Watson syndrome is a rare genetic condition partly characterised by developmental delays and learning difficulties. A profile of speech and language skills associated with this developmental syndrome is yet to be described in the literature. In order to address this gap, this study presents the case of an 18-year-old man with Watson syndrome and reports both standardised and naturalistic assessments of speech, language, oro-motor skills, and semantic and phonemic fluency. Analyses included norm-referencing, discrepancy comparison, phonological process analysis, and acoustic analyses of voice a

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify sleep quality profiles of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), to compare these profiles with those of typically developing (TD) children, and to verify whether there are differences between them in terms of language skills.
METHODS: We evaluated the sleep quality and language skills of 47 children with ASD without intellectual disability (ID) and 32 children with TD. Using a hierarchical cluster analysis, we identified two sleep quality ASD profiles (poor and good). We then performed a series of MANCOVAs and ANOVAs to compare the sleep qualit

The development of an expressive language score for people with autism based on the ADOS-2 was recently reported by Mazurek et al. (2019). The current study examined the construct validity of the ADOS-2 expressive language score (ELS) in a sample of adolescents with fragile X syndrome (n = 45, 10 girls), a neurodevelopmental disorder with high rates of autism symptomology. The ADOS-2 ELS showed strong convergent validity with multiple assessments of expressive language, receptive language, and nonverbal cognition. Divergent validity was demonstrated between the expressive language score and ch

Compared to other countries, the prevalence of speech-language disorders among children and also the intervention frequency appear to be much higher in Germany. Since otorhinolaryngologists often initiate speech-language interventions, the first part of this review systematically outlines the guideline-conform diagnostic pathway from examination to therapeutic intervention. The process of first developing a suspected diagnosis which justifies speech-language tests is explained. Beyond this, the rational selection of a set of tests from all those available-some of which the otorhinolaryngologis

BACKGROUND: Internationally, speech and language therapists (SLTs) are involving parents and providing home tasks in intervention for phonology-based speech sound disorder (SSD). To ensure that SLTs' involvement of parents is guided by empirical research, a review of peer-reviewed published evidence is needed.
AIMS: To provide SLTs and researchers with a comprehensive appraisal and analysis of peer-reviewed published intervention research reporting parent involvement and the provision of home tasks in intervention studies for children with phonology-based SSD.

BACKGROUND: The early identification of children is one of five themes identified by the Bercow review of 2008. The review also notes that there is a wide range in the methods used to identify children and it goes on to recommend that there needs to be a more systematic approach. One such approach would be to screen children before, or shortly after, school entry. The GAPS test has been designed as a screening tool to identify young children with language impairment and is reported to be of value in identifying children with language difficulties. However, the test has previously only been eva

Language difficulties are common among individuals with dyslexia and warrant greater consideration across research, advocacy, and clinical practice. For almost a hundred years, language difficulties have been observed in individuals with dyslexia (e.g., Orton, 1928). However, in approximately half of all individuals with dyslexia, language difficulties meet the clinical criteria for developmental language disorder (DLD), an impairment in the comprehension and use of oral language (Bishop et al., 2017; Catts et al., 2003, 2005; Ramus et al., 2013). Even when language difficulties in dyslexia do

The Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) system has been used increasingly in research to record and evaluate the everyday speech of autistic children and their families. However, it is unclear how researchers are using LENA and whether the system is well-suited for work with autistic individuals. The purpose of this systematic review is to summarize the use of LENA in autism research, to highlight the strengths and limitations of the system as identified by researchers, and to provide recommendations for future research and clinical use. Forty-two studies that used LENA with samples of autist

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions, yet is chronically underserved, with far fewer children receiving clinical services than expected from prevalence estimates, and very little research attention relative to other neurodevelopmental conditions of similar prevalence and severity. This editorial describes a research priority-setting exercise undertaken by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, which aims to redress this imbalance. From consultations with researchers, practitioners and individuals with lived experience, 10 r

Purpose This research note addresses whether task administration variations can improve Dimensional Change Card Sort (DCCS) performance in preschoolers with developmental language disorder (DLD). Method Participants included preschoolers with DLD who failed the standard DCCS, which is characterized by inability to switch from one card sorting rule to a new rule. After an approximately 2.5-month delay, participants were retested on the DCCS in one of three conditions: repeating standard administration, participants labeling relevant card dimensions, or briefly removing target cards before the s

PURPOSE: Early language and communication interventions for children with language impairments have been shown to be effective in assessments administered immediately after treatment. The purpose of the current systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the overall durability of those effects over time and whether durability was related to outcome type, etiology of child language impairments, implementer of intervention, magnitude of posttest effects, time between intervention and follow-up, and study risk of bias.
METHOD: We conducted a systematic search of online databases and refere

OBJECTIVE: To study emotional and behavioral disorders in children with specific language impairment (SLI).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group included 60 children with a diagnosis of specific expressive language impairment at the age of 4-6 years. The following methods were used to assess emotional and behavioral disorders: the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, the SNAP-IV scale, and the Questionnaire created by G.P. Lavrentieva and T.M. Titarenko. To objectify the severity of speech disorders, 10-point scales were used, assessing the level of comprehension of the addressed speech

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to create a stimulability treatment program in Turkish language that targets Turkish consonants and vowels and to present the preliminary findings of the effectiveness of the program in a small group of Turkish children with speech sound disorder (SSD).
METHOD: Twenty-two children with SSD participated in the study. The Turkish Articulation and Phonology Test (SST) was used in the assessment of children. Intelligibility ratings were completed by their caregivers through the Turkish version of Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS), and the stimulabilit

Receptive language disorder [F80.2 ICD=10] is the most severe children's language disorder: the child with normal intellect and hearing does not start to comprehend the speech of others and as a consequence - to speak. The etiology is unknown, the prognosis unfavorable. The profound study of the syndrome is necessary for the clarification of diagnostic criteria and creation of the system of adequate medical and pedagogical help, and also in the theoretical aspect. We performed an analysis of the symptomatology and progress of the syndrome (17 children of 2-10 years of age) based on data of ont

Pragmatic language competence-the ability to use language effectively in social contexts-is foundational for communication, learning, and social integration. Difficulties in pragmatics are not only a hallmark of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but are also prevalent across developmental disabilities, including ADHD, developmental language disorder, and intellectual disability. Such deficits predict long-term challenges in adaptive functioning, peer relationships, and educational attainment. This longitudinal study investigates early predictors of pragmatic language competence in middle childhoo

BACKGROUND: Some studies suggest that children with language and learning disorders (LLDs) show more internalizing and externalizing problems than their peers. However, the available evidence remains inconsistent, especially regarding the conditions under which these psychological problems occur.
METHODS: We performed a meta-analysis of studies comparing children with LLDs and controls on internalizing (53 independent samples, 135 effect sizes) and externalizing problems (37 independent samples, 61 effect sizes) separately.
RESULTS: Children with LLDs showed higher internalizing (Hedges' g =

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that word reading accuracy, not oral language, is associated with spelling performance in school-age children. We compared fourth grade spelling accuracy in children with specific language impairment (SLI), dyslexia or both (SLI/dyslexia) to their typically developing grade-matched peers. Results of the study revealed that children with SLI performed similarly to their typically developing peers on a single-word spelling task. Alternatively, those with dyslexia and SLI/dyslexia evidenced poor spelling accuracy. Errors made by both those with

Purpose Many children with developmental disorders experience difficulty mastering grammatical forms, including children with developmental language disorder and a subset of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). One of the key language features in both of these populations is a weakness in the expressive use of grammatical forms. There is a paucity of studies that evaluate the effectiveness of interventions targeting grammatical forms for populations other than developmental language disorder. The current study evaluated a combined explicit-implicit intervention approach to teach gramm
