Comparing third-party responsibility with intention attribution: An fMRI investigation of moral judgment.

Neuroimaging studies demonstrate that moral responsibility judgments activate the social cognition network, presumably reflecting mentalising processes. Conceptually, establishing an agent's intention is a sub-process of responsibility judgment. However, the relationship between both processes on a neural level is poorly understood. To date, neural correlates of responsibility and intention judgments have not been compared directly. The present fMRI study compares neural activation elicited by third-party judgments of responsibility and intention in response to animated pictorial stimuli showi

Evaluation of the Impact of Optical Coherence Tomography on Pediatrician Otologic Examination Judgment.

Accurate diagnosis of otitis media is imperative to judicious antibiotic prescription. Visualization of the tympanic membrane and accurate identification of middle ear effusion with standard otoscopy is inherently challenging in pediatrics, especially in the youngest children who are most at risk for otitis media. With the average diagnostic accuracy among primary care physicians of 50% and accurate identification of normal tympanic membrane versus acute otitis media versus otitis media with effusion ranging from 30% to 84% among pediatricians, there is great opportunity for diagnostic improve

Methylphenidate modifies activity in the prefrontal and parietal cortex accelerating the time judgment.

Methylphenidate produces its effects via actions on cortical areas involved with attention and working memory, which have a direct role in time estimation judgment tasks. In particular, the prefrontal and parietal cortex has been the target of several studies to understand the effect of methylphenidate on executive functions and time interval perception. However, it has not yet been studied whether acute administration of methylphenidate influences performance in time estimation task and the changes in alpha band absolute power in the prefrontal and parietal cortex. The current study investiga

Handedness change after dominant side amputation: Evaluation from a hand laterality judgment task.

Amputation of the dominant hand forces patients to use their non-dominant hand exclusively. Whether this chronic forced use of the non-dominant hand would affect the handedness preference remains an open question. In this study, the handedness preference in amputees was evaluated using a hand laterality judgment task by comparing recognition speeds of their lost hand and remaining hand. A handedness index was defined as lateralization between response times to the left hand and the right hand. Healthy controls responded faster to the pictures of dominant hand than that of non-dominant hand, wh

Acute administration of lithium, but not valproate, modulates cognitive judgment bias in rats.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Both valproic acid (VPA) and lithium (LI) are well-established treatments for therapy of intense and sustained mood shifts, which are characteristics of affective disorders, such as bipolar disorder (BP). As mood and cognitive judgment bias have been found to be strongly interrelated, the present study investigated, in an animal model, whether acute treatment with VPA or LI could affect cognitive judgment bias. METHODS: To accomplish this goal, two groups of rats received single injections of either VPA or LI after initial behavioral training and were subsequently te

Pushing moral buttons: the interaction between personal force and intention in moral judgment.

In some cases people judge it morally acceptable to sacrifice one person's life in order to save several other lives, while in other similar cases they make the opposite judgment. Researchers have identified two general factors that may explain this phenomenon at the stimulus level: (1) the agent's intention (i.e. whether the harmful event is intended as a means or merely foreseen as a side-effect) and (2) whether the agent harms the victim in a manner that is relatively "direct" or "personal". Here we integrate these two classes of findings. Two experiments examine a novel personalness/direct

2002 ACC/AHA guideline versus clinician judgment as diagnostic tests for chest pain.

PURPOSE: Hospital admissions for chest pain are frequent and costly. The use of objective criteria to determine the need for hospitalization may save money. Here we compare the 2002 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) guidelines for the management of patients with unstable angina and nonST-segment elevation myocardial infarction to clinical judgment as diagnostic tests to predict which patients with chest pain will develop positive cardiac troponin-I. METHODS: Researchers conducted a retrospective chart review of patients admitted to a military community hospit

The Relationship Between Self-Assessment and Peer Assessment of Clinical Judgment in Simulation.

BACKGROUND: Self-assessment and peer assessment in nursing education promotes students' metacognition, clinical judgment skills, and communication. However, minimal research has examined the relationship between self-assessment and peer assessment of clinical judgment. METHOD: An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design examined the relationship between self-assessment and peer assessment in simulation among senior undergraduate nursing students (N = 32). Pearson correlation and linear regression assessed score consistency, while qualitative thematic analysis identified factors influencing

The role of emotion-related individual differences in enjoyment and masking smile judgment.

BACKGROUND: While some research indicates that individuals can accurately judge smile authenticity of enjoyment and masking smile expressions, other research suggest modest judgment rates of masking smiles. The current study explored the role of emotion-related individual differences in the judgment of authenticity and recognition of negative emotions in enjoyment and masking smile expressions as a potential explanation for the differences observed. METHODS: Specifically, Experiment 1 investigated the role of emotion contagion (Doherty in J Nonverbal Behav 21:131-154, 1997), emotion intellige

Fear of Negative Evaluation, Trait Anxiety, and Judgment Bias in Adults who Stutter.

PURPOSE: Persons who stutter (PWS) and those with social anxiety disorder may exhibit fear of negative evaluation (FNE) and anxiety in social situations. However, the information processing biases that perpetuate these characteristics have had limited investigation. This study investigated judgment bias in social situations. METHOD: Participants included 50 adults who stutter and 45 age- and gender-matched fluent persons who do not stutter (PWNS), who made up the control group. Participants completed the Interpretation and Judgmental Questionnaire (Voncken, Bögels, & deVries, 2003), and threa

Generalization of Pain-Related Fear Using a Left-Right Hand Judgment Conditioning Task.

Recent research suggests that the mere intention to perform a painful movement can elicit pain-related fear. Based on these findings, the present study aimed to determine whether imagining a movement that is associated with pain (CS+) can start to elicit conditioned pain-related fear as well and whether pain-related fear elicited by imagining a painful movement can spread towards novel, similar but distinct imagined movements. We proposed a new experimental paradigm that integrates the left-right hand judgment task (HJT) with a differential fear conditioning procedure. During Acquisition, one

Integrative moral judgment: dissociating the roles of the amygdala and ventromedial prefrontal cortex.

A decade's research highlights a critical dissociation between automatic and controlled influences on moral judgment, which is subserved by distinct neural structures. Specifically, negative automatic emotional responses to prototypically harmful actions (e.g., pushing someone off of a footbridge) compete with controlled responses favoring the best consequences (e.g., saving five lives instead of one). It is unknown how such competitions are resolved to yield "all things considered" judgments. Here, we examine such integrative moral judgments. Drawing on insights from research on self-interest

Assessing intraoperative judgment using script concordance testing through the gynecology continuum of practice.

OBJECTIVE: To measure surgical judgment across the Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) continuum of practice and identify factors that correlate with improved surgical judgment. METHODS: A 45-item written examination was developed using script concordance theory, which compares an examinee's responses to a series of "ill-defined" surgical scenarios to a reference panel of experts. The examination was administered to OBGYN residents, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) fellows, practicing OBGYN physicians and FPMRS experts. Surgical judgment was evaluated by comparing score

Unexpected novelty and familiarity orienting responses in lateral parietal cortex during recognition judgment.

The role of lateral parietal cortex during recognition memory is heavily debated. We examined parietal activation during an Explicit Memory Cueing recognition paradigm that biases participants towards expecting novel or familiar stimuli on a trial-by-trial basis using anticipatory cues ("Likely Old", "Likely New"), compared to trials with neutral cues ("????"). Three qualitatively distinct patterns were observed in the left lateral parietal cortex. An unexpected novelty response occurred in left anterior intraparietal cortex (IPS)/post-central gyrus (PoCG) in which greater activation was obser

[A preliminary fMRI study of moral judgment task in high functioning autistic children].

Autistic patients show social cognitive disorders and hardly recognize their situations. This means it is difficult for them to obey rules or conform to customs. Humans have social intelligence thought to be related to a network connected to amygdala, the orbito-frontal cortex, and the superior temporal gyrus. It has been reported that normal participants judged morality in dilemma sentences through which the medial orbito-frontal cortex and the right lateral prefrontal cortex were activated. However, where autism is concerned, there has been no fMRI study during the moral judgment task. The s
