Abstract The term Lewis acid catalysts generally refers to metal salts like aluminium chloride, titanium chloride and zinc chloride. Their application in asymmetric catalysis can be achieved by the addition of enantiopure ligands to these salts. However, not only metal centers can function as Lewis acids. Compounds containing carbenium, silyl or phosphonium cations display Lewis acid catalytic activity. In addition, hypervalent compounds based on phosphorus and silicon, inherit Lewis acidity. Furthermore, ionic liquids, organic salts with a melting point below 100 degrees C, have revealed the

The deprotonative metalation of organic molecules has become a convenient route to prepare functionalised aromatic substrates. Amongst the different metallating reagents available, sodium bases have recently emerged as a more sustainable and powerful alternative to their lithium analogues. Here we report the study of the sterically demanding electrophilic trap B(CH2SiMe3)3 for the deprotonative borylation of arenes using NaTMP (TMP = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide) in combination with tridentate Lewis donor PMDETA (PMDETA = N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine). Using anisole and benzen

Acid-base characteristics (acidity, pKa, and hydricity, ΔG°H- or kH-) of metal hydride complexes could be a helpful value for forecasting their activity in various catalytic reactions. Polarity of the M-H bond may change radically at the stage of formation of a non-covalent adduct with an acidic/basic partner. This stage is responsible for subsequent hydrogen ion (hydride or proton) transfer. Here, the reaction of tricarbonyl manganese hydrides mer,trans-[L2Mn(CO)3H] (1; L = P(OPh)3, 2; L = PPh3) and fac-[(L-L')Mn(CO)3H] (3, L-L' = Ph2PCH2PPh2 (dppm); 4, L-L' = Ph2PCH2-NHC) with organic bases

Halogen bonds (XBs) are non-covalent interactions in which halogens (X), acting as electrophiles, interact with Lewis bases. XBs are able to mediate protein-ligand recognition and therefore play an important role in rational drug design. In this context, the development of molecular modeling tools that can tackle XBs is paramount. XBs are predominantly explained by the existence of a positive region on the electrostatic potential of X named the σ-hole. Typically, with molecular mechanics force fields, this region is modeled using a charged extra point (EP) linked to X along the R-X covalent bo

Noroviruses, an important cause of acute gastroenteritis, have been found to recognize human histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) as receptors. Four strain-specific binding patterns to HBGAs have been described in our previous report. In this study, we have extended the binding patterns to seven based on 14 noroviruses examined. The oligosaccharide-based assays revealed additional epitopes that were not detected by the saliva-based assays. The seven patterns have been classified into two groups according to their interactions with three major epitopes (A/B, H, and Lewis) of human HBGAs: the A/B-

This article highlights novel prospects for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in heterogeneous catalysis as having frustrated Lewis acid-base pairs (FLPs) or as bifunctional acid-base solid catalysts able to activate molecular hydrogen. Starting from the extensive application MOFs as Lewis acid and Lewis base catalysts, this article uses catalytic hydrogenation to briefly summarize the efforts made to heterogenize boron and amine in MOFs to mimic molecular FLP systems. The core of this concept is based on recent findings which demonstrate the ability of two commonly used MOFs, namely UiO-66 and

The concepts of nucleophilicity and protophilicity are fundamental and ubiquitous in chemistry. A case in point is bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN 2) and base-induced elimination (E2). A Lewis base acting as a strong nucleophile is needed for SN 2 reactions, whereas a Lewis base acting as a strong protophile (i.e., base) is required for E2 reactions. A complicating factor is, however, the fact that a good nucleophile is often a strong protophile. Nevertheless, a sound, physical model that explains, in a transparent manner, when an electron-rich Lewis base acts as a protophile or a nu

Dementia with Lewy bodies appears to be the second most common form of dementia, accounting for about one in five cases. The condition is characterized by dementia accompanied by delirium, visual hallucinations, and parkinsonism. Other common symptoms include syncope, falls, sleep disorders, and depression. The presence of both Lewy bodies and amyloidplaques with deficiencies in both acetylcholine and dopamine neurotransmitters suggests that dementia with Lewy bodies represents the middle of a disease spectrum ranging from Alzheimer's disease to Parkinson's disease. The diagnosis of dementia w

Despite recent achievements in the field of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) for small molecule activations, the reversible activation and catalytic transformations of N-H-activated ammonia remain a challenge. Here we report on a rare combination of an aluminium Lewis acid and a carbon Lewis base. A so-called hidden FLP consisting of a phosphorus ylide featuring an aluminium fragment in the ortho position of a phenyl ring scaffold is introduced. Although the formation of the Lewis acid/base adduct is observed in the solid state, which at first glance leads to formally quenched FLP reactivity, we

In this work, urushiol-based polybenzoxazine is cured by the Lewis acid (FeCl3, AlCl3, and CuCl2) at low temperature instead of high thermal curing temperature. The effect of the Lewis acid on structures and properties of the polymers is revealed. The relating urushiol-based benzoxazine monomer (BZ) was synthesized by natural urushiol, formaldehyde, and n-octylamine. The monomer was reacted with the Lewis acid with a molar ratio of 6:1 (Nmonomer: NMetal) at 80°C to obtain films that can be cured at room temperature. The chemical structures of benzoxazine monomers were identified by Fourier-tra

The APOE locus is strongly associated with risk for developing Alzheimer's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. In particular, the role of the APOE ε4 allele as a putative driver of α-synuclein pathology is a topic of intense debate. Here, we performed a comprehensive evaluation in 2466 dementia with Lewy bodies cases versus 2928 neurologically healthy, aged controls. Using an APOE-stratified genome-wide association study approach, we found that GBA is associated with risk for dementia with Lewy bodies in patients without APOE ε4 (P = 6.58 × 10-9, OR = 3.41, 95% CI = 2.25-5.17), but not with

In this study, a new supporting polymeric membrane having Lewis acid nature was introduced for immobilizing organic solvent in on-chip electromembrane extraction (on-chip EME). For this aim, a polymeric nanofibrous membrane incorporated by a copper based metal-organic framework (MOF-199), with coordinatively unsaturated metal sites and Lewis acid property, was prepared by electrospinning a mixture of polycaprolactone (PCL) and MOF-199. Based on the field emission scanning electron microscopy images, the obtained polymeric membrane consisted of intertwined nanofibers having empty space between

Binding of a Lewis acid to an emitter molecule is a versatile method to redshift the emission. This approach is underexplored for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. In this study, we report that the addition of a Lewis acid can induce large (>100 nm) bathochromic shifts in the emission in sulfone-based donor-acceptor TADF (DA-TADF) emitters and for the first time in multi-resonant TADF (MR-TADF) emitters, whilst retaining TADF behaviour. This is achieved through the binding of a 9-sulfonium-10-bora-triptycene (BTripS) Lewis acid to the fluorophore carbonyl or sulfone mo

In this contribution is reported the sensitive properties of the Zn(II) Schiff base complex, 1, in dichloromethane with respect a series of primary, secondary, and tertiary aliphatic amines through the study of fluorescence enhancement upon amine coordination to the Lewis acidic Zn(II) metal center with formation of 1:1 adducts. It is found that complex 1 exhibits selectivity and nanomolar sensitivity for primary and alicyclic amines. A distinct selectivity is also observed along the series of secondary or tertiary amines, paralleling the increasing steric hindrance at the nitrogen atom. The b

Identification of adsorption centers with atomic levels of adsorbents is crucial to study the adsorption of formaldehyde (HCHO), especially for an in-depth understanding of the mechanism of HCHO capture. Herein, we investigate the HCHO adsorption performance of one-dimensional (1D) nanoporous boron nitride (BN) fiber, and explore the adsorption mechanism by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, including adsorption energy change and Bader charge change, and experimental study as well. Research shows that the 1D nanoporous BN fiber possesses a high concentration of Lewis pairs, which ac

Synthesis and crystal structures of three porphyrin-based polyfunctional Lewis acids 1-3 are reported. Intermolecular HgCl⋅⋅⋅HgCl (linear and μ-type) interactions in the solid state of the peripherally ArHgCl-decorated compound 3 lead to a fascinating 3D supramolecular architecture. Compound 3 shows a selective fluorescence quenching response to picric acid and discriminates other nitroaromatic-based explosives. For the first time, an electron-deficient polyfunctional Lewis acid is shown to be useful for the selective detection and discrimination of nitroaromatic explosives. The Stern-Volmer q

Three new alkali metal pyrazolate salts, namely, poly[[μ-3,3'-di-nitro-4,4'-bipyrazole-1,1'-diido]dipotassium], [K2(C6H2N6O4)] n , (1), its rubidium analogue [Rb2(C6H2N6O4)] n , (2), and poly[[[μ-3,3'-di-nitro-4,4'-bipyrazole-1,1'-diido]dicaesium] monohydrate], {[Cs2(C6H2N6O4)]·H2O} n , (3), suggest that the electron-depleted nitro-pyrazolates may be still functional as efficient π-donors toward late alkali metal ions. The three-dimensional structures of 1 and 2 are very similar, being governed by μ4-κ1:κ1:κ1:κ1 coordination of the pyrazolate anions as hard Lewis bases [K-N = 2.783 (3)-2.956 (

Autocatalytic mechanisms in carbon metabolism, such as the Calvin cycle, are responsible for the biological assimilation of CO2 to form organic compounds with complex structures, including sugars. Compounds that form C-C bonds with CO2 are regenerated in these autocatalytic reaction cycles, and the products are concurrently released. The formose reaction in basic aqueous solution has attracted attention as a nonbiological reaction involving an autocatalytic reaction cycle that non-enzymatically synthesizes sugars from the C1 compound formaldehyde. However, formaldehyde and sugars, which are th
