A clinical radiographic and histologic revaluation of a 10 years sample of surgically treated cysts of the jaws, with special emphasis on keratocysts.

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the histologic features of the cysts as regards their radiographic and clinical aspects, in order to assess the accuracy of the diagnosis, the appropriateness of the treatment and the reliability of the follow-up. METHODS: A sample of 173 cysts of the jaws was reviewed in accordance with the 1992 WHO histological classification. RESULTS: Of these cysts, 77.44% were inflammatory, 12.71% follicular and 8.67% keratocysts. The cysts were slightly more frequently located in the mandible (52.60%) than in the maxilla (47.39%) and they affected men more freq

Gene-Confirmed Primary Aneurysmal Bone Cysts of the Jaws: A Qualitative Systematic Review of Clinical, Radiologic, and Histopathological Features.

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is rarely a clinical diagnosis on first take; hence, data pertaining to primary ABC assists in differentiating lesions from related pathologies. The cases of primary ABCs were managed by curettage even with extensive cortical plate expansion, whereas secondary ABCs were managed according to primary pathology. The present review retrospectively studies the case reports of primary ABCs affecting the jaws, reported from the year 2000 (the time when USP6 to CDH 11 gene translocation was detected) to date, to identify cases that were diagnostically confirmed with gene ana

Secondary jaw aneurysmal bone cyst (JABC)--a possible misnomer? A review of literature on secondary JABCs, their pathogenesis and oncogenesis.

CONTEXT: Aneurysmal bone cysts are rare pseudocysts, commonly seen in long bones and vertebral column. Although a well described and reported lesion, many misconceptions still prevail regarding their etiopathogenesis. Many of the reported cases of jaw aneurysmal bone cysts (JABC) present with another bone pathology. AIMS: The purpose of this review was to evaluate the incidence of neoplastic lesions occurring simultaneously with a JABC (in contrast to primary JABCs). Any pathogenetic and oncogenetic association between primary and secondary jaw ABCs has been reviewed and discussed. SETTINGS

Evaluation of Bone Healing After Enucleation of Jaw Cysts Using Region of Interest (ROI)-Based Gray Value Analysis on Panoramic Radiographs: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to evaluate bone healing after enucleation of cystic jaw lesions using region of interest (ROI)-based gray value analysis on panoramic radiographs. Additionally, this study aims to quantitatively assess early postoperative changes in the lesion area and to determine whether grayscale values approach those of the contralateral healthy bone. Furthermore, it seeks to investigate the applicability of panoramic radiography as a reliable and accessible tool for objective radiographic follow-up in routine clinical practice. Therefore, grayscale analysis provides

A clinical study on the preservation of pulp sensitivity in affected teeth with jaw cysts using concentrated growth factor: a retrospective Cross-sectional study.

Jaw cysts commonly affect the oral and maxillofacial region. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Concentrated Growth Factor (CGF) application during jaw cyst surgery on postoperative pulp sensitivity changes in affected teeth. This retrospective cross-sectional study included fifty-one patients with jaw cysts, categorized into four groups based on the postoperative filling material used Group A (CGF), Group B (CGF + Bio-Gene), Group C (Bio-Gene) and Group D (Control). Clinical follow-up data, including electric pulp testing results, tooth color changes, gingival healing status, and radi

The use of augmented reality navigation technology in combination with endoscopic surgery for the treatment of an odontogenic cyst of the upper jaw: A technical report.

PURPOSE: This report presents the first known use of a rigid endoscope with augmented reality technology for the removal of an odontogenic cyst that penetrated the maxillary sinus and illustrates its practical use in a patient. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the preoperative period, cone-beam computed tomography was performed in a specially designed marker holder frame, and the contours of the cyst and the nearest anatomical formations were segmented in the 3D Slicer program. During the operation, a marker was installed on the patient's head, as well as on the tip of the endoscope, which made it p

Volumetric Radiological Analysis of Bone Regeneration After Jaw Cyst Enucleation Without Grafting Material: A Retrospective Pilot Study.

Introduction A jaw cyst is a pathological lesion that can affect both the maxillary and mandibular bones. The treatment of choice is complete surgical removal by enucleation. The healing process after enucleation has often been assessed using two-dimensional methods, but a three-dimensional approach may offer a more accurate evaluation. This study aims to assess whether the preoperative volume of a cyst influences the shrinkage rate after enucleation. It also explores the impact of other variables, such as age, gender, location, and defect configuration, on the shrinkage rate. Methods Preopera

[AConvLSTM U-Net: a multi-scale jaw cyst segmentation model based on bidirectional dense connection and attention mechanism].

OBJECTIVES: We propose a multi-scale jaw cyst segmentation model, AConvLSTM U-Net, which is based on bidirectional dense connections and attention mechanisms to achieve accurate automatic segmentation of mandibular cyst images. METHODS: A dataset consisting of 2592 jaw cyst images was used. AConvLSTM U-Net designs a MBC on the encoding path to enhance feature extraction capabilities. A DPD was used to connect the encoder and decoder, and a bidirectional ConvLSTM was introduced in the jump connection to obtain rich semantic information. A decoding block based on scSE was then used on the decod

"Dry Tap" Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy as a Diagnostic Clue in Cyst-like Juvenile Jaw Lesions Mimicking Dentigerous Cysts on Panoramic Radiography and Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.

Pediatric odontogenic tumors are rare but are frequently overlooked because they often mimic simple cysts on routine radiographic examinations. The radiographic appearance on panoramic imaging and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) frequently does not correlate with the true biological nature of these lesions. On CBCT, classic odontogenic tumors often demonstrate mixed radiolucent-radiopaque patterns with ill-defined borders, internal calcifications, septations, or other structural features. The diagnostic challenge arises when an odontogenic tumor mimics a unilateral, well-defined radioluce

Basement membrane-type heparan sulfate proteoglycan (perlecan) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) are co-localized in granulation tissues: a possible pathogenesis of cholesterol granulomas in jaw cysts.

BACKGROUND: As perlecan contains a low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor-like repeats in the second domain of its core protein, LDL may be bound to perlecan, which is rich in granulation tissues. We wanted to study if this is the case in the cyst wall of radicular cysts, which are often associated with cholesterol granuloma. METHODS: Thirty-three specimens of radicular cyst with cholesterol granulomas were immunohistochemically examined for comparative localizations of perlecan, apoprotein B (apo B), and oxidized LDL (Ox-LDL), and for mRNA expression levels for perlecan. RESULTS: Myxoid or

Empowerment-Enhanced Perioperative Recovery Pathway After Jaw Cyst Enucleation: A Target Trial Emulation Using Propensity-Score Overlap Weighting.

The authors evaluated whether an empowerment-enhanced perioperative recovery pathway was associated with early postoperative recovery after jaw cyst enucleation and whether disease cognition and anxiety mediated this association. This pragmatic target trial emulation (an observational design that mimics a randomized trial) included 134 patients treated between January 2024 and January 2025. Patients received usual care or the empowerment-enhanced pathway. Propensity-score overlap weighting (PSOW) was used to balance baseline covariates. The primary outcome was time to masticatory function reco

Measurement of interleukin 1 alpha and 1 beta (IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta) in human cystic lesions of the jaw. Implications for the pathogenesis of radicular cysts.

Human radicular cystic tissue of jaws was found to contain between 0.823 pg/mg to 18.026 pg/mg interleukin 1 beta and from 0.34 pg/mg to 0.708 pg/mg interleukin 1 alpha. No IL-1 beta and alpha could be found in specimens from healthy patients. A finding which may be extremely relevant in cystic growth and episodes of alveolar bone resorption around the cystic lesion.

A rare case of a patient with PPP syndrome presenting pancreatic pseudocysts, panniculitis, and symptoms of polyarthritis. A radicular cyst of the upper jaw could be another manifestation of the syndrome.

In rare cases, pancreatic enzymes can enter the bloodstream and cause fat necrosis in the bone and tissue leading to a disorder called pancreatitis, panniculitis, and polyarthritis syndrome. Clinicians should have this syndrome in mind when treating patients with pancreatitis.
