Outbreak of Mycoplasma iowae infection in commercial turkey poults.

In September 1989, 17-day-old turkey poults were submitted to Iowa State University because of leg weakness and dehydration. These birds were commercial large white toms from a flock of 23,214. Lesions observed at necropsy included chondrodystrophy of the hock joints, clear fluid in hock joint spaces, valgus deformities and shortening of the tarsometatarsal bones, and curled toes. Mycoplasma iowae was isolated and identified from swabs of the air sac, cloaca, hock joint, and large intestine. Approximately 1.4% of the flock was culled between 2 and 8 weeks of age because of leg problems. M. iow

The effects of resistance training on bone mineral density and bone quality in type 2 diabetic rats.

Resistance training (RT) has been known to be effective in maintaining and improving bone strength, which is based on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone quality. However, it is not clear whether RT is effective in improving bone strength in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), who have a high risk of fracture. Therefore, we tested the effects of a 6-week RT regimen using percutaneous electrical stimulation in T2DM model rats, male Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF), and its control, Long-Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO). After 6 weeks of RT, tibial BMD in RT legs was significant

Vascularized fibula graft for the traumatically induced long-bone defect.

Long-bone defects resulting from trauma can be managed with a variety of techniques, including conventional bone grafting, distraction osteogenesis, bone graft substitutes, prosthetic devices, and vascularized bone grafting. Although there is an array of available methods for long-bone reconstruction of bony defects, vascularized bone transfer is particularly useful in large defects (> 6 cm) and in cases in which osteomyelitis and unstable soft-tissue or beds make conventional techniques difficult.

Effect of radioactive iodine-induced hypothyroidism on longitudinal bone growth during puberty in immature female rats.

Thyroid cancer in children, the most common endocrine malignancy, shows aggressive behavior and has a high recurrence rate after surgical ablation. Radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment is the most effective primary modality for medical ablation of juvenile thyroid cancer, and leads to intentional hypothyroidism. Although several negative impacts of hypothyroidism have been reported in children in response to other antithyroid agents, the combined effects of RAI exposure and hypothyroidism, on growing bones specifically, are unknown. In this study, we investigated the effect of RAI-induced hypoth

Hyperostosis and hyperphosphataemia syndrome: a diagnostic dilemma.

The syndrome of hyperostosis and hyperphosphataemia (HHS) is very rare. It can mimic bone infections and tumours. A nine-year-old girl presented with pain in her left lower leg. Radiographs showed patchy sclerosis in the tibial diaphysis. Investigations were normal except for hyperphosphataemia. Open biopsy showed chronic inflammation. Bacterial cultures were negative. Four months later, she had pain in the other leg. On evaluation for hyperphosphataemia, there was increased renal reabsorption of phosphates. She responded to analgesics. In patients between six and 16 years of age, HHS must be

Acquired bone dysplasia secondary to catheter-related complications in the neonate.

Four neonates presented with leg-length discrepancy in the first and second year of life, secondary to physeal growth arrest. All four had stormy postnatal periods, requiring indwelling arterial and/or hyperalimentation catheters. One had documented osteomyelitis. In the last three cases, the growth disturbance may have been secondary to aseptic emboli to the bones from the indwelling catheters. In two cases, there was evidence of other nonseptic embolic phenomena.

Surgical correction of polydactyly in a camel (Camelus dromedarius).

A 2-mo-old, 90-kg, intact male camel (Camelus dromedarius) was admitted for surgical removal of a supernumerary digit associated with the medial aspect of the right carpus and metacarpus. Radiographic views of the carpus and metacarpus revealed the supernumerary digit articulating with the middle carpal joint via an extra carpal bone. The supernumerary digit consisted of three bones. Surgical removal of the supernumerary digit was recommended to restore normal limb conformation, limit the possibility of future lameness, and improve the cosmetic appearance of the limb. Complete surgical removal

Premature physeal closure after tibial diaphyseal fractures in adolescents.

Seven cases of premature physeal closure secondary to diaphyseal fractures of the tibia in adolescents between 12 and 15 years of age are presented. At the time of the accidents, there was no evidence of physeal lesion in any of the patients. After 4 to 13 months of follow-up (mean, 9 months), early closure was observed in the radiologic controls of one or more physes of the affected leg: distal femoral and proximal and distal tibial in three cases, isolated distal femoral physis in three cases, and both tibial physes without femoral damage in one case. Physeal closure was always central, and

Ipsilateral floating hip and knee, or floating lower limb - A rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Ipsilateral floating hip and knee injuries at the same time are very rare injuries, occurring due to high velocity trauma. With a small number of such case reports, the treatment guidelines regarding surgical fixation are yet to be formulated. CASE REPORT: We report an interesting case of hip dislocation, comminuted acetabular fracture, intertrochanteric and shaft of femur fracture and both bones leg fracture ipsilaterally. Open reduction of hip, antegrade femoral nailing with recon nail and closed tibial nailing was done in a single setting. Acetabular fracture was treated non-

Pediatric ankle fractures: evaluation and treatment.

Pediatric ankle fractures account for approximately 5% of pediatric fractures and 15% of physeal injuries. The biomechanical differences between mature and immature bones, as well as the differing forces applied to those bones, help explain the differences between adult and pediatric fractures. The potential complications associated with pediatric ankle fractures include those seen with adult fractures (such as posttraumatic arthritis, stiffness, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy) as well as those that result from physeal damage (including leg-length discrepancy, angular deformity, or a combina

High-frequency oscillatory motions enhance the simulated mechanical properties of non-weight bearing trabecular bone.

Extremely low-level oscillatory accelerations, applied without constraint, can increase bone formation. Here, we tested the hypothesis that high-frequency oscillations, applied in the absence of functional weight bearing, can be sensed by trabecular bone to produce a structure that is more efficient in sustaining applied loads. The left leg of anesthetized adult female mice (n=18) was subjected to high-frequency oscillations at 45 Hz, 0.6g for 20 min/day, 5 days/week for 3 weeks, while the contralateral leg served as an internal control. To remove the potential interference of the habitual str

Infectious stunting syndrome associated with disturbances of mineral metabolism and bone development in broiler chickens.

On a broiler farm with a rearing capacity of about 200,000 chickens, a disease characterised by growth retardation, variability in chick size, 'leg weakness', diarrhoea and increased mortality at 3 weeks of age occurred repeatedly, in several successive broiler flocks. Gross and histopathological findings were dominated by widening of the hypertrophic and ossification layers of the physes of long bones as well as by thickening, unevenness and defective calcification of the cartilage trabeculae. In the parathyroid gland, vacuolar degeneration of the cytoplasm of glandular epithelial cells, conn

Prediction of the future leg length after rotationplasty in a 3-year-old boy with extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma and long follow-up until skeletal maturity: a case report.

Rotationplasty is a useful option for limb salvage surgery in pediatric patients with malignant bone and soft tissue tumors. However, bone growth after rotationplasty remains poorly characterized. We present a case of a 3-year-old boy with extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma who underwent multidrug chemotherapy (vincristine, doxorubicin, ifosfamide and etoposide), wide resection and functional reconstruction with rotationplasty. No radiotherapy was administered during the treatment course and the patient has been followed up for 16 years after rotationplasty. Leg length at skeletal maturity was predic

Multiple myeloma in an adolescent.

The radiographic findings of a 15-year-old Brazilian male with diagnosis of multiple myeloma are described. He presented with claudication and recent onset of tender painful swelling of the right mid leg. Radiographs showed wide spread "soap bubble" lesions of the skull, long bones, spine, pelvis, ribs, shoulders, and clavicles. The diagnosis was confirmed by the presence of a plasmacytoma on tissue biopsy (femur), serum IgG gammopathy and Bence-Jones proteinuria.

Case report. Posterior splint for leg fractures in spinal cord injured patients.

Traumatic fracture of the long bones of the lower extremities may frequently occur in spinal cord injured patients. In the past, conservative treatment with pillow or sand bag splinting was advocated by many clinicans. This paper presents two cases in which posterior splinting was used on the affected leg for stabilization of the fracture with good result and well accepted by patients. Also, the use of Mud bed for prevention of pressure sores was illustrated.

Accuracy of 4 Different Methods for Estimation of Remaining Growth and Timing of Epiphysiodesis.

BACKGROUND: The calculation of remaining growth in children and the timing of epiphysiodesis in those with leg-length discrepancy (LLD) is most often done with 4 methods: the Green-Anderson, White-Menelaus, Moseley straight-line graph, and multiplier methods. The aims of this study were to identify the most accurate method with use of bone age or chronological age and to evaluate the influence of including inhibition in the calculations. METHODS: One hundred and ninety-one children (10 to 17 years of age) with LLD who underwent surgical closure of the growth plate and were followed until skel

Effects of high intensity step-up and low intensity step-down lighting programs on the incidence of leg abnormalities in turkeys.

Two trials were conducted to determine if a high intensity (20 lx) step-up lighting program would decrease the incidence of leg abnormalities in turkeys. The step-up lighting regimen was compared to a low intensity (2.5 lx) step-down lighting program. Toms were used in Trial 1 and both sexes were employed in Trial 2. Body weight, feed/gain ratio, and mortality of toms of Trial 1 did not differ significantly between lighting regimens. The incidence of leg deformities and the length of the tarsometatarsal bone were significantly decreased, whereas plasma androgen and testes weights were increase
