyroxine per kilogram. Heat output is measured with Hill-type planar vacuum deposited bismuth and antimony thermopiles, and force is measured with a capacitance strain gauge. The pressure overload r

Effects of NMES-elicited versus voluntary low-level conditioning contractions on explosive knee extensions.

OBJECTIVES: Electrically-induced or voluntary conditioning-contractions (CC) can be used to affect contractile properties of a subsequent explosive contraction (EC). Here, we aimed at comparing the effect of neuromuscular-electrical-stimulation (NMES) vs voluntary CC performed prior to explosive contractions of the knee extensors. METHODS: A 10 sec NMES CC (100Hz, 1000μs, 10% MVC), or a voluntary contraction (VOL CC) mimicking the NMES CC, preceded an isometric EC of the knee extensors. Explosive contraction was performed with the goal to reach the target (70% MVC) as quickly as possible. RE

Faster early rate of force development in warmer muscle: an in vivo exploration of fascicle dynamics and muscle-tendon mechanical properties.

Although heat exposure has been shown to increase the skeletal rate of force development (RFD), the underlying processes remain unknown. This study investigated the effect of heat on gastrocnemius medialis (GM) muscle-tendon properties and interactions. Sixteen subjects performed electrically evoked and voluntary contractions combined with ultrafast ultrasound under thermoneutral [control (CON): 25.8 ± 1.8°C, core temperature 37.0 ± 0.3°C, muscle temperature 34.0 ± 1.1°C] and passive heat exposure [hot (HOT): 47.4 ± 1.8°C, core temperature 38.4 ± 0.3°C, muscle temperature 37.0 ± 0.8°C] conditi

Is the Interpolated-Twitch Technique-Derived Voluntary Activation Just Neural? Novel Perspectives from Mechanomyographic Data.

PURPOSE: Voluntary activation (VA) determined by interpolation-twitch technique could be affected by the characteristics of the in-series elastic components. To overcome this possible bias, a novel approach based on the mechanomyographic (MMG) signal to detect voluntary activation (VA MMG ) has been proposed. We examined the changes in VA and VA MMG after passive stretching to check the influence of neural and mechanical factors in the force output. METHODS: Twenty-six healthy men underwent VA assessment using the interpolated-twitch technique before and after unilateral passive stretching of

Contralateral protective effect against repeated bout of damaging exercise: A meta-analysis.

The purpose was to summarize the studies examining the contralateral protective effect on the maximal strength in the subsequent bout of muscle-damaging exercise. The literature search was conducted through CINAHL plus, SportDiscus, and PubMed. Hedge's g effect size (ES) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed using a random effects model. From 14 papers and 25 ESs, the mean ES for contralateral repeated bout effect (CL-RBE) on 1-, 2-, and 3-day post maximal strength were -0.61 (95% CI = -0.80, -0.41), -0.50 (95% CI = -0.67, -0.33), and -0.74 (95% CI = -1.01, -0.48), respectively. The afferent influence on the voluntary firing range of individual motor units in man.

The firing ranges of 50 normal anterior tibial or short toe extensor motor units in sustained isometric voluntary contraction were studied in electromyographic recordings. The afferent inflow was decreased by compression of the sciatic nerve, thereby blocking large afferents before alpha efferents. Motor units with low minimum and low maximum rates before blockade had higher minimum and maximum rates before blockade had a lower minimum but an unchanged maximum rate on blockade. The firing range recorded for both types of motor unit on blockade was also recorded for all tonically firing motor u

Relationships between resting blood flow and the indices of muscle damage after eccentric contractions.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to examine the relationships between increments in resting blood flow and isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) force reduction, muscle soreness, and swelling after eccentric contractions (ECs). METHODS: Twenty-one young healthy men (age 20.8 ± 1.6 years; height 172.0 ± 5.3 cm; weight 64.9 ± 7.7 kg) were recruited for this study. All participants performed right arm ECs in five sets of 20 repetitions with 3 min of rest between the sets. The dumbbell weight corresponded to 60% MVC force of isometric contraction of elbow flexors with 90° elbow joint angl

Severity of contraction-induced injury is affected by velocity only during stretches of large strain.

Our purpose was to investigate the effect of velocity of stretch on contraction-induced injury to whole skeletal muscles. Single stretches provide an effective method for studying factors that initiate contraction-induced injury. We tested the null hypothesis that the severity of injury is not dependent on the velocity of the stretch. From the plateau of maximum isometric contractions, extensor digitorum longus muscles of mice were administered single stretches in situ of 30--50% strain relative to muscle fiber length (L(f)) at rates of 1--16 L(f)/s. The magnitude of injury was represented by

Perceived Discomfort is Decreased After Repeated Bouts of Isometric Handgrip Exercise With and Without Blood Flow Restriction.

Blood flow restricted exercise appears to be more discomforting than the same exercise without blood flow restriction. Changes in discomfort have not been investigated following repeated bouts of isometric exercise. It is possible that the isometric contractions may further trap metabolites resulting in greater discomfort. The purpose was to investigate the effects of six weeks of isometric handgrip exercise on perceived discomfort and willingness to continue with that form of exercise. 135 participants trained three times a week for six-weeks. The training consisted of four sets of 2-min low-

Effects of opiates during baroreceptor and ergoreceptor induced changes in blood pressure.

Various opioids were used to investigate the role they might play in the cardiovascular responses to fatiguing isometric contractions. Changes in blood pressure were measured in cats anaesthetised with alpha-chloralose. Fatiguing isometric contractions of the hind limb muscles (ergoreceptor activation) were generated using a microprocessor controlled stimulator (50 Hz, 0.2 ms, 200-800 mV). Baroreceptor inactivation was elicited by carotid artery occlusion. Muscle contraction caused an increase in mean arterial pressure of 51 (SEM 12) mm Hg and carotid occlusion an increase of 56(9) mm Hg above

Increased resistance towards fatigability in patients with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

PURPOSE: In facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) fatigue is a major complaint. We aimed to investigate whether during isometric sustained elbow flexions, performance fatigability indexes differ in patients with FSHD with respect to healthy controls. METHODS: Seventeen patients with FSHD and seventeen healthy controls performed two isometric flexions of the dominant biceps brachii at 20% of their maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) for 2 min and then at 60% MVC until exhaustion. Muscle weakness was characterized as a percentage of predicted values. Maximal voluntary strength, enduranc

Vastus lateralis muscle architecture, quality, and stiffness are determinants of maximal performance in athletes?

Understanding intrinsic muscular adaptations more deeply can help clarify their relationships with sports performance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine if vastus lateralis muscle architecture, quality and stiffness can explain knee extensor maximal torque and countermovement and squat jump performance of athletes. One hundred and two athletes were evaluated based on the architecture, quality and stiffness of the vastus lateralis at rest. Furthermore, the knee extensor maximal voluntary isometric contraction and maximal concentric contraction at 60°/s and vertical jumps counter

Is the coactivation of biceps femoris during isometric knee extension affected by adiposity in healthy young humans?

This study aimed to verify if the level of biceps femoris antagonist activity measured during isometric knee extension was affected by the individual degree of adiposity in 14 young healthy subjects of both genders aged between 18 and 24. Surface EMG signals were recorded from the biceps femoris muscle of the dominant leg during isometric knee extension at three levels of voluntary contraction: maximum (MVC), 80% MVC and 200 N, respectively. In addition, whole-body percentage of fat, volume of the thigh and skinfold thickness below the electrodes were achieved. Biceps femoris coactivation valu

Spastic co-contraction: A misdirected central command.

OBJECTIVE: Antagonist co-contraction triggered by voluntary agonist command in spastic paresis is poorly understood. Using an isometric ankle paradigm designed to minimize movement-related stretch reflexes, we aimed to characterize the severity, modulation, and neurophysiological origin of spastic co-contraction. METHODS: Thirteen subjects with chronic hemi/paraparesis (n = 14 limbs) were seated with the ankle at 90° dorsiflexion, and performed submaximal then maximal isometric voluntary ankle plantar- and dorsiflexion efforts, with the knee flexed then extended (gastrocnemii slack then stret

Carbonic anhydrase inhibition and calcium transients in soleus fibers.

We simultaneously measured cytoplasmic Ca2+ transients using Fura-2 and isometric force in rat soleus fiber bundles. In the presence of the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, chlorzolamide, we observed a decreased amplitude and retarded decay of the Ca2+ signal. This corresponded with a decreased isometric force and a retarded muscle relaxation. We conclude that muscle carbonic anhydrase participates in excitation-contraction coupling, possibly by rapidly providing protons that are exchanged for Ca2+ across the sarcoplasmic reticulum membrane.

The acute effects of bodyweight suspension exercise on muscle activation and muscular fatigue.

This investigation examined effects of two exercise modes (barbell, BB; bodyweight suspension, BWS) on muscle activation, resistance load, and fatigue. During session one, nine resistance-trained males completed an elbow flexion one-repetition maximum (1RM). During sessions two and three, subjects completed standing biceps curls to fatigue at 70% 1RM utilizing a randomized exercise mode. Surface electromyography (sEMG) recorded muscle activation of the biceps brachii, triceps brachii, anterior deltoid, posterior deltoid, rectus abdominis, and erector spinae. BWS resistance load was measured us
