The Royal Society report 'Geoengineering the Climate' identified solar radiation management using albedo-enhancing aerosols injected into the stratosphere as the most affordable and effective option for geoengineering, but did not consider in any detail the options for delivery. This paper provides outline engineering analyses of the options, both for batch-delivery processes, following up on previous work for artillery shells, missiles, aircraft and free-flying balloons, as well as a more lengthy analysis of continuous-delivery systems that require a pipe connected to the ground and supported

We report our experience with sternum lifting method in 5 patients with a retrosternal large parathyroid gland around an innominate vein. There were 2 men and 3 women aged 35 to 81 years. All patients showed a retrosternal large parathyroid gland around an innominate vein. Under general anesthesia, the patient is placed in a supine position with the neck extended. About 3 to 4 cm cervical incision is made above the sternal notch. Two hooks are placed at both sternoclavicular junctions. After the sternum is retracted upward, the anterior mediastinum can now be well visualized with the surgeon a

In this article, we describe a new technique for performing a laparoscopic-assisted hepatectomy, using a self-designed abdominal wall-lifting systems. We used this system for 5 patients; 2 were left lateral segmentectomy, 1 was S6 segmentectomy, and 1 was S8 wedge resection, and the other was an extended left hepatectomy. This procedure can minimize the length of the wound, while avoiding the lethal complications associated with the pneumoperitonium. This device and technique can also provide a bridge for young or less-experienced surgeons to be familiar with advanced laparoscopic surgery from

Lifting in most industrial environments is performed on a smooth, level ground surface. There are, however, many outdoor work environments (e.g. agriculture and construction) that require manual material handling activities on variable grade ground surfaces. Quantifying the biomechanical response while lifting under these conditions may provide insight into the aetiology of lifting-related injury. The aim of the current study was to quantify the effect of laterally slanted ground surfaces on the biomechanical response. Ten subjects performed both isometric weight-holding tasks and dynamic lift

STUDY DESIGN: A fully randomized experiment was conducted in a laboratory with a breath-by-breath monitor to control accurately the two factors of breathing maneuvers: breathholding duration and air volume within the thoracic cavity.
OBJECTIVES: To resolve the controversy in previous reports about the effect of breathholding on the trunk electromyogram, and to verify the hypothesis that not only the factor of glottis closure, but also that of the air volume inside the thoracic cavity affects the trunk muscular activities during lifting.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Breathing was shown to affe

OBJECTIVE: The use of endoscopic surgical procedures has rapidly spread to abdominal and thoracic surgeries and subsequently to surgeries of the neck region. Several surgeons initiated endoscopic parathyroidectomy using CO2 insufflation to create the working space; however, they reported various complications. We describe here a skin-lifting method that may have few complications.
METHODS: A 65-year-old man was diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism due to a solitary adenoma of the left inferior parathyroid gland. A 3-cm oblique incision was made below the left clavicle, and a 5-mm incisi

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by gradual progression. A significant pathophysiology of its development and evolution is neuroinflammation. A previous review assessed the neuroinflammation research in PD, but limitations in its search period and analytical methods restricted its ability to reflect the full landscape of the field and recent research trends. To solve this problem, we performed a bibliometric and visual review in order to describe the current state of research and outline the recent progress in PD-related neuroinflammation. The Web

Repetitive lifting tasks, common in labor-intensive industries, are a significant contributor to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) and chronic lower back pain (LBP). The continuous physical strain associated with these tasks leads to the accumulation of fatigue, which can reduce performance and increase the risk of injury over time. This study evaluates the impact of passive back exosuit assistance on muscle activation and fatigue during repetitive lifting tasks. Surface electromyography (sEMG) and biomechanical assessments were conducted to analyze kinematics and key muscle group

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), especially lower back pain, are common consequences of repetitive and long-term mechanical stress. Exoskeletons offer a promising approach to reduce this stress by supporting the wearer during physical labour. This study investigated the effect of an active exoskeleton (Apogee) on muscle activation and joint kinematics during load lifting at different lifting speeds and exoskeleton support levels.
METHODS: Sixteen healthy young adults (8 male, 8 female) lifted a 15 kg box at two lifting speeds (9 and 12 lifting cycles/min) and four support level

The purpose of this study was to compare electromyographic (EMG) with mechanomyographic (MMG) recordings during isometric conditions, and during a simulated load-lifting task. Twenty-two males (age: 25.5 ± 5.3 years) first performed maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and submaximal isometric contractions of upper limb muscles at 25%, 50% and 75% MVC. Participants then executed repetitions of a functional activity simulating a load-lifting task above shoulder level, at 25%, 50% and 75% of their maximum activity (based on MVC). The low-frequency part of the accelerometer signal (<5 Hz) was use

This paper presents a method for determining the number of lifting techniques used by healthy individuals through the analysis of kinematic data collected from 115 participants utilizing an motion capture system. The technique utilizes a combination of feature extraction and Ward's method to analyse the range of motion in the sagittal plane of the knee, hip, and trunk. The findings identified five unique lifting techniques in people without low back pain. The multivariate analysis of variance statistical analysis reveals a significant difference in the range of motion in the trunk, hip and kne

Lifting with a flexed spine, especially near the end range of motion, has been identified as a potential risk factor for low back injury/pain. Therefore, individuals who develop discomfort from repetitive, prolonged and/or loaded flexed or slouched postures may benefit from a greater awareness of how to control and/or modify their spinal posture to avoid irritating their backs in these situations. This study was therefore designed to test the ability of spine-oriented verbal instructions to reduce intersegmental spine flexion during three lifting tasks. The lifts were first performed without a

BACKGROUND: One-handed lifting commonly occurs in the industry. Specific guidelines of proper heights during one-handed lifting could be valuable information to design or to assess the risk of work environment.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the maximum acceptable height and comfortable height during one-handed vertical lifting by gender, participant height, hand, and object weight.
METHODS: Based on the psychophysical method, 72 males and 50 females, divided into four different height groups, determined their maximum acceptable and comfortable heights by each hand (

Anterior chest wall lifting facilitates a wide view and allows easy access during thoracoscopic surgery in a supine position for anterior mediastinal lesions. We previously reported an anterior chest wall lifting method for a thymectomy that utilizes our original costal hooks. Here, we present a less invasive method that can be performed with only a needle puncture, i.e., a metal plate placed under the ribs is lifted with a wire inserted through the anterior chest wall. We have applied this novel 'T-lifting method' for 5 different cases with anterior mediastinal tumors, and found it to be simp

Intra-abdominal hypertension during laparoscopic operations increased the risk of complications from cardiovascular and respiratory systems. An application of laparolifting systems allowed doctors to avoid changes of pneumoperitoneum, although it was associated with technical difficulties in operation performance. The authors used a test in order to determine cardiorespiratory reserve in preoperative period. The reserve was characterized by decrease of stroke volume of the heart against the background of intra-abdominal hypertension. There was noted a reliable increase of complication rate in

We report a 19-year-old man with rupture of the right subclavian artery after an excessive exercise of weight lifting. Imaging showed a hematothorax and hematomediastinum, a pseudoaneurysm with a maximum diameter of 4 cm, and a dissection of the right vertebral artery. As an emergency procedure an interposition graft was performed for reconstruction of the right subclavian artery. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful, and he was symptom free except for regressive hoarseness due to a paresis of the right recurrent laryngeal nerve.
