Mycoplasma conjunctivae is considered the major cause of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) in Alpine ibex (Capra i. ibex) and chamois (Rupicapra r. rupicapra). While it is known that domestic sheep can act as healthy carriers for M. conjunctivae, this question has not been addressed in wild ungulates so far. In this study, bacteriological investigations and field observations were performed to assess whether free-ranging Alpine ibex can be healthy carriers of M. conjunctivae. Among 136 ibex without clinical signs of IKC, M. conjunctivae was identified 26 times (19.1%) by TaqMan PCR. To ass

BACKGROUND: Moraxella bovis is the main etiological agent of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). However, Moraxella bovoculi and other bacteria are also frequently isolated from IBK. The recurrent detection of M. bovoculi suggests a role in IBK, though its contribution remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize M. bovoculi and M. bovis isolates from IBK cases and evaluate the role of other ocular bacteria.
METHODS: Eye swabs from cattle with keratoconjunctivitis were cultured and identified using MALDI-TOF MS, with 16S rRNA sequencing for confirmation. Virulence gene analysis

INTRODUCTION: Both infectious and non-infectious forms of acute conjunctivitis are known. Viruses, especially different types of adenoviruses are the etiological agents of infectious epidemic conjunctivitis (conjunctivitis epidemica).
AIMS: The author's aims were to describe an outbreak of keratoconjunctivitis and to detect the viral agent by molecular methods in Hungary.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Classical epidemiological methods were used for investigation. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by sequencing were used for the detection of adenoviral hexon region from freshly collected conj

Histopathological evaluation of ocular tissues is important in differentiating between infectious and autoimmune disease. Inflammation, necrosis and keratolysis are common to most forms of keratitis. Histopathology can be of great help in identifying the causative organism, establishing a final diagnosis and/or managing the patient with herpes simplex virus keratitis, mycotic keratitis, acanthamoeba keratitis or microsporidia keratoconjunctivitis. Important pathogenetic knowledge with therapeutic relevance has been gained from histopathological studies in nummular keratitis after epidemic kera

Field trials were carried out from 1980 to 1984 on the use of a controlled-release pesticidal fly control technique on farms in Sussex, England, with a recurrent infectious keratoconjunctivitis problem related to fly attack. Pesticide impregnated p.v.c. ear-tags provided control of biting and disease-carrying fly species throughout the season. Over 90% control of flies, compared with untreated herds, was attained using 2 tags impregnated with cypermethrin, fenvalerate or flucythrinate, although control using a single tag was unsatisfactory. In all cases infectious keratoconjunctivitis was almo

PURPOSE: To describe a case of bilateral keratoconjunctivitis in a patient with lichen planus.
METHODS: Case report and review of the English literature.
RESULTS: To our knowledge, this is the fourth reported case of keratoconjunctivitis associated with lichen planus. A 33-year-old Navajo man with lichen planus had recurrent and progressive keratoconjunctivitis that failed to improve on multiple topical medications. Tapered oral prednisone, 2% topical cyclosporin, and amniotic membrane transplantation pacified the acute exacerbation.
CONCLUSIONS: Our patient with lichen planus developed an

Several isolates of Moraxella bovis obtained from cattle with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis killed monocytes and macrophages in vitro and carried 3 to 5 plasmids. Cloned and noncloned M bovis isolates readily induced the disease, killed the phagocytes in vitro, and carried 3 plasmids. Moraxella bovis isolates of low in vivo virulence carried 5 plasmids and did not kill phagocytes to the extent that isolates with 3 plasmids did. The possible implications of these findings in the pathogenesis of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis are discussed. Also, a classification of M bovis colo

Atopic keratoconjunctivitis is a chronic noninfectious inflammatory condition and is one of the most severe ophthalmic complications associated with atopic dermatitis. It requires prompt and effective treatment to prevent permanent vision loss. Complications of atopic keratoconjunctivitis include cataracts, keratoconus, infectious keratitis, blepharitis, tear dysfunction, and steroid-induced glaucoma. All treatment for atopic keratoconjunctivitis should be managed in conjunction with an ophthalmologist, and immediate referral is indicated when there is moderate to severe irritation, increased

Common variable immune deficiency (CVID) is characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia, impaired antibody production, and recurrent bacterial infections. Reports of ocular manifestations of CVID are rare. The authors discuss a patient with recurrent keratoconjunctivitis that presented as an initial manifestation of CVID. The diagnosis of CVID should be entertained where multiple recurrences of keratoconjunctivitis are unresponsive to antibiotic and steroid therapy and when other causes of immune deficiency have been excluded. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) was used successfully as treatment and

An infectious keratoconjunctivitis occurring in goats in the Sudan is described. Experimental transmission using infective ocular discharges resulted in a conjunctivitis in young kids and a severe keratoconjunctivitis in an adult goat. A pleomorphic organism which resembled Rickettsia spp was found in conjunctival smears from naturally and experimentally infected animals. Neither Mycoplasma nor Chlamydia spp were isolated in microbiological cultures.

BACKGROUND: Shield-shaped corneal ulcers and corneal plaques in vernal keratoconjunctivitis are associated with delayed epithelial healing, as well as the risks of infectious keratitis and sterile stromal ulceration. Significant visual impairment due to scarring and irregular astigmatism may result from central corneal lesions.
METHODS: Three eyes with central corneal lesions resulting from vernal keratoconjunctivitis were treated by excimer laser after active vernal keratoconjunctivitis was controlled and inflammatory plaque overlying the shield ulcers was removed.
RESULTS: All three eyes s

In two separate herds of fattening calves a sudden-onset outbreak of ocular disease with profuse lacrimation occurred. The disease resembled the early stage of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis but after a few days the clinical signs of bronchopneumonia appeared. From conjunctival swabs Mycoplasma (M.) bovigenitalium, M. bovirhinis and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus were isolated. Moraxella bovis infection was not established. In one of the herds M. bovigenitalium was also found in the pneumonic lungs of dead calves. In one herd M. bovoculi was isolated from a cow with chro

The cause of keratoconjunctivitis could be either infectious or non-infectious in etiology. The case of a 79-year-old female patient with chronic, purulent bilateral keratoconjunctivitis which was totally resistant to therapy is presented. The patient also suffered from non-specific collagenosis resulting in severe Sicca symptoms. Over the years none of the many antibiotic or lubricant therapies that were administered could alleviate the symptoms and corneal scars resulted. After a long search the focus was localized. On everting the eyelids a pair of nearly fully decomposed therapeutic contac

PURPOSE: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a known cause of metastatic endophthalmitis. However, the organism has never been described to cause severe infectious keratoconjunctivitis. We report a fulminant case of nosocomial K. pneumoniae conjunctivitis complicated by infectious keratitis and corneal perforation in both eyes.
METHODS: An 83-year-old previously healthy Chinese woman, blind in the right eye from rubeotic glaucoma and with bilateral dense cataracts, was admitted for observation after a head injury. While in hospital, she developed purulent bilateral conjunctivitis. Repeated cultures grew

Natural cases of keratoconjunctivitis, apparently caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), in layer chickens are described. The disease occurred in a commercial flock consisting of 36,000 pullets (Babcock), first appearing around 30 days of age. Clinically, affected chickens showed unilateral or bilateral swelling of the facial skin and the eyelids, increased lacrimation, congestion of conjunctival vessels, and respiratory rales. Some of the severely affected chickens closed their eyes. The morbidity reached 27.8%, and it was estimated that approximately 10% died from reduced feed intake due t

A collection of strains of Moraxella bovis, some pathogenic and some non-pathogenic in cattle, together with other M. bovis preparations, Neisseria ovis, Staphylococcus aureus and Moraxella non-liquefaciens were studied by scanning electron microscopy for their affinity to bovine corneal preparations in vitro. The in vitro procedure provides a convenient method for studies on host-pathogen interactions at the early stage of pathogenesis. The results corresponded well with the pathogenicity of the respective strains and species in cattle. It is considered that the pathogenicity of M. bovis is a

The primary purpose of these experiments was to evaluate an autogenous Moraxella bovis bacterin administered through 2 separate routes of inoculation. An autogenous bacterin was manufactured by using M. bovis recovered from the herd. The bacterin was administered by subcutaneous injection or subconjunctival injection. In each experiment, unvaccinated animals served as controls. Random selection methods were used to place calves into a vaccination or control group. There was no statistical difference in development of infectious keratoconjunctivitis between the vaccinated and unvaccinated calve

Two isolates, identified as Chlamydia (neorickettsia) were obtained from the lacrimal secretion of calves with an acute infection on two of a total of four investigated farms with a record of infectious keratoconjunctivitis. In about 70% of the calves that survived there were complement-fixing antibodies against the neorickettsial antigen, the titers ranging from 1:8 to 1:64. Calves that yielded the causative agent were investigated in terms of the antibody dynamics. In the remaining herds no specific antibodies were demonstrated in animals that had survived. One of the isolated strains was us
