Altered Profiles of Gut Microbiota in Klebsiella pneumoniae-Induced Pyogenic Liver Abscess.

Intestinal microbiota plays a crucial role in preventing the colonization and invasion by pathogens, and disruption of microbiota may cause opportunistic infections and diseases. Pathogens often have strategies to escape from the colonization resistance mediated by microbiota, but whether they also modulate the microbiota composition is still a topic of investigation. In the present study, we addressed this question using an opportunistic pathogen, Klebsiella pneumoniae serotype K1, which is known to cause pyogenic liver abscess (KLA) in about 30% of mice. We examined the effect of K. pneumoni

Optimization of an EPS-enriched gluten-free sorghum bread with improved technological properties and eubiotic potential: evidence from an in vitro colonic model.

The growing demand for healthy and appealing gluten-free products has prompted research into alternative cereals like sorghum and targeted fermentation strategies. Hence, this study aimed at developing a gluten-free sorghum sourdough bread enriched in exopolysaccharides (EPS) and evaluating its technological, nutritional, and eubiotic potential using the MICODE in vitro colon model. Sorghum doughs were fermented with four selected lactic acid bacteria strains and in situ EPS production was optimized, with Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides DSM20193 showing the highest yield (3.29 g/100 g). Altered Tonsillar Microbiome in Children with Down Syndrome and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Children with Down syndrome (DS) have a high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) due to anatomic, neuromuscular, immunological and metabolic factors, yet the contribution of the tonsillar microbiome to airway obstruction in this population remains unexplored. We hypothesized that DS-associated OSA would be associated with a distinct tonsillar microbiome compared to non-DS OSA . METHODS: Tonsillar tissue from 22 DS and 18 NDS participants were analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing. Alpha and beta diversity were assessed using Faith's phylogenetic diversity and UniF

Effects of Embryonic Thermal Manipulation on Body Performance and Cecum Microbiome in Broiler Chickens Following a Post-Hatch Lipopolysaccharide Challenge.

Thermal manipulation (TM) during embryogenesis has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance post-hatch performance and improve resilience to environmental and bacterial stress, which offers a potential alternative to reduce the reliance on antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) in broiler production. This study investigated TM's ability to modulate broilers' cecal microbiota and enhance resilience to lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced stress. Eggs in the control group (CON) were incubated at 37.8 °C and 56% relative humidity (RH), while TM eggs were exposed to 39 °C and 65% RH for 18 h daily from

Compound probiotics alleviate cadmium-induced intestinal dysfunction and microbiota disorders in broilers.

Cadmium (Cd), a common environmental pollutant, seriously threatens the health of intestine. This research aimed to investigate the effects of compound probiotics (CP) on intestinal dysfunction and cecal microbiota dysregulation induced by Cd in broilers. A total of 240 1-day-old Arbor Acre (AA) broilers were randomly assigned to four groups. After 120 days of feeding, the jejunum tissues and cecal contents were sampled for jejunum histopathological observation, the intestinal barrier and inflammatory factors related mRNA and proteins examinations, and intestinal microbiota analysis. The resul

The impact of microplastics on the mice gut microbiome: a meta-analysis.

Microplastics are nearly ubiquitous in the natural environment. There is increasing awareness of the ingestion of microplastics in a wide range of wild animals and humans, but their health and fitness impacts remain poorly understood. Mounting evidence suggests that microplastics could accumulate in the gut, affecting the microbiome and hindering its function. This may constitute a direct pathway through which exposure to microplastics could affect health and disease. However, prior studies on the effects of microplastic exposure on the microbiome show contrasting findings raising the question

Species-level understanding of the bacterial community in Daqu based on full-length 16S rRNA gene sequences.

Daqu is used as the fermentation starter of Baijiu and contributes diversified functional microbes for saccharifying grains and converting sugars into ethanol and aroma components in Baijiu products. Daqu is mainly classified into three types, namely low (LTD), medium (MTD) and high (HTD) temperature Daqu, according to the highest temperatures reached in their fermentation processes. In this study, we used the PacBio small-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing technology to determine the full-length 16 S rRNA gene sequences from the metagenomes of 296 samples of different types of Daqu collecte

A New Approach to Harness Probiotics Against Common Bacterial Skin Pathogens: Towards Living Antimicrobials.

In this study, the potential of certain lactic acid bacteria-classified as probiotics and known to be antimicrobially active against pathogens or food-poisoning microorganisms-was evaluated with respect to their activity against bacterial skin pathogens. The aim of the study was to develop a plaster/bandage for the application of inhibitory substances produced by these probiotics when applied to diseased skin. For this purpose, two Streptococcus salivarius strains and one Lactobacillus plantarum were tested for production of antimicrobials (bacteriocin-like substances) active against Gram-posi

Effect of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria on phosphorus dynamics and the bacterial community during composting of sugarcane industry waste.

Sugarcane processing generates a large quantity of residues, such as filter cake and ashes, which are sometimes composted prior to their amendment in soil. However, important issues still have to be addressed on this subject, such as the description of bacterial succession that occurs throughout the composting process and the possibilities of using phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) during the process to improve phosphorus (P) availability in the compost end product. Consequently, this study evaluated the bacterial diversity and P dynamics during the composting process when inoculated with

Impact of acetaminophen on the growth kinetics and metabolite production of probiotic lactic acid bacteria.

Bacterial interactions within the human gut microbiota are dynamic and closely linked to host health. These interactions are time-dependent and can be modulated by probiotic bacteria through metabolite production, environmental modification such as pH changes, and niche occupation. However, commonly used human-targeted drugs may alter these microbial dynamics. This study evaluated the effect of acetaminophen, a widely used over-the-counter drug, on the growth dynamics of a probiotic lactic acid bacterium within synthetic gut microbiota communities. The growth of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lacti

Unlocking phenolic bioactive compounds from olive leaves through lactic acid fermentation.

Olive leaves represent about 10% of the biomass generated during olive oil production and are rich in phenolic compounds with known bioactivity. This study evaluated the effect of fermentation with six lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains on the release of phenolic compounds with antioxidant and antidiabetic activities in leaves from the 'Picual' cultivar. LAB survival was strain-dependent and influenced by specific phenolics. Fermentation with selected LAB significantly increased key compounds: oleuropein rose by up to 55% with Pediococcus acidilactici and 28% with Leuconostoc mesenteroides, wh

The milk fat globule membrane increases bacterial serotonin and exopolysaccharide production for maintenance of intestinal cell differentiation.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is primarily produced in the gut and is produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB). It plays a crucial role in regulating mood and mental health disorders via the gut-brain axis using the enteric nervous system. Exopolysaccharides (EPS) are complex metabolic end products of probiotic LAB that contribute to health-promoting activities in the intestine. Interactions between LAB and components in the food matrix, such as the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), may alter the production of serotonin and EPS in the gastrointestinal tract. The objectives of this work we

Lactic acid bacteria-derived biosurfactants: emerging strategies for biofilm control, virulence attenuation, and food safety.

Biofilm-associated infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria and fungi impose a substantial global health burden, and conventional antibiotics are increasingly ineffective at eradicating them due to poor penetration of the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix and escalating resistance. Biosurfactants produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have attracted research interest as alternatives, owing to the GRAS status of their producing organisms and their broad mechanistic repertoire. This review critically evaluates the structural diversity of LAB-derived biosurfactants, covering

Bioremoval of lead (pb) salts from synbiotic milk by lactic acid bacteria.

The present study investigated the effects of five species of indigenous probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus sp. and Bifidobacterium sp.) and prebiotic inulin on the decontamination of two Pb2+ salts (lead nitrate and lead acetate) in food models (low-fat, semi-fat, and high-fat milk). The average of the lowest and highest pH values was related to samples containing L. paracasei and L. acidophilus bacteria, as determined by pH change results. In most instances, adding inulin accelerated the pH-decreasing process, but the results were not particularly significant (p < 0.05). All probiotic strains
