Systemic isosporosis, also called atoxoplasmosis or visceral coccidiosis, is a disease that affects birds in general. Pathogenesis of systemic isosporosis and its etiologic agent have not been well characterized, but taxonomically Atoxoplasma is currently considered a junior objective synonym of Isospora. The present report aimed to describe pathological and molecular findings of systemic isosporosis in captive green-winged saltators (Saltator similis) from the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil. In a commercial breeding facility eleven birds with two to nine months of age died from 2015 to 2016.

Coccidia infection in Chaffinch population in Mazurian Lakeland was studied. Birds were caught in mist nets from June to September and droppings were collected after defecation. Prevalence of infection was high -80% of Chaffinches excreted oocysts of Isospora sp. Intensity of oocysts' production varied depending on the time of the day and therefore coccidia prevalence in Chaffinch should be best detectable in birds caught after midday.

Systemic isosporosis, previously atoxoplasmosis, is a significant cause of mortality in juvenile passerine birds. Recommended treatment regimens are empiric and vary in efficacy. The goal of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of ponazuril for treatment of systemic isosporosis. Ponazuril, diluted with water to create an oral suspension (50 mg/ml), was administered (100 mg/kg) to 72 European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) by a single dose via direct oral gavage (n = 24), a single dose injected into superworm larvae (Zophobas morio; n = 24), or a daily dose mixed

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review focuses on recent epidemiological and diagnostic advances in cystoisosporiasis and cyclosporiasis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Continuous outbreaks of these parasites occur worldwide. Sporadic cases in the United States are travel acquired, but also domestically acquired. New molecular diagnostic methods allow for accurate early diagnosis in humans, and might potentially decrease the burden of disease by detecting these parasites in vehicles of transmission.
SUMMARY: Better understanding of the epidemiology of Cyclospora cayetanensis and to a less extent to Cystois

Passerines are frequently parasitized by coccidia, especially species of the genus Isospora, with extra-intestinal stages that can be highly pathogenic causing serious clinical damage in young birds. Whilst there is still no effective treatment to completely clear isosporoid coccidia with extra-intestinal stages from a host species, our results showed that prolonged treatment with toltrazuril (BAYER AG, Leverkusen, Germany) can decrease the oocysts in faeces and thus reduce the extra-intestinal phase of the infection. The toltrazuril treatment is therefore probably indirectly effective against

Ophidians host a wide range of pathogens, including many parasite species, some of which may be of public health concern because they can infect other animal species and humans. Herpetariums house snakes in captivity as part of ex-situ conservation initiatives aimed at preserving threatened species. However, stress, immunosuppression, and limited space increase the risk of parasitic infections, including zoonotic diseases. Here, we detect the presence of intestinal parasites in ophidian species housed under conditions of captivity. Twenty specimens representing sixteen species were examined us

New Zealand native passerines are hosts to a large variety of gastrointestinal parasites, including coccidia. Coccidian parasites are generally host-specific, obligate intracellular protozoan parasites. In passerine birds, members of the genus Isospora are most common. Under natural conditions, these parasites seldom pose a threat, but stressors such as quarantine for translocation, overcrowding, or habitat changes may cause an infection outbreak that can severely affect wild populations. Although coccidia are important pathogens and have caused mortalities in kiwi (Apteryx spp.) and hihi (Not

Within lizards, chameleons (family Chamaeleonidae) represent a distinctive and highly specialized clade of insectivorous reptiles. Chameleons have become more popular as reptile pets in recent years worldwide, due to their feasible husbandry and attractiveness. To date, not only reptile pet numbers but also health-compromising endoparasite infections are rising. In the current study, we analyzed a total of 670 faecal samples of 25 different chameleon species kept as pet animals all over Germany. In total, 223 animals (33%) were found to harbor gastrointestinal parasites. In total, 10 different

Cryptosporidiosis and isosporiasis are intestinal infections caused by the protozoan parasites Cryptosporidium parvum and Isospora belli, respectively. HIV infection and other immunodeficiency diseases predispose human subjects to severe and prolonged cryptosporidiosis. There is also evidence that HIV infection predisposes to chronic isosporiasis. Strongyloidiasis is caused by a nematode worm, Strongyloides stercoralis. Administration of corticosteroids to patients with chronic low-grade S. stercoralis infection can trigger a fulminant, life-threatening form of strongyloidiasis.

The epidemiology and clinical presentation of enteric infections are discussed in this article. These include bacterial, viral, and parasitic illnesses, and are associated with the increasing popularity of drinking unpasteurized milk; eating raw fish and shellfish; consuming undercooked pork, poultry, and eggs; and having contact with pets. Salmonella, Campylobacter jejuni, Vibrio, Yersinia, Aeromonas, Edwardsiella, hepatitis A virus, Norwalk virus, Anisakis, Eustrongylides, Diphyllobothrium, Nanophyetus, Isospora, and Cryptosporidium are included. The importance of preventing these increasing

We report a severe case of diarrhea in a 62-year-old female HIV-negative patient from whom Giardia lamblia and Isospora belli were isolated. Because unusual and opportunistic infections should be considered as criteria for further analysis of immunological status, laboratory investigations led to a diagnosis of common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). This is the first reported case of isosporiasis in a patient with CVID and illustrates the importance of being aware of a possible link, particularly in relation to primary immunodeficiency.

A HIV seropositive patient with chronic diarrheic syndrome, in which oocysts of Isospora belli were detected in feces by the modified technique of Ziehl-Neelsen was studied. Other coproparasitological techniques were applied and cultures were applied made with negative results. Any other infectious origin was excluded from the picture. The patient was treated with 2 tablets of Co-trimoxazole (trimethoprin 80 mg, sulphamethoxazole 400 mg) every 6 hours for ten days, with referral of the symptoms.

Systemic isoporosis (atoxoplasmosis) is a disease caused by apicomplexan parasites of the genus Isospora, with systemic distribution due to an extraintestinal part of the cycle. In this report we described the gross and histological lesions of systemic isosporosis in 15 passeriform birds from three different species: Sporophila maximiliani (great-billed seed finch), Serinus canaria (island canary), and Saltator similis (green-winged saltator), all captive birds originating from different properties in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Between 2017 and 2022, 15 passerines were sent to the Veterinary School

It is generally considered that we have already been through with problems caused by various kinds of parasites which had once raged throughout the country. On the contrary to our common concept, we occasionally encounter some kinds of parasites in a laboratory as well as in clinical fields, which have become unfamiliar to us in these days. Parasitic diseases are in the first place, proper and limited to certain local regions, but the present situation has been greatly changed. Nowadays, specific parasites are no longer limited to polluted areas, but also they can be detected in any part of th

We investigated 245 diarrheal stool specimens from HIV-positive subjects between January 2003 and December 2006 to determine the etiological role of coproparasites. Parasitic etiology was observed in 91 (37.1%) cases. Isospora belli (26.1%) was the most common parasite followed by Entameba histolytica/dispar (3.3%), Cryptosporidium spp. (2.9%), Giardia intestinalis (1.6%), and Strongyloides stercoralis (1.2%). Interesting trends of significant increase in the number of cases of I. belli and decline in Cryptosporidium spp. were observed during the study period.

Cats have an important and different place due to their close relationships with humans. Since most of the parasites they carry are zoonotic, it is important to detect them. According to the research, Dipylidium caninum, Joyeuxiella pasqualei, Toxocara spp., Toxascaris leonina, Giardia spp., Isospora spp., and Toxoplasma sp. were found to be higher in cats compared to other parasites. It has been determined that scabies and flea infestations are common as ectoparasites. This review aims to present the reported parasites and their prevalence rates in cats in Türkiye.

The clinical, laboratory and therapeutic data of patients with diarrhea in Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody positive, immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals were studied especially to look for prevalence of intestinal coccidiosis. During a study period of one decade, Isospora belli were identified in the stool samples of seven children with diarrhea. Diarrhea persisted for a little longer period in HIV-seropositive children compared to sero-negatives but the clinical picture did not differ significantly in either HIV infected or HIV uninfected individuals.
