Differential diagnosis of ruptures of the lateral ligaments of the ankle joint.

Ruptures of the lateral ligaments of the ankle joint occur very frequently in young persons and this subject is therefore one which deserves more attention. Once a fracture or avulsion of a ligamentary insertion has been excluded the nature and extent of the ligamentary lesion should be precisely assessed. The only objective criterion of rupture of a ligament is demonstrable instability of the joint. Since the anterior talo-fibular ligament is always found to be torn immediately following supination-inversion injury to the ligaments the talar drawer sign will be demonstratable both clinically

MR Imaging of Clinically Relevant Anatomy and Pathology of the Wrist Ligaments.

The wrist is a complex of joints stabilized by numerous intrinsic and extrinsic ligaments. Disruption of these ligaments may lead to progressive wrist pain, instability, and joint degeneration. Therefore, early diagnosis of ligamentous derangements is important to optimize functional outcomes. MR imaging is the modality of choice for the imaging evaluation of the wrist ligaments and may assist with clinical and surgical decision-making. The objective of this article is to provide a review of the MR imaging evaluation of clinically relevant wrist ligaments through a discussion of normal anatomy

Regional variations and sex-related differences of stiffness in human tracheal ligaments.

PURPOSE: There have been numerous studies focused on the stiffness of tracheal cartilage. However, no research has been conducted specifically on the annular ligament, nor have any regional differences in the annular ligament been identified. The purpose of this study was to investigate the stiffness of the ligaments present between the thyroid, cricoid and tracheal cartilages. METHODS: The ligaments were identified in the cervical region of living subjects with ultrasonography. The stiffness of the ligaments was measured from the body surface using a digital palpation device (MyotonPRO). Sin

The equine patellar ligaments and the infrapatellar fat pad - a microanatomical study.

BACKGROUND: Interpretation of patellar ligament (PL) ultrasonography may be difficult, as hypoechoic or heterogenous echogenicity are common findings. Verifying suspected disease of equine PLs by histopathology is also problematic as descriptions of normal PL vascularity and histology are scarce. The current study describes the PL and infrapatellar fat pad (IFP) vascular pattern from computed tomography scans of barium perfused normal equine specimens (n = 8; age 10 days to 18 years), as well as routine histology to serve as a reference for future investigations into PL pathology and IFP disea

The Lateral-W Construct: An Anatomical Variant of the Dorsal Wrist Ligaments.

Background  The dorsal intercarpal ligament (DIC) is an elegant dorsal stabilizer of the proximal carpal row, including the scaphoid's proximal pole and scapholunate joint. Along with the dorsal radiocarpal (DRC) ligament, it acts as a dorsal radioscaphoid stabilizer, with dynamism due to its ability to modify its length up to threefold by changing the angles between its V-shaped bundle morphology. The DIC ligament consistently originates from the dorsal tubercle of the triquetrum on the ulnar side. It spans transversely, attaching to the dorsal groove of the scaphoid (97-100%), lunate (75-90%

The surgical strategy for multilevel massive ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligaments.

PURPOSE: Creating enough decompression, favorable outcome, less complication, and maintain adequate lordosis and stability in the patients with cervical myelopathy due to multilevel massive ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) still poses a challenge for surgeons. The aim of our study is to retrospectively evaluate our patients and try to seek a better surgical strategy. METHODS: Between 2015 and 2019, 55 consecutive patients with multilevel massive OPLL underwent surgical treatment. Among these, 40 patients were treated with cervical laminectomy and then anterior decomp

The glenohumeral ligaments: Superior, middle, and inferior: Anatomy, biomechanics, injury, and diagnosis.

The three glenohumeral ligaments (superior, middle, and inferior) are discrete thickenings of the glenohumeral joint capsule and are critical to shoulder stability and function. Injuries to this area are a cause of significant musculoskeletal morbidity. A literature search was performed by a review of PubMed, Google Scholar, and OVID for all relevant articles published up until 2020. This study highlights the anatomy, biomechanical function, and injury patterns of the glenohumeral ligaments, which may be relevant to clinical presentation and diagnosis. A detailed understanding of the normal an

Mechanical and Microstructural Properties of Native Pediatric Posterior Cruciate and Collateral Ligaments.

BACKGROUND: Although anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears have received the most attention, the medial collateral ligament (MCL) is thought to be the most commonly injured knee ligament overall. The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and posterior collateral ligament (PCL) are less frequently compromised but can be involved in severe multiligament injuries. The paucity of information on the native properties of these ligaments in the pediatric population hinders the overall optimization of treatment for these injuries. PURPOSE: To characterize the mechanical and microstructural properties of

Effects of repeated biaxial loads on the creep properties of cardinal ligaments.

The cardinal ligament (CL) is one of the major pelvic ligaments providing structural support to the vagina/cervix/uterus complex. This ligament has been studied mainly with regards to its important function in the treatment of different diseases such as surgical repair for pelvic organ prolapse and radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer. However, the mechanical properties of the CL have not been fully determined, despite the important in vivo supportive role of this ligament within the pelvic floor. To advance our limited knowledge about the elastic and viscoelastic properties of the CL, we

Subtalar instability: imaging features of subtalar ligaments on 3D isotropic ankle MRI.

BACKGROUND: MRI analysis of subtalar ligaments in the tarsal sinus has not been well performed. We retrospectively investigated the appearance of subtalar ligaments using 3D isotropic MRI and compared imaging findings of subtalar ligaments between patients with subtalar instability (STI) and controls. METHODS: Preoperative MRIs of 23 STI patients treated with arthroscopic subtalar reconstruction were compared to MRIs of 23 age- and sex-matched control subjects without STI. Thickness and width of anterior capsular ligament (ACL) and interosseous talocalcaneal ligament (ITCL) as well as thickne

Imaging of Athletic Injuries of Knee Ligaments and Menisci: Sports Imaging Series.

Acute knee injuries are a common source of morbidity in athletes and if overlooked may result in chronic functional impairment. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the knee has become the most commonly performed musculoskeletal MR examination and is an indispensable tool in the appropriate management of the injured athlete. Meniscal and ligamentous tearing are the most frequent indications for surgical intervention in sports injuries and an understanding of the anatomy, biomechanics, mechanisms of injury, and patterns of injury are all critical to accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.

Damage-induced hydrolyses modelling of biodegradable polymers for tendons and ligaments repair.

The use of biodegradable synthetic grafts to repair injured ligaments may overcome the disadvantages of other solutions. Apart from biological compatibility, these devices shall also be functionally compatible and temporarily displayed, during the healing process, adequate mechanical support. Laxity of these devices is an important concern. This can cause failure since it may result in joint instability. Laxity results from a progressive accumulation of plastic strain during the cyclic loading. The functional compatibility of a biodegradable synthetic graft and, therefore, the global mechanica
