Equation learning to identify nano-engineered particle-cell interactions: an interpretable machine learning approach.

Designing nano-engineered particles capable of the delivery of therapeutic and diagnostic agents to a specific target remains a significant challenge. Understanding how interactions between particles and cells are impacted by the physicochemical properties of the particle will help inform rational design choices. Mathematical and computational techniques allow for details regarding particle-cell interactions to be isolated from the interwoven set of biological, chemical, and physical phenomena involved in the particle delivery process. Here we present a machine learning framework capable of el

Learning Invariant Object and Spatial View Representations in the Brain Using Slow Unsupervised Learning.

First, neurophysiological evidence for the learning of invariant representations in the inferior temporal visual cortex is described. This includes object and face representations with invariance for position, size, lighting, view and morphological transforms in the temporal lobe visual cortex; global object motion in the cortex in the superior temporal sulcus; and spatial view representations in the hippocampus that are invariant with respect to eye position, head direction, and place. Second, computational mechanisms that enable the brain to learn these invariant representations are proposed

Re-Modelling 99m-Technetium Pertechnetate Thyroid Uptake; Statistical, Machine Learning and Deep Learning Approaches.

Background: While normal ranges for 99mTc thyroid percentage uptake vary, the seemingly intuitive evaluation of thyroid function does not reflect the complexity of thyroid pathology and biochemical status. The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in nuclear medicine has driven problem solving associated with logic and reasoning that warrant re-examination of established benchmarks in thyroid functional assessment. Methods: There were 123 patients retrospectively analysed in the study sample comparing scintigraphic findings to grounded truth established through biochemistry status. Convent

In silico prediction of drug-induced ototoxicity using machine learning and deep learning methods.

Drug-induced ototoxicity has become a serious global problem, because of leading to deafness in hundreds of thousands of people every year. It always results from exposure to drugs or environmental chemicals that cause the impairment and degeneration of the inner ear. Herein, we focused on the in silico modeling of drug-induced ototoxicity of chemicals. We collected 1,102 ototoxic medications and 1,705 non-ototoxic drugs. Based on the data set, a series of computational models were developed with different traditional machine learning and deep learning algorithms implemented on an online chemi

Separate influences in learning: evidence from artificial grammar learning with traumatic brain injury patients.

Artificial grammar learning (AGL) is one of the most extensively employed paradigms for the study of learning. Grammaticality is one of the most common ways to index performance in AGL. However, there is still extensive debate on whether there is a distinct psychological process which can lead to grammaticality knowledge. An application of the COVIS model of categorization in AGL suggests that grammaticality might arise from a hypothesis-testing system (when grammaticality is appropriately balanced with other knowledge influences), so that prefrontal cortex damage should be associated with imp

Hippocampal replay contributes to within session learning in a temporal difference reinforcement learning model.

Temporal difference reinforcement learning (TDRL) algorithms, hypothesized to partially explain basal ganglia functionality, learn more slowly than real animals. Modified TDRL algorithms (e.g. the Dyna-Q family) learn faster than standard TDRL by practicing experienced sequences offline. We suggest that the replay phenomenon, in which ensembles of hippocampal neurons replay previously experienced firing sequences during subsequent rest and sleep, may provide practice sequences to improve the speed of TDRL learning, even within a single session. We test the plausibility of this hypothesis in a

Animal behaviour learning environment: software to facilitate learning in canine and feline behavior therapy.

Interactive software has been developed on CD-ROM to facilitate learning of problem formulation, diagnostic methodology, and therapeutic options in dog and cat behavior problems. Students working in small groups are presented with a signalment, a case history, and brief description of the problem behavior as perceived by the client. Students then navigate through the case history by asking the client questions from an icon-driven question pad. Animated video responses to the questions are provided. Students are then required to rate the significance of the questions and answers with respect to

Pseudoname learning by German-speaking children with dyslexia: evidence for a phonological learning deficit.

In 2 experiments, German-speaking dyslexic children (9-year-olds) showed impaired learning of new phonological forms (pseudonames) in a variety of visual-verbal learning tasks. The dyslexic deficit was also found when phonological retrieval cues were provided and when the to-be-learned pseudonames were presented in spoken as well as printed form. However, the dyslexic children showed no name-learning deficit when short, familiar words were used and they also had no difficulty with immediate repetition of the pseudowords. The dyslexic children's difficulty in learning new phonological forms was

StabFL: Stabilized Logit Adjustment with Queue-Augmented Representation Learning for Label-Skewed Federated Learning.

Federated learning under label skew aggregates models trained with different local class distributions. Local logit adjustment can reduce class-dependent bias, but the adjusted loss updates both the encoder and classifier in client-specific directions. StabFL optimizes a joint local objective that combines logit-adjusted classification loss, full-model proximal regularization, and supervised contrastive learning with a client-local queue. The queue retains recent labeled projected representations and extends the comparison set available to small mini-batches. Across CIFAR-10 and PAMAP2, StabFL

Attractor learning for spatiotemporally chaotic dynamical systems using echo state networks with transfer learning.

In this paper, we explore the predictive capabilities of echo state networks (ESNs) for the generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (gKS) equation, an archetypal nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) that exhibits spatiotemporal chaos. Our research focuses on predicting changes in long-term statistical patterns of the gKS model that result from varying the dispersion relation or the length of the spatial domain. We use transfer learning to adapt ESNs to different parameter settings and successfully capture changes in the underlying chaotic attractor. Previous work has shown that transfer lear

Learning robust and task-invariant functional representation from fMRI through Siamese self-supervised learning.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a powerful tool for investigating human brain function. However, the high cost of data acquisition and the inherent subjectivity of psychiatric rating scales often lead to datasets with small sample sizes and variable label quality, especially when targeting a specific neurological condition. Combined with the inherently high dimensionality of fMRI data, these limitations substantially increase the risk of model overfitting. Recent years have seen growing interest in developing fMRI foundation models by combining multiple datasets; however, the c

An attempt to replicate action-effect learning and its generalization without stimulus-stimulus learning.

In everyday life, we often generalize previously learned associations between our actions and their outcomes to novel, but similar situations. The present study aimed to conceptually and directly replicate results reported by Esser et al. (Psychological Research, 87(7), 2249–2258 2023), who reported that action–effect (A–E) learning generalizes to categorically similar stimuli. Yet, the overall picture in the published literature is not overwhelming with regard to such generalization, and hence a replication seems to be of particular importance. We present three experiments. In our conceptual

A synergistic deep learning and machine learning framework for screening heterocyclic compounds against ALDH1A1.

Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) has emerged as a promising therapeutic target because of its critical roles in cancer stem cell maintenance and chemoresistance. However, the development of highly selective ALDH1A1 inhibitors remains challenging because of the extensive structural conservation shared with the closely related isoforms ALDH2 and ALDH1A2. In this study, we developed an integrated computer-aided drug design (CADD) and artificial intelligence (AI) framework to systematically identify selective ALDH1A1 inhibitors from a heterocyclic compound library. The multistage virtual scree

Machine learning and deep learning models for predicting colorectal cancer metastases: A comprehensive review.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, largely due to the development of distant metastases, which is associated with poor survival outcomes. Early detection and accurate prediction of colorectal cancer metastasis can significantly improve patient outcomes. Conventional diagnostic approaches, including imaging and biomarkers, are often limited by suboptimal sensitivity and inter-observer variability. In recent years, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models have emerged as powerful tools capable of analyzing complex, high-dimensional clinic

Beyond whole-image learning: anatomically partitioned deep learning models for superior sinonasal disease classification.

OBJECTIVES: Whole-image deep learning models for CT diagnosis of nasal cavity and paranasal sinus diseases often underperform because they disregard anatomical heterogeneity. We hypothesized that anatomically partitioned deep learning would enhance diagnostic accuracy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multicenter retrospective study enrolled 2947 CT examinations conducted from October 2019 to May 2022. From these, 150 patients were randomly selected for manual segmentation, covering 13 anatomical regions, including the bilateral nasal cavities, maxillary sinuses, anterior ethmoid sinuses, posterior e
