The present study examines whether large language model (LLM) embeddings can approximate the psychometric validation process of a newly developed psychological scale. Using the Academic Psychological Distress Scale (APDS) as a case study, we replicated the full validation pipeline, traditionally performed on human response data, by applying exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (EFA and CFA) to semantic similarity matrices derived from LLM embeddings. We first computed cosine similarity among all 58 APDS items and found a moderately strong correspondence with the participants' correlati

Most children with a developmental language disorder (DLD) have persistent grammatical difficulties, and a considerable subgroup of these children also experience difficulties in their speech production development. Research suggests that speech and language development are related, but what this relation looks like is unclear. We examined whether phonological and grammatical complexity and accuracy scores of 3- to 6-year-old children with DLD are related over time. We included 37 children with DLD (mean age T1 = 4;2 (SD = 1;0), range: 2;9-6;0) who received intervention in a clinical setting.

BACKGROUND: Congenital or early-acquired hearing impairment poses a major barrier to the development of spoken language and communication. Early detection and effective (re)habilitative interventions are essential for parents and families who wish their children to achieve age-appropriate spoken language. Auditory-verbal therapy (AVT) is a (re)habilitative approach aimed at children with hearing impairments. AVT comprises intensive early intervention therapy sessions with a focus on audition, technological management and involvement of the child's caregivers in therapy sessions; it is typicall

Infants' deictic gestures, like hold-out-give (HoG) and pointing, are early manifestations of intentional, referential communication and predict later language acquisition. But what factors predict the early emergence of these deictic gestures? The present study investigated the longitudinal and cross-sectional influence of caregivers' responsiveness and pointing, beginning at 7 months, on infants' HoG and index-finger pointing gestures at 10 months, and infants' language abilities at 24 months. Utilizing a longitudinal design, we assessed 82 typically developing German infants, 42 of whom wer

Writing is an essential element of literacy development, and language plays a central role in the composing process, including developing, organizing, and refining ideas. Language and writing are interconnected, making it paramount for educators to attend to the development of deaf students' language skills. In this quasi-experimental study, we examined the impact of strategic and interactive pedagogical approaches, namely Strategic and Interactive Writing Instruction, implemented with deaf students in grades 3-6 to develop genre-specific traits in their expressive language (spoken or signed)

This study examined the relationship between parental self-efficacy in parents of young deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children and children's spoken language skills. A retrospective within-subjects study design was used that included 24 mother-child dyads with DHH children. Parental self-efficacy was assessed using the Scale of Parental Involvement and Self-Efficacy-Revised. Children's language abilities were assessed using the Preschool Language Scale-5th edition. Our data revealed no significant associations between global measures of parental self-efficacy and children's auditory comprehen

Introduction Migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) are chronic diseases associated with significant socioeconomic losses and social and psychological impact (current global prevalence: 10% and 38%, respectively). Thus, they require accurate identification and classification. In clinical practice, validated screening tools able to quickly determine migraine and TTH with high sensitivity and specificity help provide an objective and multifaceted understanding of patients' headache symptoms. However, no tool has been developed or validated yet in Japan to ask multifaceted questions about heada

Most deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children are born to hearing parents and steered toward spoken rather than signed language, introducing a delay in language access. This study investigated the effects of this delay on number acquisition. DHH children (N = 44, meanage = 58 months, 21F, >50% White) and typically-hearing (TH) children (N = 79, meanage = 49 months, 51F, >50% White) were assessed on number and language in 2011-13. DHH children showed similar trajectories to TH children but delayed timing; a binary logistic regression showed that the odds of being a cardinal-principle (CP) know

Pathogenic KAT6A variants cause syndromic neurodevelopmental disability. "Speech delay" is reported, yet none have examined specific speech and language features of KAT6A syndrome. Here we phenotype the communication profile of individuals with pathogenic KAT6A variants. Medical and communication data were acquired via standardized surveys and telehealth-assessment. Forty-nine individuals (25 females; aged 1;5-31;10) were recruited, most with truncating variants (44/49). Intellectual disability/developmental delay (42/45) was common, mostly moderate/severe, alongside concerns about vision (37/

BACKGROUND: The management of tracheoesophageal speech (TES) rehabilitation is an area of speech and language therapists' (SLTs) clinical practice where knowledge and skills are primarily developed through postgraduate workplace experience and training. Although recent research suggests clinicians in Australia perceive there is adequate access to workplace training, little is known about how clinicians develop and/or maintain clinical confidence when working in this specialist caseload.
AIMS: To investigate factors that contribute to development of clinician confidence as well as the factors

The present study reports on the development, structure, and associations with practice for a new measure of preschool teachers' knowledge about language and vocabulary development and how to support this development in the classroom. Results from item response theory models with responses from a sample of 248 preschool teachers indicated that four scales measuring pedagogical content knowledge and content knowledge for vocabulary and language, respectively, had adequate psychometric characteristics. Confirmatory factor analyses further supported a four-factor structure, although all scales we

Wylie, McAllister, Davidson, and Marshall (2013) argue that recommendations made within the World Report on Disability provide an opportunity for speech-language pathologists to consider new ways of developing services for people with communication and swallowing disorders. They propose that current approaches to the delivery of speech-language pathology services are largely embedded within the medical model of impairment, thereby limiting the ability of services to meet the needs of people in a holistic manner. In this paper, the criticality of selecting an appropriate service delivery model
