[Morphometric OCT parameters of the lens under accommodative stimulus. Report 1. Assessment of age-related changes].

INTRODUCTION: The structural approach to studying the mechanism of accommodation and its age-related changes focuses on analyzing morphometric parameters (size, shape, and position) of the crystalline lens as the key element responsible for changes in clinical refraction during accommodation. The latest-generation swept-source (SS) anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) device CASIA2 (Tomey, Japan) enables near-screening evaluation of lens shape and position both at baseline and under accommodative stimulus. In the latter case, the integrated optical system provides lens-induce

[Pseudoexfoliation syndrom].

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is systematic microfibrylopathy associated with abnormalities of the accumulation of the extracellular matrix - buildup of protein clumps of abnormal basal membrane of trabecular epithelium, iris, ciliary body and lens capsule. The exfoliation material accumulates in anterior segment of a human eye (anterior lens capsule, ciliary zonule, ciliary body, iris, trabecular, anterior hyaloid membrane, conjunctiva) and other organs such as heart, connective tissue of lungs, vessels, skin, gallbladder, kidneys, liver, urinary bladder and meninges. People with PEX are m

Suramin keratopathy.

Vortex keratopathy occurred in six patients given high-dose intravenous suramin for adrenocortical carcinoma. The corneal findings were bilateral and symmetric. Two patients complained of foreign-body sensation. One patient developed opacities of the anterior lens epithelium. Histopathologic studies of the eyes in one patient showed intraepithelial apical deposits in the cornea, conjunctiva, and lens epithelia. By electron microscopy, these deposits were found to be membranous lamellar inclusion bodies. These findings, as demonstrated by osmium-PAS staining and electron microscopy, were simila

Lenalidomide attenuates cardiac fibrosis and inflammation induced by β-adrenergic receptor activation.

β-Adrenergic receptor (β-AR) excessive activation assumes a vital role in various cardiovascular diseases and mediates cardiac fibrosis and cardiac inflammation. Lenalidomide (Len) has shown anti-fibrosis effects in diverse fibrotic diseases. However, it is unclear whether and how Len suppresses cardiac fibrosis and cardiac inflammation triggered by β-AR overactivation. In our research, mice were treated in the presence of or in the absence of the β-AR agonist isoproterenol (ISO) and with or without Len pretreatment. Interestingly, the results showed that Len alleviated β-AR-induced cardiac dy

Isomerization of aspartyl residues in crystallins and its influence upon cataract.

BACKGROUND: Age-related cataracts, which probably form due to insolubilization of lens proteins, can lead to loss of vision. Although the exact reason is unknown, lens protein aggregation may be triggered by increases in PTMs such as D-β-, L-β- and D-α-Asp isomers. These isomers have been observed in aged lens; however, there have been few quantitative and site-specific studies owing to the lack of a quick and precise method for distinguishing between D- and L-Asp in a peptide or protein. SCOPE OF REVIEW: We describe a new method for detecting peptides containing Asp isomers at individual sit

Stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles enriched with miR-22-3p for cataract treatment - Molecular mechanisms and therapeutic potential: A review.

Cataracts, characterized by progressive lens opacification, affect a significant number of individuals globally, particularly the elderly and those with systemic diseases. Research on the pathogenesis of visual impairments has identified alterations in crystalline proteins, primarily driven by inflammation, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and fibrosis in lens epithelial cells, as the primary mechanisms contributing to cataract development. Current treatment options, including surgical lens implantation and stem cell therapy, have notable limitations, highlighting the need for alternative non-inva

Oral consumption of α-glucosyl-hesperidin could prevent lens hardening, which causes presbyopia.

Presbyopia is one of the most well-known diseases of the eye, predominantly affecting the adult population after 50 years'. Due to hardening of the lens and failure of accommodative change, patients lose the ability to focus on near objects. This eye symptom is reported to be an early symptom of age-related nuclear cataract, and we have previously reported that hesperetin treatment could delay the onset of nuclear cataractogenesis induced by sodium selenite. In this study, we examined whether oral intake of α-glucosyl-hesperidin (G-Hsd), which has greater water solubility than hesperetin, coul

Allergic manifestations of contact lens wearing.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Contact lens-induced papillary conjunctivitis (CLPC) is a common ocular allergic disease in contact lens wearers. In its more severe form, it can cause giant papillary conjunctivitis, resulting in contact lens intolerance and the need to discontinue the use of contact lenses. This review presents the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and management guidelines of this common disorder. RECENT FINDINGS: Different types of contact lenses are associated with differences in the severity of CLPC. Refitting patients with silicone hydrogel contact lenses or with daily disposable

Phacoanaphylactic endophthalmitis secondary to capsular block syndrome.

A 65-year-old white man presented with sudden onset of painless decrease in vision and a red eye 5 days after cataract surgery. The visual acuity was 20/400 with mild injection. Marked iritis was present, and a hypopyon could be seen behind the intraocular lens (IOL) in the capsular bag. The posterior segment was clear. The iritis worsened despite 4 days of hourly topical corticosteroid treatment. Anterior chamber washout was performed, with clearing of the material behind the IOL. The iritis subsided 4 weeks later, and visual acuity recovered to 20/20. Capsular block syndrome can present as p

Conjunctival bandage.

In those instances of corneal disease where a traditional hydrophilic bandage lens cannot be fitted, using the combination of a hydrophilic bandage lens and an overlying conjunctival flap is a relatively simple surgical procedure. It has the advantage of easy removability of the bandage lens while eliminating the possibility of accidental dislodgment of the bandage lens.

The use of soft bandage lenses in corneal disease.

Forty-one patients were treated with soft bandage lenses for various types of corneal pathology. These patients have been monitored over a two-year period. Comfort was consistently achieved with cases of bullous and exposure keratopathies. It was found that the Warner-Lambert Softcon lens gave better protection in patients with VII nerve palsies than the Bausch & Lomb SOFLENS contact lens. However, little difference was noted between the two types of lenses when treating other corneal diseases. It was also found that topical medications, with the exception of steroids, caused no complications.

HIV type 1 Nef perturbs eye lens development in transgenic mice.

HIV transgenic mice often display lens cataracts as a consequence of viral-specific expression of HIV gene products in the developing lens. Cataractous mouse lines encoding either HIV-1 proviral DNA, HIV delta Gag/Pol] proviral DNA, or the HIV-1 nef gene alone were examined to ascertain the effect of Nef on murine lens development. Ocular disease was characterized by a progressive architectural disorganization within the lens fiber cell compartment developing in 100% of HIV-positive mice in five reported transgenic lines. Late embryonic stage transgenic lenses featured a mild microphthalmia, p
