OBJECTIVES: Identify if Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) symptoms vary by measured biomechanical exposures.
METHODS: A nested prospective cohort within a large, multicenter, 8-year cohort study. The CTS case definition was tingling/numbness in 2+ median nerve-served digits plus a nerve conduction study consistent with CTS. Workers were assigned to: (1) low (strain index [SI] less than or equal to 6.1), and (2) high (SI more than 6.1) job groups.
RESULTS: Among 1201 workers, 106 had CTS. Those in the high SI group became and remained symptom-free for at least 3 months, faster than the low SI grou

BACKGROUND: The aim was to assess the persistence of rotator cuff syndrome (RCS) in workers and to study associations with personal and work-related factors, job change, exposure change and treatment.
METHODS: At baseline, 274 workers suffered from RCS, of whom 150 were followed up. Three groups were constituted: (1) a RCS recovery group, (2) a shoulder pain without RCS group, and (3) a RCS without recovery group. We studied the differences between groups (1) and (3) because of the low number of workers in group (2).
RESULTS: Recovery occurred in 61.5% of men and 51.4% of women. Factors rela

In 1984 we initiated a study of factors associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in industrial workers by using a case definition based on both symptoms and electrophysiologic findings. Medical history, lifestyle factors, and symptoms were assessed by interview, and electrodiagnostic studies were used to measure median nerve function. Job tasks were classified by both interview and direct observation of work activities. Follow-up evaluations were conducted in 1989 and 1994-1995. The analytic sample consisted of 111 women and 145 men free of CTS in 1984 who were examined at both subsequent

Down syndrome is the most prevalent genetic condition contributing to intellectual disability. Advancements in medical care have significantly increased the life expectancy of people with this condition, making employment a vital component for independent living and quality of life. The aim of this study was to examine the current literature on the employability and employment experiences of individuals with Down syndrome, focusing on the evolution of the employment rate and factors influencing employment such as cognitive and personal factors, societal attitudes, challenges, and effective sup

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease is a group of conditions caused by anomalous hemoglobin that predisposes people to some clinical syndromes. Because of these recurrent syndromes, patients have difficulty finding and, often, keeping a job.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of sickle cell disease on the job situation of people with the condition.
METHODS: Thirty-two working-age people with sickle cell disease were recruited using the snowball sampling method and underwent semistructured interviews for demographic, socioeconomic, and clinical data collection.
RESULTS: Only 28.1% of the inter

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Nurses have a higher risk of metabolic syndrome due to high work pressure and irregular lifestyle. Early recognition of metabolic syndrome is essential to prevent related complications and improve nurse health.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was used to collect valid questionnaire data of 900 nurses. Univariate analysis and multivariate Logistic regression analysis were used to screen the key variables. Logistic regression, random forest, XGBoost, support vector machine and neural ne

Background: Return to work (RTW) after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or acute heart failure (HF) is a pivotal outcome reflecting functional recovery and quality of life (QoL). While survival after cardiac events has improved through reperfusion and guideline-directed pharmacotherapy, sustainable RTW depends on an integrated set of clinical, psychological, social, and occupational determinants. Objective: This study aimed to synthesize and expand the evidence on predictors of RTW, delineate practical workload-matching rules using METs and CPET, and position multidisciplinary cardiac rehabilitat

BACKGROUND: Type III Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS III) is a collagen defect and manifests as hypermobile joints, which cause dislocations, and fragile skin, which causes scars. There are three clinical-ultrasound (US) stages.
OBJECTIVES: Diagnostic techniques are described that permit assessment of cutaneous and phalangeal impairment, and job fitness of patients with EDS III.
METHODS: The Beighton scoring system (Bss) and the ultrasound test (US) of the skin and phalanxes (with Sonora Logic 400 MD and 7.5-10 MHz probes) were used in the diagnosis of 50 patients. Dislocations and scars were co

Between 9000 and 14000 people have systemic sclerosis (ScS) in France. The work is often affected. Our study aims to assess the frequency of professional difficulties (DP) of scleroderma patients, identify these DP, the symptoms involved and the solutions used. A heteroquestionnaire was offered to scleroderma patients the Lille University Hospital. Data were cross-checked with the clinical database of the National Observatory of scleroderma patients. We used 104 questionnaires of which 84% are women. A total of 62.5%, (95% CI [52.5 to 71.8]) patients had experienced DP related to SSc, 55% repo

Fibromyalgia is a common pain syndrome treated by physicians of many disciplines and presents with many co-morbidities. We reviewed the complexities in assessing disabilities in fibromyalgia patients and the complex interrelationships between patients, their working places, and the medical community regarding preserving productivity. Flexibility is essential to keep the patients functional and productive. Job loss is costly to both society and patients and joint measures are needed to prevent unemployment.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) affects up to 25% of children and 10% of adults in Western countries. When severe or recurrent infections and exceedingly elevated serum IgE levels occur in AD patients, an inborn error of immunity (IEI) may be suspected. The International Union of Immunological Societies classification lists variants in different genes responsible for so-called Hyper-IgE syndromes. Diagnosing an underlying IEI may influence treatment strategies.
METHODS: Clinical and diagnostic workup of family members are presented including a detailed immunological description and histolo

Kidney disease due to Aspergillus fumigatus is a rare finding in hyper-IgE syndrome. We report a patient with autosomal dominant hyper-IgE syndrome, recurrent pneumonia, and acute necrosuppurative pyelonephritis caused by Aspergillus fumigatus with a fatal outcome. We emphasize the severity and the difficulties in the management of renal complications that could be limiting the survival of these patients.

A 46-year-old man afflicted with recurring infection and bone fracture consulted our hospital because of general malaise and increase of sputum. He was given a diagnosis of chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis, and underwent right lower lobectomy. Six months later, chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis become exacerbated. Slightly improvement was obtained with voriconazole. Two months later, this disease become reactivated, and slightly improved with itraconazole and amphotericin B. Subsequently, hyper-IgE syndrome was diagnosed in him by pathognomonic face, recurring infection an

We report widely disseminated molluscum contagiosum that occurred in a 9-year-old boy secondary to hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome, a primary immunodeficiency disorder. Cutaneous examination revealed numerous, widespread, skin-colored to translucent, firm, umbilicated papules of varying sizes. They were distributed throughout the perineal and gluteal areas and bilaterally over his lower limbs. A biopsy specimen from his skin lesion demonstrated lobulated epidermal growth that consisted of keratinocytes with large intracytoplasmic eosinophilic inclusion bodies and a central crater. These finding

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy accounting for 90% of similar disorders, occurring in 3.8% of the population, common in adults aged 40-60 years, and is associated with an average 32 lost days of work and lost productivity. In addition to occupational exposure, there are several common chronic disorders that can preclude CTS, obesity, diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, metabolic syndrome, and thyroid disorder, to name a few. Therefore, it is important for the primary care provider to have knowledge in this syndrome. The purpose of the artic

In spite of the good or excellent long-term results in 60% to 80% of the cases reported in the literature, the efficacy of the less invasive percutaneous nucleolysis in the treatment of therapy-resistant lumbar compression of the nerve root in patients with lumbar disk protrusion still remains controversial. On the one hand, there is discussion about the actual effectiveness of the enzymes injected and their local activity in bringing about the desired long-lasting nerve-root decompression. On the other hand, the presumed advantage of he method is questioned. It is said that postoperative morb

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a peripheral mononeuropathy caused by compression of the median nerve at the wrist and has been reported in workers who perform repetitive movements that involve actions of sustained grasping of vibrating objects. We carried out a cross-sectional analytical study in March 2018 to identify the factors associated with the CTS among workers of agro-export companies in Ica-Peru. CTS confirmation in our study was based on having at least 1 positive screening test (Tinel or Phalen) and a presumptive result of CTS by the Kamath and Stothard Questionnaire. We carried ou

Both patients and psychiatric residents are seen to exhibit symptoms as the end of the resident's job rotation approaches and the need arises to transfer the patient's care to a new therapist. These symptoms, collectively known as the "Transfer Syndrome", are examined. An approach to modify these problems is outlined. Finally, the need for repeated transfers of individual patients between psychiatric residents is reviewed in the light of educational necessities.
