How we acquire suturing skills for laparoscopic hepaticojejunostomy.

Laparoscopic choledochal cyst excision and hepaticojejunostomy is a representative surgical procedure requiring laparoscopic suturing including needle driving and knot tying. Laparoscopic needle driving and knot tying is a highly technically demanding skill, especially in small infants and children. We developed a laparoscopic hepaticojejunostomy simulator for training. This simulator was developed for a 1-year-old infant body size based on computed tomography data and reproduced a pneumoperitoneum condition based on 3D scanner data of the clinical situation. Surgeon in training (SITs) of our

The effect of shift work on body mass index: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

CONTEXT: Shift work involves working outside the standard working hours of 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday and may include working evening, night, weekend, or rotating shift patterns. Since shift workers sleep less and their circadian rhythms are disrupted, they are reported to have higher body weight than day workers. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aims to determine whether shift workers (SW) are more prone to higher body mass index (BMI) than their day workers (DW) counterparts. It also addresses the question of whether the duration of shift work exposure, sex, or occupational type affect BMI

Occupational respiratory cancer and exposure to asbestos: a case-control study in a cohort of workers in the electricity and gas industry.

Cancers of the pleura, lung, and larynx between 1978 and 1989 among active male workers of Electricité de France-Gaz de France were studied in association with asbestos exposure using a case-control design nested within the cohort of workers of the company. The cohort included about 1,400,000 person-years, corresponding to a mean of 117,000 men per year. Exposure to asbestos and to some potential occupational confounders selected among agents from groups I, IIa, and IIb of the International Agency for Research on Cancer was assessed by a job-exposure matrix specific to the company. During the

Empowering Ukrainian healthcare and humanitarian aid workers: cocreating a peer support staff wellbeing curriculum.

In February 2022 Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine. National aid workers responded to the crisis, at the risk of their own wellbeing. This case study details the cocreation of a peer support intervention by a global public health non-profit working with national staff in Ukraine. As a first step in peer support wellbeing curriculum development, an online survey was developed and administered for 530 Ukrainian healthcare and humanitarian aid workers. The survey resulted in 300 valid responses, for a 57% response rate. Top stressors included: personal safety and security (43%), concerns for

Systems thinking on the gendered impacts of COVID-19 in Bangladesh: A systematic review.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected women and threatens to overturn four decades of progress in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5: Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment. To better grasp the key areas of concern that gender inequality exists, gender studies and sex-disaggregated evidence are required. Using the PRISMA technique, this review paper is the first attempt to present a comprehensive and current picture of the gendered dimensions of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh regarding economic well-being, resource endowments, and agency. This study found that women wer

Do children's labour market experiences affect the mental health of ageing parents?

In this study we investigate the influence of adult children's adverse labour market experiences on the mental health of their ageing parents. Taking a life course perspective, we examine the trajectory of adult children over nearly a decade following graduation from a school or university. We utilise data from Swedish registers linked to the Västerbotten Intervention Programme (VIP), a survey that provides detailed information about health outcomes in northern Sweden. We utilise sequence analysis and cluster analysis to categorise labour market trajectories of adult children. Next, we use lin

The Mediating Role of Social and Environmental Determinants of Health in the Association Between Race and Preterm Birth Risk.

Objective: To evaluate the mediating role of social and environmental determinants of health (SEDH) in the relationship between self-identified race and preterm birth risk. Methods: Data on birth outcomes and five broad domains of SEDH were obtained from the Pregnancy, Race, Environment, Genes study, a prospective cohort of pregnant women (50% Black American) in Richmond, Virginia. Configural consistency across racial groups for SEDH domains assessed via multiple indicators was evaluated using unidimensional confirmatory factor models. Mediation models tested the extent to which individual var

Predicting Employment in the Mental Health Treatment Study: Do Client Factors Matter?

For people with psychiatric disabilities, demographic characteristics and measures of clinical status are often used to allocate scarce employment services. This study examined a battery of potential client predictors of competitive employment, testing the hypothesis that evidence-based supported employment would mitigate the negative effects of poor work history, uncontrolled symptoms, substance abuse, and other client factors. In a secondary analysis of 2055 unemployed Social Security Disability Insurance beneficiaries with schizophrenia or affective disorders, we examined 20 baseline client

Faculty encounters with uncivil nursing students: an overview.

The critical incident technique (CIT) was used to explore faculty experiences with uncivil nursing students. Twenty-one nursing faculty with various years of experience in teaching were interviewed to ascertain what they considered critical incidents of uncivil encounters with nursing students and what effect those encounters had on them. Thirty-six encounters were described by the faculty. Of the 36 encounters, 33 occurred with individual students and 3 occurred with groups of students. Twenty-three encounters occurred in the context of poor student performance requiring constructive criticis

Molecular Classification in a Cohort of Occupational Dermatological Patients: Diagnostic Results and Course of Ability to Work and Sick Leave Over Two Years.

Hand eczema is the most common occupational skin disease (OSD), often leading to sick leave or job termination. Standard diagnostic procedures are often ambiguous. Molecular classification has been described to improve differentiation between eczema and psoriasis, which is the most common differential diagnosis. Since 2020, a cohort of 287 patients with suspected, occupational hand and/or foot dermatoses (eczema or psoriasis) has been established in Germany. The current analysis focuses on descriptive results on the days of absence from work, occupational retention and legal recognition of OSD

Essential, Yet Precarious, Mistreated, Sick and Medicalized: A Sequential Explanatory Mixed-Methods Study on Homecare Aides in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Homecare aides (HCAs) are professional non-family caregivers, who support dependent individuals to live at home with dignity; yet in Spain they remain understudied and vulnerable, often facing precarious working conditions. We aimed to characterize HCAs' employment, living conditions, health, and exposure to workplace violence and harassment, considering migrant background as a key axis of inequality. METHODS: We conducted a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study. Quantitative data came from an online respondent-driven sampling survey of 324 HCAs across Spain, with stratified

Association between uncertainty regarding right-to-stay and mental health in unaccompanied and separated migrant children (UASC) reaching adulthood: findings from France.

PURPOSE: There is substantial evidence suggesting high levels of mental health problems in unaccompanied and separated children (UASC). However, there is less focus on the first years of adulthood characterised by increased vulnerability and fear of expulsion. We aimed to describe the mental health of UASC on reaching adulthood, and how this was affected by uncertainty regarding their right-to-stay in France. METHODS: One hundred and ten youth aged 18-22 were recruited via child protection reception centres. We administered the Patient Health Questionnaire somatic (PHQ-15), anxiety (GAD-7) an

The Professional-Volunteer Paradox: Transforming Lived Experience into a Sense of Purpose in Dutch Oncology Patient Advocacy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Transforming lived experience into a sense of purpose through patient advocacy in oncology research and policy development is increasingly demanded. However, the long-term sustainability of patient advocates - who formally operate as unpaid volunteers - remains under-researched. This study explores the motivational drivers and structural hurdles characterising the field of Dutch oncology patient advocacy to identify the prerequisites for a sustainable patient voice in oncology research and policy development. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study among 16 Dutch o

Seeing beyond the algorithm: artificial intelligence and the enduring role of the radiologist.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly emerged as a transformative force in radiology, offering enhanced diagnostic accuracy, workflow optimization, and the potential to alleviate rising imaging demands. As radiology remains inherently dependent on pattern recognition and high-volume data interpretation, it represents an ideal domain for AI integration. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the clinical impact of AI across multiple dimensions of radiologic practice, including diagnostic performance, workflow efficiency, patient perspectives, and trainee education. AI systems
