Background. We report results of the application of the Ilizarov method in the treatment of patients with shortening and deformity of the distal epiphysis of the lemur caused by neonatal osteomyelitis.<br /> Material and methods. 28 patients were operated, ranging in age from 6-19 years (average 10). There were 15 cases of hypoplasia of the lateral condyle with 10-500 valgus deformity of the knee joint, and 11 cases of malformation of the medial condyles with 5-300 varus deformity. In 2 cases there was malformation of both condyles of the femur (2-18 cm, mean 7,5 cm) was observed in all cases.

Here, we describe the postnatal development of retinal projections in galagos. Galagos are of special interest as they represent the understudied strepsirrhine branch (galagos, pottos, lorises, and lemurs) of the primate radiations. The projections of both eyes were revealed in each galago by injecting red or green cholera toxin subunit B (CTB) tracers into different eyes of galagos ranging from postnatal day 5 to adult. In the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, the magnocellular, parvocellular, and koniocellular layers were clearly labeled and identified by having inputs from the ipsilateral

Microscopic tooth-wear (microwear) patterns can be an important tool for assessing modes and rates of abrasive tooth wear, but their analysis and interpretation is complicated by the fact that microwear is influenced by many factors. Three of these factors were here tested under conditions of compressive loading: (1) species differences in enamel structure, (2) abrasive particle size and (3) magnitude of force. Teeth of four species (Homo sapiens, Lemur fulvus, Ovis aries and Crocodylus rhombifer) were abraded in vitro using three sizes of abrasive silicon-carbide grit (average diameters 73, 2

The 320-kb human pseudoautosomal region 2 (PAR2) at the tips of the long arms of the X and Y chromosomes is thought to have been duplicated onto the Y chromosome recently in primate evolution. The four genes within PAR2 have been proposed to constitute two zones with different base ratios and transcription, one of which was added recently to the X chromosome. To test this hypothesis, we cloned and mapped PAR2 genes in other species, the lemur, the cat, and a marsupial, the tammar wallaby. None of the human PAR2 genes colocalized with human PAR1 genes in the marsupial genome, confirming that th

Dental calculus and associated periodontal disease are serious clinical problems in captive squirrel monkeys. Calculus begins to appear as early as 2 years of age, with subsequent development of periodontal disease, dental abscessation, tooth loss and other sequelae. When used as a feed additive, sodium hexametaphosphate (HMP) retards the growth of calculus on previously cleaned teeth in rhesus monkeys, lemurs, and other species. We wanted to determine whether HMP would reduce dental calculus in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.) whose teeth had not been pre-cleaned. The study animals were divide

The quadrupedal walking gait displayed by most primates differs from that of other mammals in several characteristics. To understand the functional implications of these characteristics, it is useful to explore known exceptions to these generalizations and to determine how widespread any such characteristic actually is. Lorises are one such exception in not exhibiting the typical primate pattern of higher peak vertical forces on their hind limbs than forelimbs. A distinctive pattern of scapulohumeral muscle recruitment is an example of a primate characteristic based only on anthropoids. This s

Metabolites, including amino acids, nucleobases, and vitamins, have emerged as promising candidates for sustainable functional materials due to their inherent biocompatibility and low fabrication costs. Notable examples include glycine-based nanogenerators, indigo-based organic transistors, and caffeine-based optical waveguides. Riboflavin (vitamin B2), forms optically active supramolecular structures in the tapetum lucidum of lemurs and cats; however, its detailed packing and functional role remain unknown. Here, aiming to explore the bio-inspired self-assembly of riboflavin to uncover potent

In accordance with human life, agriculture has main role in it, and in addition to that most people are involved in some kind of agricultural activity either in a direct or indirect manner. Moreover, the agricultural sectors acquired a major role in supplying better quality food and thus made the greatest attribution to the growth of populations and economics. But, the disease over the crop has influenced the growth of the corresponding species and thus requires an earlier diagnosis of plant disease by utilizing the most adequate and automatic detection approach for improving the quality of th

Sperm cryopreservation and biobanking are emerging as tools for supporting genetic management of small and threatened populations in amphibian conservation programs. However, there is little to no evidence demonstrating reproductive maturity and viability of offspring generated with cryopreserved sperm, potentially limiting widespread integration of these technologies. The purpose of this report is to demonstrate that amphibian sperm can be cryopreserved and thawed to successfully produce individuals of an F1 generation that can reach adulthood and reproductive maturity, to generating viable g

Toxoplasmosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii affects both conservation and public health efforts. In the Taipei Zoo, toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in ring-tailed lemurs and a meerkat in 2019 while a freeze-thaw meat strategy had been applied to carnivores before the event. To investigate the possible risk factors associated with T. gondii infection in the Taipei Zoo, 179 veterinary visiting mammals from 2019-2021 and six stray cats were included to detect anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM in their serum via ELISA, and T. gondii in their faeces and blood via PCR. Although the overall T. gondii IgG seroprev

BACKGROUND: Molecular sex determination is a valuable tool for an effective population management in captive bred endangered species. The molecular approaches are particularly valuable in species with limited sexual dimorphism. Moreover, the utilization of accessible non-invasive samples from newborn animals enables early sex determination beneficial for the animal population management and planning.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A rapid molecular sex determination method using PCR with specific primers targeting the male-specific SRY locus and the control c-myc gene present in both sexes was develope

Monoxenous parasites may easily infect animals in captivity, and nematodes belonging to the genus Trichuris are commonly reported in zoological gardens worldwide. Infections in captive animals should be accurately monitored and the characterization of pathogens is highly advisable, as a tool to infer possible routes of intra- and interspecific transmission pathways and to assess the related zoonotic potential. Whipworms are usually identified on the basis of few morphological features of adults males and eggs and by an host-affiliation criterion. Given the strong morphological convergence of a

Lemur tyrosine kinase 3 (LMTK3) is an oncogenic kinase that is involved in different types of cancer (breast, lung, gastric, colorectal) and biological processes including proliferation, invasion, migration, chromatin remodeling as well as innate and acquired endocrine resistance. However, the role of LMTK3 in response to cytotoxic chemotherapy has not been investigated thus far. Using both 2D and 3D tissue culture models, we found that overexpression of LMTK3 decreased the sensitivity of breast cancer cell lines to cytotoxic (doxorubicin) treatment. In a mouse model we showed that ectopic ove

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis plays a principal role in stress response regulation and has been implicated in the etiology of stress-related disorders. The HPA axis regulates the normal synthesis and release of glucocorticoids; dysregulation of the HPA axis causes abnormal responses to stress. FK506-binding protein 5 (FKBP5), a co-chaperone of heat shock protein 90 in the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) molecular complex, is a key GR sensitivity regulator. FKBP5 single nucleotide polymorphisms are associated with dysregulated HPA axis and increased risk of stress-related disorders

Female sifaka mate selectively with one or more resident and/or non-resident males during the breeding season. Various adaptive explanations have been advanced to explain why female primates mate with multiple males including that 1) females seek to confuse paternity and thereby forestall male infanticide and/or ensure male infant care or 2) females seek to ensure fertilization. Assessing the power of fertilization insurance to explain mating patterns in females requires information on the temporal relationship between mating and ovarian hormones. The hormonal correlates of reproduction and ma

Age-related neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), are characterized by the accumulation of pathological Tau protein (tauopathy), which drives neurotoxicity and cognitive decline. Although SUMOylation significantly influences tauopathy, the underlying mechanisms remain largely elusive. Here, utilizing a bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) assay to monitor Tau-Tau aggregation and screen for SUMO E3 ligases, we identified PIAS1 as a critical driver of Tau pathology. Genetic analysis of the UK Biobank cohort revealed that single nucleotide polymorphisms in the

Dental caries is one of the most common diseases afflicting modern humans and occurs in both living and extinct non-human primates, as well as other mammalian species. Compared to other primates, less is known about the etiology or frequency of caries among the Strepsirrhini. Given the link between caries and diet, caries frequency may be informative about the dietary ecology of a given animal. Understanding rates of caries in wild populations is also critical to assessing dental health in captive populations. Here, we examine caries frequency in a sample of 36 extant strepsirrhine species (n

The nasal cavity of strepsirrhine primates (lemurs and lorises) has the most primitive arrangement of extant primates. In nocturnal species, the numerous turbinals of the ethmoid bear a large surface area of olfactory mucosa (OM). In this study, we examine turbinal development in four genera of diurnal or cathemeral lemuriformes. In addition, we examined an age series of each genus to detect whether structures bearing OM as opposed to respiratory mucosa (RM) develop differently, as has been observed in nocturnal strepsirrhines. In adults, the maxilloturbinal is covered by highly vascular respi

Darwin was struck by the many similarities between humans and other primates and believed that these similarities were the product of common ancestry. He would be even more impressed by the similarities if he had known what we have learned about primates over the last 50 years. Genetic kinship has emerged as the primary organizing force in the evolution of primate social organization and the patterning of social behaviour in non-human primate groups. There are pronounced nepotistic biases across the primate order, from tiny grey mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus) that forage alone at night but

West Nile virus (WNV), an arthropod-borne virus belonging to the family Flaviviridae, had been recognized in Africa, Asia and the south of Europe for many decades. Only recently, it has been associated with an increasing number of outbreaks of encephalitis in humans and equines as well as an increasing number of infections in vertebrates of a wide variety of species. In this article, the data available on the incidence of WNV in vertebrates are reviewed. Moreover, the role of vertebrates in the transmission of WNV, the control of WNV infections in veterinary medicine as well as future perspect
