Lactobacillus fermentum LF31 Supplementation Reversed Atrophy Fibers in a Model of Myopathy Through the Modulation of IL-6, TNF-α, and Hsp60 Levels Enhancing Muscle Regeneration.

Background/Objectives: Recent studies have highlighted the role of the gut-muscle axis, suggesting that modulation of the gut microbiota may indirectly benefit skeletal muscle. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus fermentum (L. fermentum) supplementation in a model of muscle atrophy induced by chronic ethanol (EtOH) intake, focusing on inflammatory and antioxidant mechanisms. Methods: Sixty 12-month-old female Balb/c mice were divided randomly into three groups (n = 20/group): (1) Ethanol (EtOH) group, receiving ethanol daily for 8 and 12 weeks to induce systemic oxidative

Gut dysbiosis associated with neonatal respiratory distress syndrome and biological plausibility of disease-specific probiotic intervention: a translational study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is among the most prevalent morbidities in late preterm and term infants. Although the gut-lung axis has been implicated in neonatal respiratory disease, the relationship between RDS and early gut microbiome composition remains poorly characterized. This study aimed to characterize gut microbiome alterations associated with RDS and surfactant replacement therapy (SRT), and to evaluate the biological plausibility of a disease-specific probiotic intervention. METHODS: Two complementary cohorts were prospectively enrolled. In the clinical

NOD1 in the modulation of host-microbe interactions and inflammatory bone resorption in the periodontal disease model.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by destruction of non-mineralized and mineralized connective tissues. It is initiated and maintained by a dysbiosis of the bacterial biofilm adjacent to teeth with increased prevalence of Gram-negative microorganisms. Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain containing 1 (NOD1) is a member of the Nod-like receptors (NLRs) family of proteins that participate in the activation of the innate immune system, in response to invading bacteria or to bacterial antigens present in the cytoplasm. The specific activating ligand for NOD1 is a

Ultra-processed food intake is associated with increased gastrointestinal tract symptoms and alterations in gut microbiota in patients with systemic sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Alterations in the gastrointestinal (GI) microbiome (i.e., dysbiosis) are a feature of systemic sclerosis (SSc). Diet is a known modifier of the GI microbiome, and ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption has been associated with adverse changes in GI microbial composition. This study aimed to determine whether UPF consumption affects the GI microbiota and GI symptoms in patients with SSc. METHODS: Adult SSc patients provided stool samples and completed both the Diet History Questionnaire II (DHQ-2) and the UCLA Scleroderma Clinical Trial Consortium Gastrointestinal Tract Instrument

Lactobacillus fermentum and Lactobacillus plantarum increased gut microbiota diversity and functionality, and mitigated Enterobacteriaceae, in a mouse model.

Probiotics should bring 'balance' to the intestinal microbiota by stimulating beneficial bacteria, whilst mitigating adverse ones. Balance can also be interpreted as high alpha-diversity. Contrary, Escherichia coli is often regarded as an adverse component of the resident intestinal microbiota. The aim of the present study was to implement a mouse model for in vivo screening of Lactobacillus-strains for ability to increase gut-microbiota diversity and to mitigate E. coli. Mice were divided into six groups, two dietary control-groups and four groups administered strains of Lactobacillus ferment

Effects of Multi-Strain Probiotics on Immune Responses and Metabolic Balance in Helicobacter pylori-Infected Mice.

Chronic inflammation caused by Helicobacter pylori infection increases the risk of developing gastric cancer. Even though the prevalence of H. pylori infection has been decreased in many regions, the development of antibiotic resistance strains has increased the difficulty of eradicating H. pylori. Therefore, exploring alternative approaches to combat H. pylori infection is required. It is well-known that probiotic therapy can improve H. pylori clearance. In this study, H. pylori-infected mice were treated with Lactobacillus fermentum P2 (P2), L. casei L21 (L21), L. rhamnosus JB3 (JB3), or a m

Purification and partial characterization of novel bacteriocin L23 produced by Lactobacillus fermentum L23.

Lactobacillus fermentum strain L23 produced a small bacteriocin, designated bacteriocin L23, with an estimated molecular mass of < 7000 Da. Isolation, purification, and partial characterization of bacteriocin L23 are described. It displayed a wide inhibitory spectrum including both Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogenic strains and two species of Candida. The antibacterial activity of cell-free culture supernatant fluid was not affected by catalase or urease but was abolished by the proteolytic enzymes trypsin and protease VI. Bacteriocin L23 was heat stable (60 min at 100 degrees C) and s

BLAB2CancerKD: a knowledge graph database focusing on the association between lactic acid bacteria and cancer, but beyond.

In a broad sense, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is a general term for Gram-positive bacteria that can produce lactic acid by utilizing fermentable carbohydrates. It is widely used in essential fields such as industry, agriculture, animal husbandry and medicine. At the same time, LAB are closely related to human health. They can regulate human intestinal flora and improve gastrointestinal function and body immunity. Cancer, a disease in which some cells grow out of control and spread to other body parts, is one of the leading causes of human death worldwide. In recent years, the potential of LAB i

Antibiotic resistance and capacity for biofilm formation of different bacteria isolated from endodontic infections associated with root-filled teeth.

INTRODUCTION: To date, a variety of microbial species have been isolated from endodontic infections. However, endodontic clinical bacterial isolates have not been sufficiently characterized with regard to their capacity for antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation. In this study, antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation of 47 different aerobic and anaerobic bacterial isolates, belonging to 32 different species previously isolated from infected filled root canals, were studied. METHODS: Antibiotic sensitivity to 11 antibiotics including penicillin G, amoxicillin, clindamycin, gentamicin,

Lactobacillus fermentum FTDC 8312 combats hypercholesterolemia via alteration of gut microbiota.

In this study, hypercholesterolemic mice fed with Lactobacillus fermentum FTDC 8312 after a seven-week feeding trial showed a reduction in serum total cholesterol (TC) levels, accompanied by a decrease in serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, an increase in serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, and a decreased ratio of apoB100:apoA1 when compared to those fed with control or a type strain, L. fermentum JCM 1173. These have contributed to a decrease in atherogenic indices (TC/HDL-C) of mice on the FTDC 8312 diet. Serum triglyceride (TG) levels of mice fe
