Effects of safinamide on pain in Parkinson's disease with motor fluctuations: an exploratory study.

Pain is a common and disabling non-motor symptom (NMS) of Parkinson's disease (PD), which occurs through the course of the disease, often unrecognized and undertreated. For this study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of safinamide to reduce pain in PD patients with motor fluctuations. A total of 13 PD patients with pain receiving safinamide (Xadago®, 100 mg/daily) were prospectively evaluated for 12 weeks. The primary outcome measures were changes in the total score of the King's Pain Scale for Parkinson's Disease (KPPS), Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) Intensity and Interference, and the Nume

In vivo single-cell lineage tracing in zebrafish using high-resolution infrared laser-mediated gene induction microscopy.

Heterogeneity broadly exists in various cell types both during development and at homeostasis. Investigating heterogeneity is crucial for comprehensively understanding the complexity of ontogeny, dynamics, and function of specific cell types. Traditional bulk-labeling techniques are incompetent to dissect heterogeneity within cell population, while the new single-cell lineage tracing methodologies invented in the last decade can hardly achieve high-fidelity single-cell labeling and long-term in-vivo observation simultaneously. In this work, we developed a high-precision infrared laser-evoked g

[The study on the targets of the optical evoked auditory brainstem response on the cochlea of guinea pig stimulating by infrared laser].

Objective: To identify the targets of the infrared laser stimulating on the cochlea of guinea pig which evoked auditory brainstem response (oABR), and explore the mechanisms of the infrared neurostimulation. Methods: A polished optical fiber with 200 μm diameter (NA=0.22) was planted into the scala tympani of guinea pigs to stimulate the cochlea of both the normal hearing and acute deafened guinea pigs. The direction of the fiber distal was changed to radiate different regions of the scala tympani, recording the oABR respectively. Differences of energy thresholds and amplitudes of oABR between

LASCER Bode plots for normal, amblyopic, and stereoanomalous observers.

Indices of laterality, interocular response latency difference, and binocular summation derived from Bode plots (amplitude-versus-temporal frequency and phase lag-versus-temporal frequency) of cortical responses evoked by laser speckle (LASCER) are correlated with common tests used in clinical refraction. We evaluated eight normal observers and eleven observers with histories of amblyopia and/or stereoanomalies. We find that: (1) LASCER amplitude is reduced in the amblyopic eyes relative to the unaffected fellow eyes, (2) LASCER response latency is increased in the amblyopic eyes relative to t

The utility of clinical neurophysiological and quantitative sensory testing for trigeminal neuropathy.

This article reviews the utility of neurophysiological recordings and quantitative sensory testing (QST) in providing sensitive, quantitative, and objective tests for the diagnosis and localization of damage to the trigeminal nerve. Electromyography and recordings of the masseter reflex and compound muscle action potential evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation or direct electrical stimulation of the masseteric nerve can be of value in evaluating the function of a motor neurons supplying the muscles of mastication. Orthodromic recording of the sensory action potential and trigeminal somat

Parasagittal and parafalcine meningiomas: integral strategy for optimizing safety and retrospective review of a single surgeon series.

Background: Parafalcine and parasagittal meningiomas present unique challenges for resection. Although maximal safe resection is the primary goal of surgical management for these lesions, venous infarction and eloquent cortical structure damage occur in up to 14% of cases. Therefore, optimal preoperative planning and intraoperative technique is critical. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed a single surgeon's case series with resection of 58 parafalcine and parasagittal meningiomas. Operative strategy included not crossing the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) during craniotomy, not resecting the f

Pain Perception in Disorder of Consciousness: A Scoping Review on Current Knowledge, Clinical Applications, and Future Perspective.

Pain perception in individuals with prolonged disorders of consciousness (PDOC) is still a matter of debate. Advanced neuroimaging studies suggest some cortical activations even in patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS) compared to those with a minimally conscious state (MCS). Therefore, pain perception has to be considered even in individuals with UWS. However, advanced neuroimaging assessment can be challenging to conduct, and its findings are sometimes difficult to be interpreted. Conversely, multichannel electroencephalography (EEG) and laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) can be

[Functional imaging of pain].

In this review, we summarize the contribution of functional imaging to the question of nociception in humans. In the beginning of the 90's, brain areas supposed to be involved in physiological pain processes essentially concerned the primary somatosensory area (SI), thalamus, and anterior cingulate cortex. In spite of these a priori hypotheses, the first imaging studies revealed that the main brain areas and those providing the most consistent activations in pain conditions were the insular and the SII cortices, bilaterally. This has been checked with other techniques such as intracerebral rec

[Functional brain mapping of pain perception].

In this review, we summarize the contribution of functional imaging to the question of nociception in humans. In the beginning of the 90's, brain areas supposed to be involved in physiological pain processes were almost exclusively the primary somatosensory area (SI), thalamus, and anterior cingulate cortex. In spite of these a priori hypotheses, the first imaging studies revealed that the main brain areas and those providing the most consistent activations in pain conditions were the insular and the SII cortices, bilaterally. This has been confirmed with other techniques such as intracerebral

Bioreplicated visual features of nanofabricated buprestid beetle decoys evoke stereotypical male mating flights.

Recent advances in nanoscale bioreplication processes present the potential for novel basic and applied research into organismal behavioral processes. Insect behavior potentially could be affected by physical features existing at the nanoscale level. We used nano-bioreplicated visual decoys of female emerald ash borer beetles (Agrilus planipennis) to evoke stereotypical mate-finding behavior, whereby males fly to and alight on the decoys as they would on real females. Using an industrially scalable nanomolding process, we replicated and evaluated the importance of two features of the outer cut

Efficacy and safety of memantine treatment for reduction of changes associated with experimental glaucoma in monkey, I: Functional measures.

PURPOSE: To determine, using electrophysiological measures of visual system function, whether oral daily dosing of memantine is both safe and effective to reduce the injury associated with experimental glaucoma in primates. METHODS: Argon laser treatment of the anterior chamber angle was used to induce chronic ocular hypertension (COHT) in the right eye of 18 macaque monkeys. Nine animals were orally dosed daily with 4 mg/kg memantine while the other nine animals received an oral dose of vehicle only. Using both conventional and multifocal methods, recordings of the electroretinogram (ERG) we

Early receptor current of wild-type and transducin knockout mice: photosensitivity and light-induced Ca2+ release.

We have used suction-electrode recording to measure the early receptor current (ERC) from single, isolated mammalian photoreceptors. When a wild-type mouse rod was illuminated with light sufficient to close all the cGMP-gated channels, a succeeding bright laser flash bleaching a large proportion of the visual pigment produced an ERC, which at 37 degrees C consisted primarily of a single component of transient positive current. The amplitude of total charge movement of this component declined exponentially with successive flashes, consistent with the direct proportionality of the ERC to the qua

Tissue dissection before direct manipulation to the pathology with pulsed laser-induced liquid jet system in skull base surgery--preservation of fine vessels and maintained optic nerve function.

BACKGROUND: Most difficulties in skull base tumor removal are generally caused by adhesion of feeding arteries to the vital structures and cranial nerves. Water jet technology provides tissue dissectability with preservation of fine blood vessels both in experimental and clinical situations. However problems still remain regarding whether tumor removal with preservation of peripheral nerve function is possible or not. This clinical investigation evaluated functional preservation of peripheral nerves and dissectability with a newly developed pulsed laser-induced liquid jet (LILJ) system under i

Modulation of the autonomic nervous system by one session of spinal low-level laser therapy in patients with chronic colonic motility dysfunction.

Patients with a defecation disorder may not evoke a normal defecation reflex, or the reflex may be excessive, as a dysfunction of the spinal autonomic nervous system. Treatment with various forms of lumbar and sacral neuromodulation have shown symptom improvement, but potential changes in autonomic functioning are rarely studied. Here we evaluate the effects on autonomic function of a single session of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the lumbar and sacral spine in 41 patients with chronic gastrointestinal motor dysfunction. The LLLT protocol used red LED light at a wavelength of 660 nm for 1
