Life style-related diseases of the digestive system: cell culture system for the screening of anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) reagents: suppression of HCV replication by statins and synergistic action with interferon.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection causes chronic hepatitis and leads to liver fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Pegylated-interferon and ribavirin is the current standard therapy for chronic hepatitis C. However, the therapy is only effective in 50% of the patients. To overcome this problem, we recently developed the HCV cell culture system (OR6 system) for the screening of anti-HCV reagents. In this OR6 system, the luciferase gene was introduced into the upstream portion of the HCV genome to facilitate the monitoring of HCV RNA replication. Recently lipid metabolism is reported to be inv

[Lifestyle interventions for patients with personality disorder].

It has been known for some time that patients with severe mental disorders often suffer from somatic comorbidity and that they have a shorter life expectancy. However, also patients with personality pathology often suffer from a poorer somatic health associated with a shorter life expectancy. In daily practice a poor somatic condition in these patients seems often due to a maladaptive life style. Moreover, clinical evidence suggests that a maladaptive life style hinders a good outcome of the (psychotherapeutic) treatment. In this article I present a brief review of the literature, describe thr

Attachment, emotion regulation and quality of life in women with a diagnosis of endometriosis: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Endometriosis, a prevalent gynecological condition, significantly impacts physical, psychological, and social well-being. This study explores the relationship between attachment styles, emotion regulation difficulties, and quality of life in women with endometriosis. Drawing on attachment theory, the study hypothesized that secure attachment would correlate with fewer emotion regulation difficulties and higher quality of life, while insecure attachment styles would correlate with greater difficulties and lower quality of life. METHODS: The study included 354 Italian women diagnosed w

Cognitive style and depression: symptom-related, event-related or independent provoking factor?

Three models of the relation of negative cognitive style to depression are outlined: (1) a symptom model, where negative cognitions are a symptom of depression, (2) a vulnerability model, where a negative life-event in combination with cognitive vulnerability leads to depression and (3) an alternative aetiologies model, where depression can be precipitated either by stressful life-events or by a negative cognitive style. Differential predictions from the three models were examined in data from a general population survey of 193 mothers where a reliable case identification procedure and life-ev

Positive and negative life experiences and changes in internal working models of attachment - a comparative study.

OBJECTIVES: One of the most important questions in personality psychology and psychopathology is whether working models of attachment change during lifetime. It is assumed that early childhood experiences influence the formation of secure or insecure internal working models of attachment The belief that attachment representations formed in childhood are relatively stable is no longer so obvious: new reports have appeared, according to which important life experiences may lead to a change in attachment style from insecure to secure or the other way around. The main aim of the present project wa

[Sister chromatid exchanges and chromosome aberrations as parameters for human risk of cancer development].

Chromosome alterations, which are directly visible changes in the DNA, have close associations to cancer development, non-specific ageing, and heritable genetic status. Human lymphocyte cultures can be used for cytogenetic monitoring of genetic health because many cancers and genetic effects are caused by long-term unhealthy life-styles. We have investigated the sensitivities of lymphocytes from inherited-cancer-prone diseases to the induction of the chromosome alterations by mutagens and carcinogens, and the correlations between the frequency of sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) in peripheral

Relationship between ruminative style and adolescent depression.

BACKGROUND: The role of rumination in depression remains controversial. We aimed to establish the ruminative tendency style theory (RTST), discuss the occurrence of depression in adolescents with rumination as the core, and explore the different associations between adolescent ruminative tendency, ruminative style, and depression. METHODS: This study employed an online questionnaire survey of 1110 Chinese adolescents aged 12-17 years, assessing ruminative tendency, ruminative style, stressful life events, depressive state, depressive trait, the Big Five personality traits, and social support.

[Genetic factors of osteoporosis and fracture and the application of genetic information to the preventive medicine].

Osteoporosis is a common disease caused by multi-factors including genetic factor and environmental and life-style factors. The tailor-made prevention and medicine based on the individual data including genetic information for osteoporosis is expected in the post-genomic era. Genetic susceptibility of osteoporosis has been analyzed by linkage and association study. A number of studies have been shown the association between bone mass and polymorphisms in candidate gene, however, these results have been poor reproducible. Some studies have been reported the interaction between genetic factor an

Quality of life in adult recipients of bone marrow transplantation.

Quality of life, coping styles, and satisfaction with health care were assessed in 32 bone marrow transplant recipients and 22 conventional chemotherapy recipients. Subjects reported having generally good quality of life with no significant differences in quality of life or coping styles between the two groups. Quality of life was not significantly associated with age, socioeconomic status, time since diagnosis, or time since last treatment, although lower scores were associated with a passive coping style. Interestingly, bone marrow transplant recipients reported greater over-all satisfaction

Cognitive vulnerabilities, negative life events, and depressive symptoms in young adolescents.

Negative patterns of thinking, termed cognitive vulnerabilities, have been identified as risk factors for the development of depressive symptoms when adolescents experience negative life events. This study evaluated the associations among three cognitive vulnerabilities (i.e., dysfunctional attitudes, negative inferential style, and ruminative response style) and negative life events with depressive symptoms in a sample of young adolescents. All three cognitive vulnerabilities were found to be significantly associated with depressive symptoms. Furthermore, ruminative response style was found t

Self-elimination of risk factors for recurrent vaginal candidosis.

Women suffering from recurrent vulvo-vaginal candidosis (RVC) often follow medical and non-medical advices to diminish the severity and frequency of the recurrences, but the impact of such interventions is unclear. The aim of this study was to identify differences in life style habits of women with RVC compared with normal women and to define which changes have influenced the frequency of recurrences in these women. Fifty-one women with RVC and 51 age-matched control women without a history of RVC were sent a questionnaire. History of allergic disease (OR 2.8) and use of corticoids (OR 5) were
